We present a new dynamic range compression method for the reproduction of high dynamic range digital images on conventional display devices. The proposed technique is computationally efficient and easily adjustable with few parameters. Novel contributions of this work include an edgepreserving smoother for the extraction of the visual adaptation level which avoids the formation of halo artifacts in the resulting image and a technique for contrast mapping which improves the visibility of the image details. The algorithm is finally evaluated by means of an objective measure proving its effectiveness.

T-splines is a recently developed surface modelling technique which is a generalization of B-splines and allows true local refinement. Another well established method supporting local refinement is hierarchical B-splines. This paper presents algorithms for transformation between T-splines and hierarchical (rational) B-splines. With the transformation, a surface expressed in terms of T-splines can be converted into a hierarchical (rational) B-spline representation and vice versa. The correspondence between T-spline representation and hierarchical (rational) B-spline representation is generally not one-to-one. Our conversion algorithms can yield compact representations.

Image inpainting technique has been widely used for reconstructing damaged old photographs and removing unwanted objects from images. In this paper, we present an image inpainting method based on the existing exemplar-based image inpainting idea. Our method improves the robustness and effectiveness by rational confidence computing method, matching strategy and filling scheme. Therefore, our method effectively prevents "growing garbage", which is a common problem in other methods. With our method, we can obtain preferable results to those obtained by other similar methods.

The stereoscopic highlighting technique is a new emerging technique that supports using the depth cue in 3D devices as a highlighting technique for general node-link representations. One of the main abilities of this technique is isolating the specific graph portions to magnify them for a detailed exploration without resorting other highlighting attributes such as color or shape. In this paper, we measure the accuracy of this technique by evaluating the ability of general users in reading the variation of depth values to encode some data aspects. To achieve this goal, we carried out a controlled user-study in which we asked users from different backgrounds to perform a specified set of tasks. The results show that using the depth cue in stereoscopic devices is readable for medium data sizes with at most three or four different layers. This can be useful in classifying the data set into a set of categories according to the depth value of the elemental layer.

Subdivision surfaces were first developed as an approach to generalize the patchwise quadrilateral structure of the splines to an arbitrary topological representation. They calculate a complete surface model of arbitrary topology in a global calculation step. The algorithms are based on a recursive refinement of an input mesh. The output surfaces can either be described by their limit points or as a collection of parametric patches. Sometimes these patches are however very complicated to describe and evaluate. Furthermore, subdivision algorithms tend to oscillate around extraordinary vertices. For these reasons, subdivision surfaces are not yet widely used in mechanical engineering. In this paper, the FIN algorithm which has been designed especially to meet these problems is applied to problems from manufacturing and reverse engineering. It is proven that it has considerable advantages over methods not based on a subdivision approach.

We describe the ways in which an approach to constructive shape modelling based on the Function Representation (FRep) can be used to facilitate creative thinking in artistic and technical education. This approach assumes the use of a simple programming language or interactive software tools for creating a shape model, generating its images and finally fabricating a real object of that model. It can be considered an educational technology suitable not only for children and students but also for researchers, artists, and designers. The corresponding modelling language and software tools are being developed within an international HyperFun Project. We applied the theoretical framework and software tools on different levels of education starting from elementary schools to doctoral thesis research in various areas related to artistic design and animation, computergraphics, programming languages, software development and experimental physics. Several application case studies in various areas of art, design, and technical education from different educational institutions and countries are presented.

In this paper, we survey the recent methods on both geometric modeling and computer simulation of the human heart. We will start with an overview of the primary surface and volumetric models used in the simulation and visualization of the human heart. This will be followed by an introduction of different heart simulation techniques that include the finite element method, mesh- less method, finite volume method, and boundary element method. In order to display images of high dynamic range (HDR), tone reproduction operators are usually applied that reduce the dynamic range to that of the display device. Generally, parameters need to be adjusted for each new image to achieve good results. Consistent tone reproduction across different images is therefore difficult to achieve, which is especially true for global operators and to some lesser extent also for local operators. We propose an efficient global tone reproduction method that achieves robust results across a large variety of HDR images without the need to adjust parameters. Consistency and efficiency make our method highly suitable for automated dynamic range compression, which for instance is necessary when a large number of HDR images need to be converted.

Texture-mapped meshes are widely used in constructing 3D virtual reality environment. In this paper we propose a new algorithm for texture-mapped mesh simplification, which is the key element to accelerate the real-time rendering of 3D scenes. In contrast to previous approaches, the algorithm uses edge contraction that combines texture image frequency information distribution and texture mapping distortion energy when it computes simplification error. Experimental results illustrate that the algorithm can avoid texture triangle inversion effectively in the process of simplification and keep mesh model appearance vision properties well.

This paper introduces a robust solution to the realignment of high-resolution image stacks as required in the study of micro-vasculature in human liver. We discuss the design and implementation of CMA-ES alignment algorithm that provides a better and more generic solution to the realignment problem compared to existing solutions. The result of a random rigid transformation test shows that CMA-ES clearly outperforms several known solutions on both accuracy and robustness. The CMA-ES yields an accuracy of approximately 80% whilst the hierarchical chamfer matching algorithm or the Marquardt-Levenberg matching algorithm have an accuracy yield that is less than 50 %.
