The aim of this work is to assess the performance of a Large Eddy Simulation (LES) in-house code for compressible flows on a 2064 cores Linux computing system at the Inter-University Consortium for the Application of Super-computing for Universities and Research (CASPUR-Rome-Italy). The code is written in Fortran90 using the Message Passing Interface (MPI) parallelization library. A non-dissipative sixth-order finite difference scheme is employed in order to solve the Favre-filtered governing equations, with a low-pass sixth-order spatial filtering scheme to avoid the growth of high-frequency modes, and a fourth order Runge-Kutta scheme to advance the solution in time. The open Navier-Stokes characteristic boundary conditions are implemented to avoid reflection of pressure waves and the Smagorinsky model is used to compute the subgrid scale turbulent viscosity. The compact-Padè tridiagonal system of equations is solved by employing an efficient parallel partition LU algorithm. In order to assess the performance of the parallelized structure of the code, its speed-up has been evaluated versus the linear speed-up. The model has been validated by performing simulations of an n-heptane non-reacting plane jet issuing into air at high pressure and temperature.

Scheduling dependent tasks is one of the most challenging problems in parallel and distributed systems. It is known to be computationally intractable in its general form as well as several restricted cases. An interesting application of scheduling is in the area of energy awareness for mobile battery operated devices where minimizing the energy utilized is the most important scheduling policy consideration. A number of heuristics have been developed for this consideration. In this paper, we study the scheduling problem for a particular battery model. In the proposed work, we show how to enhance a well know approach of accounting for the slack generated at runtime due to the difference between WCET (Worst Case Execution Time) and AET (Actual Execution Time). Our solution exploits the fact that even though some tasks become available based on the actual periodicity of a task they are not executed because the run queue is determined by the schedule generated in the offline phase I of the algorithm using the conservative EDF (Earliest Deadline First) algorithm. We peek at the task run-queue to find such tasks to eliminate wastage of the slack generated. Based on the outcome of the conducted experiments, the proposed algorithm outperformed or matched the performance of the 2-Phase dynamic task scheduling algorithm all the time.

Although originally fostering the principle of free resource sharing, academia has identified the need for charging mechanisms for grid services offered in order to better control resource usage. Within the IT industry on the other hand, numerous initiatives are aiming at creating commercial grid services. Both need payment systems but most of the available solutions are bespoke. We present a certificate based payment solution that requires no modification of existing middleware APIs. This transparency guarantees seamless operation with deployed, non-payment aware grid infrastructures and enables hence the simultaneous and interchangeable use of free and paid for grid services. GridBank, the central component in our prototype implementation, both issues and redeems digitally signed cheques. The only common nominator being certificate based authentication allows GridBank to be integrated not only to grid middleware but also to any software infrastructure leveraging X.509 certificates for authentication. We compare our solution to other existing payment solutions for grids, describe its detailed architecture and conclude by analysing its features, strengths and weaknesses.

Task scheduling is very important for efficient execution of large-scale workflows. Static scheduling schemes achieve high performance when executing workflows in stable environments. However, the scheduling costs are very high for large-scale workflows and they may perform poorly if the system performance is changed dynamically. Dynamic rescheduling schemes support the dynamic performance changes because tasks are rescheduled using algorithms from static scheduling schemes when the performance is changed. Thus, better performance can be achieved in workflow applications, although the scheduling costs will increase if the system performance is frequently changed. Therefore, we propose a dynamic recursive adaptive scheduling scheme (DRAS) which can reduces the computational cost. DRAS uses RAS, which is a static scheme with low cost, as rescheduling algorithm. However, if DRAS uses RAS algorithm with no change, the cost increases since RAS is called many times. Thus, we improved the RAS to eliminate the redundant computation. Furthermore, we modified RAS to improve the makespan when used for the rescheduling since DRAS may perform poorly in that case. The evaluation using an abstract simulation shows the makespan of DRAS decreases by 30%compared with a dynamic rescheduling scheme which uses the conventional RAS algorithm. Moreover, DRAS considerably reduces the scheduling time, achieving approximately 6 times speedup for workflows consisting of 1,000 tasks when the dynamic performance is frequently changed.

This paper deals with a novel communication timing control for wireless networks and radio interference problem. Communication timing control is based on the mutual synchronization of coupled phase oscillatory dynamics with a stochastic adaptation. Through local and fully distributed interactions, the coupled phase dynamics self-organizes collision free communication timing. In a wireless communication, the influence of the interference wave causes unexpected collision. Therefore, we propose a more effective timing control by selecting the interaction nodes according to received signal strength.

This paper research on how to select a subtree with exactly k leaves and a diameter of at most 1, which minimizes the distance from the farthest vertex to the subtree. We call such a subtree (k, l)-center of a tree network. In this paper, an efficient parallel algorithm is proposed for finding a (k, l)-center of a tree network. This algorithm performs on the EREW PRAM in O(log n) time using O(n) work.

The major challenges in designing optical switched interconnection networks include the lack of optical buffering and the crosstalk originated from the optical switching elements. Vertical Stacking Banyan networks and Data Vortex networks provide two different approaches to solve the problem. Both networks utilize several parallel planes in conjunction with traffic scheduling to eliminate the contention and the crosstalk within the routing nodes. While the two share similar compromise between system cost and switch performance, their traffic control mechanism has fundamental difference due to specific configurations of the parallel routing planes. This paper provides a comparison study of two network approaches, focusing on the overall system complexity and the resulting switch performance in throughput and latency.

When several independent organizations, whose missions partially overlap, agree to gather together to collaborate in order to achieve a common goal, the resulting collaboration is often referred to in the literature as virtual organization (VO). In this paper we propose a flexible and non-invasive access control infrastructure for VOs that enables member organizations to gain the advantages of the collaboration while preserving their authonomy. The infrastructure is described from the users' point of view and with reference to the European grid project EGEE [1].

KDDML is a middleware language and system for knowledge discovery. The challenge that motivated the development of a distributed version of the originally "standalone" KDDML (KDD Markup Language) environment was on one side to exploit the parallelism, and on the other side to overcome the problem of data immovability, a quite frequent restriction on real-world data collections that has principally a privacy-preserving purpose. The last question is addressed by moving the code and "mining" the data "on the place", that is by adapting the computation to the availability and localization of the data.

In a Grid environment the main components that manage the job workflow life are the Grid Resource Layer, the Grid Information System and the Grid Information Data Model. Until now, only some of the known computational resources, such as a hardware machines and a batch queueing system, have been take into account as valid Resource Framework Layer instances. However many types of virtual computing machines exist, such as a Java Virtual Machine, a parallel Virtual Machine and a Data Source Engine. The actual representation of a Grid resource in the Grid Information System and Data Model concerns only hardware computing machines. We argue that a Data Source Engine is a valid instance for a Grid computing model. Then we define a new Grid element that enables the access to a Data Source Engine and a Data Source, totally integrated with the Grid Monitoring and Discovery System and Resource Broker.
