Currently there are neither structured nor efficient ways to develop and reuse non-trivial and complex distributed systems despite the fact that there exist numerous sources of software, components and knowledge relating to this field. In this paper we describe how we use a novel all-encompassing development methodology called the Total Components Aspect-Oriented (TCAO) methodology to efficiently and rapidly design and develop reusable distributed systems of any size, functionality and complexity. We further describe our other novel concepts of using Early Aspect-Oriented Components (EAOC) and Early Aspect-Oriented Software (EAOS), collectively known as early systemic-entities, to get an early head-start in the development process starting from the requirements engineering phase itself and spanning throughout all the phases. TCAO also encompasses the activities of deployment, maintenance and refactoring to add any further remoting functionalities if the need arises. We further describe how we use TCAO to identify, isolate and use aspects, which are systemic cross-cutting concerns, to make the analysis, design, modelling and implementations of reusable distributed systems easier to understand, manage and control. With the aid of an exemplar software system, we also describe how a non-trivial reusable distributed system can be efficiently and rapidly developed by using our methodology to facilitate technology transfer and reuse.

Automatic detection and tracking of human hands in video imagery has many applications. While some success has been achieved in human-computer interaction applications, hand tracking would also be extremely useful in security systems, where it could help the system to understand and predict human actions, intentions, and goals. We have designed and implemented a prototype hand tracking system, which is able to track the hands of moving humans in low resolution video sequences. Our system uses grayscale appearance and skin color information to classify image subwindows as either containing or not containing a human hand. The prototype's performance is quite promising, detecting nearly all visible hands in a test sequence with a relatively low error rate. In future work we plan to improve the prototype and explore methods for interpreting human gestures in surveillance video.

Sensor networks are often used to sense the physical world and provide observations for various uses. In hostile environments, it is critical to control the network access to ensure the integrity, availability, and at times confidentiality of the sensor data. This paper develops efficient methods for distributed access control in sensor networks. The paper starts with a baseline approach, which provides a more flexible and efficient way to enforce access control when compared with previous solutions. This paper then extends the baseline approach to enable privilege delegation, which allows a user to delegate its privilege to other users without using a trusted server, and broadcast query, which allows a user to access the network at a large scale efficiently. The privilege delegation and broadcast query are very useful in practice;none of the current solutions can achieve these two properties.

Resource discovery is the key requirements in large heterogeneous Grid environments, and an effective and efficient resource discovery mechanism is crucial. However, the complicated and dynamic characteristics of grid resources make sharing and discovering them a challenge. In this paper, a novel model, in which agent and semantic are integrated, is proposed to discovery grid resource efficiently in P2P Grid environment. Resource discovery consists of two aspects: intra-GridPeer query and inter-GridPeer query. The semantic-based match is also used to increase the match accuracy and offers the intelligent search. The Model can adapt to the complex, heterogeneous and dynamic resources of the P2P Grid, and has a better scalability.

The talk will address some of the key algorithmic and computational challenges associated with the modelling of certain classes of biological networks (e.g. biochemical, signalling). This will involve several research threads that cover a range of theoretical, software and hardware implementation issues. The theoretical modelling developments involve a variety of issues related to the numerical, probabilistic, logical, and symbolic aspects of computation and implementation. A lack of effective tools for modelling and analysing networks has prevented their use in many possible applications. The simulation tools will allow us to develop applications in which millions of randomly generated networks can be simulated and analyzed with great computational efficiency. This efficiency can be obtained by parallelizing the modelling process and address problems that arise from the increasing size of networks and the parallel computing systems that they will require. The problems will include, for example, the unpredictable workload and strong data dependencies characteristic of the modelling of networks;they will require us to investigate a number of related design issues, such as domain decomposition, data access and management, workload balancing, and architecture selection. © 2007 IEEE.

Service Oriented Architectures (SOA) represent a recent proposal to obtain cooperation and interoperability in distributed computing environments. A challenge of SOA is services and resources discovery which can be realized both in centralized and distributed way. The distributed approach involves peer-to-peer (P2P) infrastructures supporting the knowledge distribution among peers. In this paper we propose DNK-WSD, a new network architecture providing an efficient distributed web service and resource discovery mechanism based on the notification pattern. The DNK network is a peer-to-peer architecture built using the distributed Network Knowledge (DNK) heuristic which represents a lightweight approach to model graphs mapping logical P2P overlay networks. A case study, regarding the deployment of DNK-WSD for information sharing in real time collaborative web applications, demonstrates the validity of DNK-WSD in terms of fast propagation of the shared data, low network load and reliability. © 2007 IEEE.

P2P communities, is a method for arranging large numbers of peers in a self configuring peer relationship based on declared attributes (or interests) of the participating peers. This method is expected to have an impact in sharing of resources and pruning of search spaces based on the interests of the clients. Current peer-to-peer systems are targeted for information sharing, file storage, searching and indexing often using an overlay network. In this paper we expand the scope of peer-to-peer systems to include the concept of a business environment analogous to a "stock market". Our work focuses on efficient methods to discover trustworthy peers in the P2P network. We investigate the behavior of randomly created relationships formed during transaction between Vendors and Emptors. Discovering services on the fly is essential to being able to identify profitable oriented transactions. In addition, efficient Vendor/Emptor based algorithms allow us to manage quickly changing market trends. Moreover the inclusion of the concept of trading policies among business communities enhances the probability of mutual gain.

We propose and study a class of structured and dynamic information push and pull protocols for wireless sensor networks. For structured information dissemination, our study focuses on the impact of various information demand characteristics on dissemination along some type of backbone structures. Our exploration of dynamic information push and pull focuses on finding optimal strategies in a distributed manner without prior knowledge of information demand characteristics and/or with heterogeneous query distributions. Our theoretical analysis uses a simple grid structure, but the protocol is applicable to arbitrary network topologies. A distributed traffic information system is used as the context of study and the simulation study uses a microscopic traffic simulator to demonstrate some of the ideas discussed in the paper.

Some scholars provided the discernibility matrix based on the positive region. The time complexity of the algorithm for computing core with this discernibility matrix is O(|C| |U|(2)). For cutting down the time complexity of the algorithm, the definition of simplified discernibility matrix based on the positive region and the corresponding definition of the core are provided. At the same time, it is proved that this core is equivalent to the core based on the positive region. Since the partition of U/C is the key process for computing simplified discernibility matrix, a quick algorithm for computing U/C is designed with the idea of radix sorting. Its time complexity is O(|C||U|). On this condition, a new algorithm for computing core based on the positive region is designed with the simplified discernibility. Its time complexity is cut down to max{O(|C||U '(pos)| |U/C|), O(|C| |U|)}.

The popularity of online free album services in the recent prevailing Web2.0 paradigm has posed great challenges to the existing image storage systems. In this paper, we analyze the characteristics of online image storage techniques from a system perspective. We present a novel framework called OBSI, which stands for an object based storage system for storing and retrieving images of online album services. In the design of OBSI, we employ a novel divide and conquer approach which subdivides OBSI into two layers: an object layer and a chunk layer. The chunk layer handles the "dirty work", such as disk space management and reliability guarantee. The object layer provides a uniform object storage and retrieval interface to applications. OBSI reduces disk access by employing a simple and yet effective storage allocation algorithm which allocates storage objects continuously as clustered to their respective metadata Experimental results show that OBSI provides high efficiency and throughput in image storage and retrieval services.
