As communication networks play an important role in today's life, network reliability becomes more critical than ever. Traditionally, network reliability is measured by connectivity or traffic volume. However, most of performance degradation problems are correlated with routing dynamic and congestion. It is necessary to include the both routing dynamics and congestion into network reliability computation. This paper proposes a new framework to compute the reliability. In this framework, the effects of multiple facts such as routing dynamics, traffic pattern and congestion probability are investigated. The reliability based on the proposed framework provides a new way for network operator to evaluate the performance of the IP network.

Due to the rising popularity of multimedia applications and potential commercial usages of mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs), quality of service (QoS) in MANET has become necessary to support those needs. In this paper, we propose a QoS aware multicast routing protocol (QMRP) based on mesh architecture which offers bandwidth guarantees for applications in MANETs. Experimental evaluations are carried out in a simulated environment. The results show that the proposed protocol outperforms ODMRP, a mesh-based multicast routing protocol in a variety of environments.

Ad-hoc agent networks are self-organizing societies of agents. Each society of agents is composed of autonomous agents forming an ad-hoc network having no infrastructure. A network community has an interface agent that serves as the certified access point for that network. Communication between two agents within a society requires the cooperation of other agents in the society who will act as intermediaries. This paper proposes an incentive-based mechanism to promote trusted collaboration among agents within a society. Based on this mechanism and through the certified interface agents an agent in one society can securely interact with one or more agents in another society.

Minimum disc cover problem which is NP-hard is kernel of node scheduling protocol in wireless sensor networks. Size of disc cover set obtained by approximate algorithm determines performance of node scheduling protocol. But the approximation ratios of present approximate algorithms aren't good. This paper proposes a local Voronoi diagrams-based approximate algorithm which can obtain a minimal disc cover set. Theoretical analyses show that the approximation ratio of this algorithm is less than 3. Experiments show that the size of disc cover set obtained by this algorithm is less than 43% of present algorithms and the average coverage degree is around 2.11 which are 1.7 times of optimal.

This paper points out that the reason why the traditional shortest-path algorithms can not effectively find out the shortest paths in time-dependent networks is the existence of non-FIFO arc, and presents the discriminant theorem to distinguish non-FIFO arc from FIFO arc. The paper also provides the method to discriminate the non-FIFO arc and calculate the waiting interval and the optimal departure time of non-FIFO arc, and converts non-FIFO arc into FIFO arc. Based on the traditional Dijkstra algorithm, this paper develops the improved shortest-path algorithm in time-dependent network.

Identifying code is a concept for undirected graph and can be applied to target identification. Its ability of identification comes from a fact that different elements in a system may have different neighbors. In this paper we extend the concept to directed graph. Then the determination rules, the concept of optimal identifying code, the formulation with integer program, and the solving steps are all extended. In this way, the identifying code problem and the alarm placement problem in earlier literatures are linked together and solved together.

In this paper, we propose a new structure-based approach, called Xregion, to store XML data in relational databases. Our approach first partitions an XML document into several disjoint regions according to the cardinality of element nodes, and then maps these regions into separate relations. Our experimental results demonstrate that the proposed approach dramatically improves the performance of queries on the XML data over the existing approaches.

Targeted immunization has been studied as an applicable measure for network epidemics. Unless global information is collected, existing targeted strategies are short of strength in organizing a potent structure to spread the vaccines fleetly. We propose a novel dynamic immunization mechanism, called OnRipple, to propagate vaccines in susceptible-infected-removed (SIR) epidemiological model. With a light-weighted, scalable and distributed framework and an "axis" structure, OnRipple builds-up an effective overlay network. Thus, nodes have essential sampling information of the whole network and targeted immunization can be easily implemented. Nodes are also able to radiate vaccines to both nearby and distant participants almost at the same time. We analyze the performance of this strategy by simulations on small-world networks. On average, OnRipple is 34 % faster than traditional targeted immunization. It is proven to be flexible and effective in large-scale peer-to-peer (P2P) networks and scale-free networks.
