Hierarchical prosody structure generation is a key component for a speech synthesis system. One major feature of the prosody of Mandarin Chinese speech flow is prosodic phrase grouping. In this paper three methods are proposed to predict prosodic phrase. The first is a statistic probability model, which efficiently combines the local POS and word length information. Experiments show by choosing appropriate threshold the model can reach a high precision and high recall ratio. Secondly we use the decision tree learning algorithm combined with the pause rules of Chinese empty words to predict prosodic phrase boundary in unrestricted Chinese text. The experiments show that the approach improves overall performance. Another is an SVM-based method. The precision and recall ratio are improved after using SVM classifier.

The rapid growth of the Internet has resulted in enormous amounts of information that has become more difficult to access efficiently. The primary goal of this research is to create an efficient tool that is able to summarize large documents automatically. We propose concept chains to link semantically-related concepts based on Hownet knowledge database to improve the performance of text summarization and suit Chinese text. Lexical chains is a technique for identifying semantically-related terms in text. The resulting concept chains are then used to identify candidate sentences useful for extraction. Moreover, the other method based on structural features which can makes the summary of the text have more general content and more balance is also proposed. The final experimental results proved the effectiveness of our methods.

In traditional cellular systems, the call requests initiated by mobile stations (MSs) must be carried through a base station (BS) via the cellular interface, but when MSs are located in the dead spots, their call requests will be blocked because the MSs cannot communicate with the BS. It is considered to relay these blocked communication traffic by using ad hoc relaying, which will improve the performance of the system as a whole. This paper firstly introduces a novel architecture of two-hop-relay cellular system, and analyzes the communication traffic characteristics of the traditional cellular system and two-hop-relay cellular system respectively in the dead spots environment. Numerical results show that the two-hop- relay cellular system outperforms the traditional cellular system in terms of the call blocking rate when considering the impact of dead spots.

Wide-area distributed systems like computational grids are emergent infrastructures for high-performance parallel applications. On these systems, communication mechanisms have to deal with many issues, including: private networks, heterogeneity, dynamic resource availability, and transient link failures. To address this, we present pi-spaces, a shared space abstraction of typed pipe objects. These objects, called pi-channels, are asynchronous pipes that combine streaming and persistence for efficient communication while supporting spatial and temporal decoupling. This feature allows pi-channels to be written even in the absence (or failure) of the reader. In this paper, we present the design of pi-Space runtime system and provide some throughput evaluation results with our experimental prototype.

The performance study of the existing noncontiguous processor allocation strategies has been traditionally carried out by means of simulation based on a stochastic workload model to generate a stream of incoming jobs that are submitted to and run on a given message passing parallel machine for a period of time. To validate the performance of the existing allocation algorithms, there has been need to evaluate the algorithms' performance based on a real workload trace. In this study, we evaluate the performance of several well-known processor allocation and job scheduling strategies based on a real workload trace and compare the results against those obtained from using a stochastic workload. Our results reveal that the conclusions reached on the relative performance merits of the allocation strategies when a real workload trace is used are in general compatible with those obtained when a stochastic workload is used.

We propose a new composition approach to mutual exclusion algorithms for applications spread over a grid which is composed of a federation of clusters. Taking into account the heterogeneity of communication latency, our hierarchical architecture combines intra and inter cluster algorithms. We focus on token-based algorithms and study different compositions of algorithms. Performance evaluation tests have been conducted on a national grid testbed whose results show that our approach is scalable and that the choice of the most suitable inter cluster algorithm depends on the behavior of the application.

The mesh-connected architecture is widely used in multi-computers and computer networks for parallel and distributed computing. In such architectures each executor (processor or computer) has up to four neighbors. This condition can be naturally (physically) met in dedicated supercomputers, but the problem arises when there is a need to implement this architecture for computer networks, such as Internet, where each computer is connected to each other. The aim of this work is to provide an algorithm to create an efficient mesh-structure, choosing the best possible connections between considered nodes of a computer network. The proposed algorithms AGAMS is based on the genetic algorithm idea. Some results of investigations of properties of AGAMS are discussed.

Most of the existing job scheduling algorithms for grids have ignored the security problem with a handful of exceptions. Moreover, existing algorithms using fixed- number job replications will consume excessive resources when grid security level changes dynamically. In this paper, a security aware and fault tolerant scheduling (SAFTS) algorithm based on adaptive replication is proposed which schedules the jobs by matching the user security demand and resource trust level and the number of the job replications changes adaptively with the dynamic of grid security. In experiments on RSBSME (remote sensing based soil moisture extraction) workload in a real grid environment, the average job scheduling success rate is 97%, and average grid utilization is 74%. Experiment results show that performance of SAFTS is better than non-security-aware and fixed-number job replication scheduling algorithms and SAFTS is fault-tolerant and scalable.

In this paper, we address one of the wireless sensor network (WSN) management problems - optimization on the execution of multiple commands. The objective of the paper is to provide efficient support for pre-processing a set of commands before disseminating into the sensor network. It is important that only necessary work will be assigned to the sensor network by virtue of strict energy constraint. The problem is NP-hard. We divide the problem into a series of tractable sub-problems along with their solutions. We present a novel hierarchical quadrant-based field partition mechanism to virtually divide the sensor field. We also classify and model WSN management commands. We then identify merging possibilities for a given command, which results in several merging rules and constraints. Lastly, we evaluate a simulated annealing based search algorithm for finding optimal merge order. The results show that energy can be significantly saved within short time-delay while the overall effects of the final command set still satisfies the users' requirements.
