Although intensive researches have been performed regarding P2P network measurement, it is still unknown to what extent the measurement system influences the final measurement results. As an initial study, we investigated the influence of a measurement system on degree distribution of a P2P network. Theoretical analysis and simulation results suggest an interesting phase-transition phenomena when the size of the measurement system increases. A P2P network mixed with a small active measurement system remains as a scale-free network; however, the mixture P2P network will not remain as scale-free when the size of the measurement system exceeds a threshold. We also observed that the number of measuring peers usually has stronger influence than the number of connections among these peers. Briefly speaking, a small but dense active measurement is better than a large but loose measurement system.

A virtual networked environment (VNE) consists of virtual machines (VMs) connected by a virtual network. It has been adopted to create ldquovirtual infrastructuresrdquo for individual users on a shared cloud computing infrastructure. The ability to take snapshots of an entire VNE - including images of the VMs with their execution, communication and storage states - yields a unique approach to reliability as a snapshot can restore the operation of an entire virtual infrastructure. We present VNsnap, a system that takes distributed snapshots of VNEs. Unlike existing distributed snapshot/checkpointing solutions, VNsnap does not require any modifications to the applications, libraries, or (guest) operating systems running in the VMs. Furthermore, VNsnap incurs only seconds of downtime as much of the snapshot operation takes place concurrently with the VNE's normal operation. We have implemented VNsnap on top of Xen. Our experiments with real-world parallel and distributed applications demonstrate VNsnap's effectiveness and efficiency.

Predicting network latencies between Internet hosts can efficiently support large-scale Internet applications, e.g., file sharing service and the overlay construction. Several study use the hyperbolic space to model the Internet dense-core and many-tendril structure. However, existing hyperbolic space based embedding approaches are not designed for accurate latency estimation in the distributed context. We present HyperSpring, which estimates latency by modelling a mass spring system in the hyperbolic similar with Vivaldi. HyperSpring adopts coordinate initialization to speed up the convergence of coordinate computation, uses multiple-round symmetric updates to escape from bad local minima, and stabilizes coordinates by compensating RTT measurements to reduce the coordinate drifts. Evaluation results based on a network trace of 226 PlanetLab nodes indicate that, compared to Euclidean-space based Vivaldi, hyperspring provides performance improvements for most nodes, and incurs slightly higher distortions for a small number of nodes.

Artificial neural networks are nonlinear dynamic systems which are constituted of abundant simple processing unites, their characteristics include parallel computing, memory distributing, self-learning and self-organization, etc. They are used to solve many artificial intelligence problems that are very difficult or impossible to be solved by traditional computer. Based on theory of the semiconductor neural computer, combinatorial logical design of floating-point operation for neuron hardware of the semiconductor neural computer is proposed in this paper. The experiment results validate its rationality.

We present a distributed on-line algorithm for detecting conjunctive stable predicates in dynamic systems. The algorithm consists of a virtual network topology to maintain the causality relationships between distributed events and protocols to check the verification of the predicates over consistent global states. A lazy detection protocol has been developed to minimize the number of messages for the detection. Let M c be the number of detection messages, then the message complexity of the algorithm is M c ¿ M + n 0 , where M is the number of computation messages and n 0 is the number of initial processes the computation starts with. Computation trees are maintained in the virtual network to reduce the detection delay. Suppose that h max is the maximum height of the computation trees. The detection delay is O(h max + n 0 ). It has been proved that a solution is declared if and only if the global predicate is verified during the progress of the underlying distributed computation.

This paper presents a work in progress that aims to reduce the overall training and processing time of feed-forward multi-layer neural networks. If the network is large processing is expensive in terms of both; time and space. In this paper, we suggest a cost-effective and presumably a faster processing technique by utilizing a heterogeneous distributed system composed of a set of commodity computers connected by a local area network. Neural network computations can be viewed as a set of matrix multiplication processes. These can be adapted to utilize the existing matrix multiplication algorithms tailored for such systems. With Java technology as an implementation means, we discuss the different factors that should be considered in order to achieve this goal highlighting some issues that might affect such a proposed implementation.

The task management is a critical component for the computational grids. The aim is to assign tasks on nodes according to a global scheduling policy and a view of local resources of nodes. A peer-to-peer approach for the task management involves a better scalability for the grid and higher fault tolerance. But some mechanisms have to be proposed to avoid the computation of replicated tasks that can reduce the efficiency and increase the load of nodes. In the same way, these mechanisms have to limit the number of exchanged messages to avoid the overload of the *** previous work, we have proposed two methods for the task management called active and passive. These methods rebased on a random walk: they are fully distributed and fault tolerant. Each node owns a local tasks states set updated thanks to a random walk and each node is in charge of the local assignment. Here, we propose three methods to improve the efficiency of the active method. These new methods are based on a circulating word. The nodes local tasks states sets are updated thanks to periodical diffusions along trees built from the circulating word. Particularly, we show that these methods increase the efficiency of the active method: they produce less replicated tasks. These three methods are also fully distributed and fault tolerant. On the other way, the circulating word can be exploited for other applications like the resources management or the nodes synchronization.

distributed Web crawling (DWC) over DHTs is proposed to solve the bottlenecks in the traditional Web crawling. The core of this kind of system is its fully distributed task scheduling mechanism in which the crawlers are treated as peers and the crawlees are treated as resources maintained by the peers. A system model based on the content addressable network (CAN) can further optimize the scheduling mechanism by exploiting the network proximity of the crawlers and the crawlees. In this paper, we propose a new method for CAN in order to achieve load balancing in the CAN-based DWC system. The method not only keeps the load balancing among peers but also keeps the distance between peers and resources very short in our simulations. The shortened peer-resource distance fulfills the need of shortening crawler-crawlee latencies.

This paper focuses on an extensible framework for the development of parallel/distributed population-based algorithms. This framework uses mobile agents launched into different hosts on available networked PCs and cooperating among them to solve large combinatorial problems efficiently. The execution environment used to realize our framework is based on the JADE technology. In addition, we define a new information exchange strategy based on a dynamic migration window method and a selective migration model. A parameters adaptation model is also proposed. This model is used to adjust different parameters/operators of the genetic algorithm executed by each mobile agent. The proposed framework has been experimented on an extended set of Earliness and Tardiness Production Scheduling and Planning Problem (ETPSP). Several experiments are carried out on different computer networks of different sizes. Results obtained show the advantages and efficiency of our approach.

Summary form only *** (http://***/) is a GRID Java library (Source code under GPL license) for parallel, distributed, and concurrent computing, also featuring mobility and security in a uniform framework. ProActive aimed at simplifying the programming of applications that are distributed on local area network (LAN), on cluster of workstations, or GRIDs, and of course, Clouds. ProActive promotes a strong NoC approach, network on chip, to cope seamlessly with both distributed and shared-memory multi-core machines. A theoretical foundation ensures constant behavior, whatever the environment. With respect to software engineering and component-based developments, we will explain how the grid component model (GCM), a set of ETSI standards, allows to capture parallel behavior at the level of component interfaces (rather than having them buried in the code), and also allows deployment interoperability with many Grids and Clouds infrastructure. Interactive and graphical GUI and tools will also be presented during the talk, illustrating the components of ProActive parallel Suite: (1) Programming: a set of Java parallel frameworks (2) Optimizing: an Eclipse GUI for Developing, Debugging, Optimizing (3) Scheduling: for C, Calization Java, Scripts, Matlab/Scilab tasks workflows with resource acquisition and VirtuOverall, this environment leads to autonomic aspects, dynamically observing the QoS (Quality of Service), and adapting the execution in order to maintain SLA (service level agreement).
