in distributed Geographic Information System (GIS), spatial data has multi-source, heterogeneous characteristics, so there are data inconsistencies between nodes. Although there were many approaches about data consistency, a single strategy can not meet the replicas of spatial data which has large volume and complex topology. For the particularity of spatial data, through data partitioning, the paper proposed a hybrid replica consistency strategy, base on the feature of spatial data. In large-scale distributed GIS, According to the different update frequency of spatial data, use different data consistency policies to manage the geometric data and attributes data separately. Using above-mentioned strategy to manage spatial data replicas, it may be helpful in reducing the network communication between data sites, reducing the unwanted update checking, increasing the performance of systems, improving the update efficiency of the spatial data. This can complete the consistency of spatial data, and providing users with real-time, rapid and stable geographic information services. © 2010 IEEE.

Efficient processing of similarity joins is important for a large class of data analysis and data-mining applications. This primitive finds all pairs of records within a predefined distance threshold of each other. However, most of the existing approaches have been based on spatial join techniques designed primarily for data in a vector space. Treating data collections as metric objects brings a great advantage in generality, because a single metric technique can be applied to many specific search problems quite different in nature. In this paper, we concentrate our attention on a special form of join, the Self Similarity Join, which retrieves pairs from the same dataset. In particular, we consider the case in which the dataset is split into subsets that are searched for self similarity join independently (e.g, as in a distributed computing environment). To this end, we formalize the abstract concept of epsilon-Cover, prove its correctness, and demonstrate its effectiveness by applying it to two real implementations on a real-life large dataset.

We present a fault tolerant task pool execution environment that is capable of performing fine-grain selective restart using a lightweight, distributed task completion tracking mechanism. Compared with conventional checkpoint/restart techniques, this system offers a recovery penalty that is proportional to the degree of failure rather than the system size. We evaluate this system using the Self Consistent Field (SCF) kernel which forms an important component in ab initio methods for computational chemistry. Experimental results indicate that fault tolerant task pools are robust in the presence of an arbitrary number of failures and that they offer low overhead in the absence of faults. © 2010 IEEE.

Data prefetching is an effective way to accelerate data access in high-end computing systems and to bridge the increasing performance gap between processor and memory. In recent years, the contextbased data prefetching has received intensive attention because of its general applicability. In this study, we provide a preliminary analysis of the impact of orders on the effectiveness of the context-based prefetching. Motivated by the observations from the analytical results, we propose a new context-based prefetching method named Multi-Order Context-based (MOC) prefetching to adopt multi-order context analysis to increase the context-based prefetching effectiveness. We have carried out simulation testing with the SPECCPU2006 benchmarks via an enhanced CMP$im simulator. The simulation results show that the proposed MOC prefetching method outperforms the existing single-order prefetching and reduces the data-access latency effectively. © 2010 IEEE.

It is imperative to consider the concept of sustainable portable computing as the role of such devices increases our lives. With the emergence of the cloud computing paradigm, there will be an increased reliance on wireless communication from portable computing devices to more powerful centralized servers. This paradigm shift to 'thin-clients' presents an opportunity to make portable computing more sustainable by shifting more functionality to centralized servers. Reduced functionality needed on these devices could mean a slower rate of hardware replacement. This could significantly cut the electronic waste that is currently attributed to the frequent replacements of these devices. One of the challenges in such a paradigm shift to thin portable clients through reduced local computation would be the additional burden imposed on the wireless communication technologies used. Wireless communication technologies must be improved to handle the additional burden that will be imposed. Any proposed wireless technology must also be energyefficient to maximize the operating life time of these battery operated, energy-constrained devices. Software approaches to achieve energy-efficient operation are preferable as they reduce the dumping of existing hardware due to upgrades or replacements, and help reduce electronic waste. This paper discusses these challenges and describes one way to move forward towards sustainable portable computing by considering application scenarios based on cloud computing and communication through software-defined cognitive radios. © 2010 IEEE.

The aim of this paper is to identify the requirements on data that are necessary to support a collective intelligence solution for future supply chains. It is based on an evidential discussion of the information flows in future supply chains and the impact these will have on the life cycle, governance and ownership of data. Supply Chains are facing an increasing complex future if they are to provide the services required while operating in increasingly diverse landscapes and environments. Integration and coordination across the whole supply chain is requiring new approaches, systems and processes therefore data must be enhanced to support these new demands and provide the agility that organisations and consumers envisage. The content of data or data sets is discussed in the context of semantics and Service Orientated Architecture (SOA). A shift in the content of data to include behaviour and increased synchronisation across processes is developed as a possible solution for future supply chains. The evolution and importance of understanding is discussed and developed into a reliance on the integration of data and processes through change control and governance to achieve a collective intelligence across the supply chain. © 2010 IEEE.

Due to the strong increase of processing units available to the end user, expressing parallelism of an algorithm is a major challenge for many researchers. parallel applications are often expressed using a task-parallel model (task graphs), in which tasks can be executed concurrently unless they share a dependency. If these tasks can also be executed in a data-parallel fashion, e.g., by using MPI or OpenMP, then we call it a mixed-parallel programming model. Mixed-parallel applications are often modeled as directed acyclic graphs (DAGs), where nodes represent the tasks and edges represent data dependencies. To execute a mixed-parallel application efficiently, a good scheduling strategy is required to map the tasks to the available processors. Several algorithms for the scheduling of mixed-parallel applications onto a homogeneous cluster have been proposed. MCPA (Modified CPA) has been shown to lead to efficient schedules. In the allocation phase, MCPA considers the total number of processors allocated to all potentially concurrently running tasks as well as the number of processors in the cluster. In this article, it is shown how MCPA can be extended to obtain a more balanced workload in situations where concurrently running tasks differ significantly in the number of operations. We also show how the allocation procedure can be tuned in order to deal not only with regular DAGs (FFT), but also with irregular ones. We also investigate the question whether additional optimizations of the mapping procedure, such as packing of allocations or backfilling, can reduce the makespan of the schedules. © 2010 IEEE.

With number of I/O servers increasing, the load imbalance among them becomes an emerging challenge in using highend computing system effectively. But most of contemporary file systems like PVFS2 and Lustre lack load balancing to optimize parallel I/O performance when facing large number of I/O servers. To address this problem, this paper proposes self-acting load balancing for parallel file systems. The proposed self-acting load balancing builds on dynamic file migration, and borrows the ideas from intelligent computing to enable automatic load balancing. Furthermore, in order to support promising scalability, the self-acting load balancing is fundamentally based on distributed architecture, which also permits parallel file migrations to accelerate balancing progress. By taking PVFS2 as basic platform, we implement the self-acting load balancing, and the experiments show that PVFS2 with self-acting load balancing can reduce the average response time and improve performance of parallel I/O obviously compared with original PVFS2. © 2010 IEEE.

This paper quantitatively studies the trace effects to the performance and accuracy of the BigSim Emulator, a scalable parallel emulator for large-scale computers. To assess the accuracy effect we modify the emulator code to collect the predicted computation time. Four MPI programs with different computation to communication ratios are used as benchmarks. The emulation time and the predicted computation time, both when trace generation are enabled and disabled, are collected on two parallel host machines. The results show that although the BigSim Emulator only traces communication events and dependencies, trace generation still evidently degrades the emulation performance for programs with high communication to computation ratios. Trace generation also significantly affects the accuracy of the predicted computation time for communication intensive programs, which is an issue that can not be overlooked. © 2010 IEEE.
