UNICORE is a state of the art and well tested Grid middleware, designed for seamless and secure access to distributed resources, applications and data, in an easy to use fashion. A wide variety of UNICORE applications for example in bio-informatics generate and compute huge amounts of data. These large amounts of data are riot easy to manage reliably and efficiently with the default UNICORE storage system which is using a standard file system. Hence, the current UNICORE does not support a scalable distributed storage system so far. We have integrated Apache Hadoop and its supported distributed storage/file systems into the UNICORE storage management service. Thus allows to build a UNICORE storage system providing data replication, disaster recovery, durability and elasticity. In this paper we will present the architecture and operation of a prototype called UniHadoop, which provides the integration of UNICORE and the distributed storage systems (DSS) supported by Hadoop and highlight its potential in usage scenarios.

With the growing interest of cloud computing and carbon emission reduction, how to build energy efficient cloud architecture becomes a crisis issue for service providers. In this paper, we propose a power-aware cloud architecture based on DRBL (Diskless Remote Boot in Linux), cpufreqd and xenpm. We also introduce a low-cost smart metering system based on open hardware Arduino board. Composing with existing technique, such as Dynamic Voltage Frequency Scaling (DVFS), ACPI, diskless design and RAM disk storage, our experiment results show that this architecture will reduce energy consumption from 4 to 11% when running CPUintensive applications. In conclusion, this paper reveals that service providers could benefit from diskless design and RAM disk storage if their applications are CPU-intensive. © 2010 IEEE.

We present performance results on a Windows cluster with up to 768 cores using MPI and two variants of threading - CCR and TPL. CCR (Concurrency and Coordination Runtime) presents a message based interface while TPL (Task parallel Library) allows for loops to be automatically parallelized. MPI is used between the cluster nodes (up to 32) and either threading or MPI for parallelism on the 24 cores of each node. We use a simple matrix multiplication kernel as well as a significant bioinformatics gene clustering application. We find that the two threading models offer similar performance with MPI outperforming both at low levels of parallelism but threading much better when the grain size (problem size per process) is small. We find better performance on Intel compared to AMD on comparable 24 core systems. We develop simple models for the performance of the clustering code. © 2010 IEEE.

Position information of moving objects plays a vital role in many pervasive applications. Therefore, moving objects databases (MODs), which can manage trajectory data of a number objects, are used in many pervasive systems. A crucial problem with MODs is how to efficiently track a remote object's trajectory in real-time, i.e. how to continuously report the sensed trajectory data to the MOD with minimal effort. For this purpose, we present a prototypical implementation of the Generic Remote Trajectory Simplification (GRTS) protocol, which optimizes storage consumption, processing, and communication costs. Our prototypical system includes a fully functional MOD as well as map-based mobile applications for subnotebooks and smartphones to illustrate the functioning of GRTS. © 2010 IEEE.

Most of the large-scale scientific experiments modeled as scientific workflows produce a large amount of data and require workflow parallelism to reduce workflow execution time. Some of the existing Scientific Workflow Management systems (SWfMS) explore parallelism techniques - such as parameter sweep and data fragmentation. In those systems, several computing resources are used to accomplish many computational tasks in homogeneous environments, such as multiprocessor machines or cluster systems. Cloud computing has become a popular high performance computing model in which (virtualized) resources are provided as services over the Web. Some scientists are starting to adopt the cloud model in scientific domains and are moving their scientific workflows (programs and data) from local environments to the cloud. Nevertheless, it is still difficult for the scientist to express a parallel computing paradigm for the workflow on the cloud. Capturing distributed provenance data at the cloud is also an issue. Existing approaches for executing scientific workflows using parallel processing are mainly focused on homogeneous environments whereas, in the cloud, the scientist has to manage new aspects such as initialization of virtualized instances, scheduling over different cloud environments, impact of data transferring and management of instance images. In this paper we propose SciCumulus, a cloud middleware that explores parameter sweep and data fragmentation parallelism in scientific workflow activities (with provenance support). It works between the SWfMS and the cloud. SciCumulus is designed considering cloud specificities. We have evaluated our approach by executing simulated experiments to analyze the overhead imposed by clouds on the workflow execution time. © 2010 IEEE.

In distributed virtual environments (DVEs), maintaining a consistent view of the virtual world among all users is a primary task. Due to the resource limitations such as network capacity and computational power, the consistency of the virtual world cannot be guaranteed sometimes. In this paper, we try to address this problem in client-server-based DVEs by considering server side network capacity limitation. We look at the position update packets from client to server and show the impact of packet loss due to server side network capacity limitation on the consistency of the virtual world. We assume clients use Dead Reckoning (DR) models to control position updates. In order to adapt client updates with the server side network capacity to avoid update packet loss, two server assistant DR threshold tuning policies for different updating schemas are proposed in this paper. The proposed tuning polices are validated to have good performance by simulation results. © 2010 IEEE.

This paper proposes a triangular solve algorithm with variable block size for graphics processing unit (GPU). By using diagonal blocks inversion with recursion, this algorithm works with tunable block size to achieve the best performance. Various methods are shown on how to make use of existing profiling tools to successfully measure and analyze performance of this *** use some of the most popular CPU and GPU profiling tools for their advantages and overcome their disadvantages with several new techniques to analyze the performance and relationship of different components of applications. With the presented methodologies, insight information is produced which helps to understand and tune the proposed algorithm and considerably improve the performance of the solver itself as well as the application using it.

The paper describes a way of applying agent paradigm to hp-adaptive Finite Element Method (hp-FEM). We discuss a choice of classical numerical algorithms suitable for incorporating into an agent-based application, along with an efficient way of adopting them into an agent-based application. We define formally a computing Multi Agent System (C-MAS) for adaptive 1D FEM based on Smart Solid Agent model and describe tasks executed by hp-FEM agents. Finally, we spare a few paragraphs for numerical experiments performed with an application developed accordingly to the described model. (C) 2010 Published by Elsevier Ltd.

Large-scale High Performance computing (HPC) systems continue to be designed and constructed to extend performance beyond Petascales using monolithic, cluster, and distributed architectures and emerging multi-core Central Processing Unit (CPU) technologies. As these machines grow so too does the size and variety of applications that run on them. Yet power management and interconnection performance are of great and mounting concern, and to date, the understanding of HPC subsystem interactions and their relationships to power efficiency remains less than desirable. Furthermore, Executive Order 13423 was issued in January of 2007 in an effort to ensure that Federal agencies operate in an environmentally, economically, and fiscally sound manner. It mandates a 30% reduction in energy intensity (MBTUs per square foot) of government facilities in the FY06-15 timeframe using FY03 as a baseline. Two major drawbacks hinder their ability to sustain consistent run time and energy efficient performance: (1) major subsystems interact with each other, often at the expense of unpredictable application run time and energy consumption, and (2) increased power density of these machines complicates the space, power, and cooling problem, resulting in partial or full system down time, further exacerbating run time unpredictability. We believe that one fundamental reason for the above limitations is the operational isolation of loosely coupled subsystems. While the development of subsystems in isolation has been the dominant model for decades, it is inherently unsuitable for ensuring consistent and sustainable systemic performance. We propose that the collection of HPC sub-systems, including the set of running applications must be collaborative in nature, and as such the HPC systems full potential is limited by subsystem isolation and autonomous actions to improve their individual subsystem performance. Optimal scheduling of parallel tasks with some precedence is critical for achieving high performance in heterogeneous computing system. The application scheduling is known to be NP-complete in general cases. The complexity of the problem increase when task scheduling is to be done in a heterogeneous environment, where the processors in the network may not be identical and take different amounts of time to execute the same task. This paper presents a task scheduling algorithm for the tasks run on the network of Heterogeneous systems and represented by Directed Acyclic Graphs (DAGs). The algorithm first assigns the tasks on processors and orders their execution so that task precedence requirements are satisfied. Then it shortens overall completion time by inserting the task into the slack that is created by delaying some tasks without exceeding the current completion time. The performance of the algorithm is illustrated by comparing the scheduling length ratio, frequency of best results with the existing effectively scheduling algorithms, Heterogeneous Earliest Finish Time and Iterative List Scheduling algorithm.
