Reducing energy consumption for high end computing can bring various benefits such as, reduce operating costs, increase system reliability, and environment respect. This paper aims to develop scheduling heuristics and to present application experience for reducing power consumption of parallel tasks in a cluster with the Dynamic Voltage Frequency Scaling (DVFS) technique. In this paper, formal models are presented for precedence-constrained parallel tasks, DVFS enabled clusters, and energy consumption. This paper studies the slack time for non-critical jobs, extends their execution time and reduces the energy consumption without increasing the task's execution time as a whole. Additionally, Green Service Level Agreement is also considered in this paper. By increasing task execution time within an affordable limit, this paper develops scheduling heuristics to reduce energy consumption of a tasks execution and discusses the relationship between energy consumption and task execution time. Models and scheduling heuristics are examined with a simulation study. Test results justify the design and implementation of proposed energy aware scheduling heuristics in the paper. © 2010 IEEE.

Robust and efficient parallel numerical algorithms and their implementation in easy-to-use portable software components are crucial for computational science and engineering applications. They are strongly influenced by the remarkable progress in the development of parallel computer systems. This imposes to adapt or re-design already existing algorithms, or to find new algorithmic approaches, in order to effectively exploit the power that is offered by emerging parallel architectures. On the other hand, the use of numerical algorithms and software in more and more complex applications, to make simulations and computational experiments with a very high level of detail, demands for increasing computing power, thus giving new stimulating impulses to parallel computer developers. The aim of Topic 10 is to provide a forum for the presentation and discussion of recent advances in the field of parallel and distributed numerical algorithms. Different aspects of their design and implementation are addressed, ranging from fundamental algorithmic concepts, through their efficient implementation on modern parallel architectures, up to software design and prototyping in scientific computing and simulation software environments, and to performance analysis. © 2010, Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.

Transactional memory (TM) is a parallel programming concept. Existing consistency protocols in distributed transactional memory system consume too much bandwidth and bring high latency. In this paper, we propose our Transaction Memory Consistency Protocol (TMCP), and point the new features compared to the current protocols. After formulating our model and analyzing the performance, we found both too much and too little execution time will cause more conflicts, given that the execution time of transaction population follows Gamma distribution. We indicate that it is important to adjust the execution time to a reasonable value to improve performance. © 2010 IEEE.

Much work is underway within the broad next generation technologies community on issues associated with the development of services to foster collaboration via the integration of distributed and heterogeneous data systems and technologies. Various technology-driven paradigms have emerged, including Web Services, Web 2.0, Pervasive, Grids and Cloud computing. Recently, some new paradigms have emerged, including Situated computing and Crowd Sourcing. In this exploratory paper, we aim to be visionary, thus, we offer an overview highlighting relationships between these paradigms, the goal is to present how these fit into the broader picture of IT. More specifically, to discuss how these could help coin and prompt future direction of their usage (integration) in various real-world scenarios. A disaster management scenario is presented to illustrate the big picture's model architecture, as well as briefly discuss the potential impact resulting from the collective computational intelligence approach. © 2010 IEEE.

Multicore architectures featuring specialized accelerators are getting an increasing amount of attention, and this success will probably influence the design of future High Performance computing hardware. Unfortunately, programmers are actually having a hard time trying to exploit all these heterogeneous computing units efficiently, and most existing efforts simply focus on providing tools to offload some computations on available accelerators. Recently, some runtime systems have been designed that exploit the idea of scheduling - as opposed to offloading - parallel tasks over the whole set of heterogeneous computing units. Scheduling tasks over heterogeneous platforms makes it necessary to use accurate prediction models in order to assign each task to its most adequate computing unit [2]. A deep knowledge of the application is usually required to model per-task performance models, based on the algorithmic complexity of the underlying numeric kernel. We present an alternate, auto-tuning performance prediction approach based on performance history tables dynamically built during the application run. This approach does not require that the programmer provides some specific information. We show that, thanks to the use of a carefully chosen hash-function, our approach quickly achieves accurate performance estimations automatically. Our approach even outperforms regular algorithmic performance models with several linear algebra numerical kernels.

distributed storage systems provide reliable storage service by storing data, with a certain amount of redundancy, into a substantial number of storage nodes. In order to compensate the data loss incurred by node failures, the lost data should be regenerated. Tree-structured regeneration, during which storage nodes may relay the network traffic, has shown its potential to improve the efficiency of the regeneration process in the network with symmetric links. In this paper, we consider tree-structured regeneration in the network with asymmetric links, and analyze its expected time spend during the regeneration. Moreover, we further reduce the regeneration time by constructing multiple parallel regeneration trees. We proposed two optimal algorithms with polynomial time complexity, to construct multiple edge-disjoint and multiple edge-sharing parallel regeneration trees, respectively. We evaluate our algorithms by the simulation using real data measured in PlanetLab. The simulation results show that multiple parallel regeneration trees can reduce the regeneration time by 75% and keep the file availability more than 98%. © 2010 ICST.

Pervasive computing systems often use middleware as a means to communicate with the changing environment. However, the interactions with the context-aware middleware as well as the interactions among applications sharing the same middleware may introduce faults that are difficult to reveal by existing testing techniques. Our previous work proposed the notion of context diversity as a metric to measure the degree of changes in test inputs for pervasive software. In this paper, we present a case study on how much context diversity for test cases relates to fault-based mutants in pervasive software. Our empirical results show that conventional mutation operators can generate sufficient candidate mutants to support test effectiveness evaluation of pervasive software, and test cases with higher context diversity values tend to have higher mean mutation scores. On the other hand, for test cases sharing the same context diversity, their mutation scores can vary significantly in terms of standard derivations © 2010 IEEE.

The scheduling and mapping of the precedence-constrained task graphs of parallel programs to processors is considered one of the most crucial NP-complete problems in parallel and distributed computing systems. In this paper, a dynamic task scheduling model based on fuzzy logic is proposed. The main objective of this technique is to improve the fuzzy decision which is used in task scheduling on a network of processing elements by introducing new input parameters to an existing fuzzy model and, in the same time, improving the load balance on the network in a dynamic environment. The proposed Fuzzy Model is capable of processing inputs from on the fly data that arises from the current state of the processors. According to the proposed model, tasks are generated randomly and are served based on the First-Come-First-Serve rule. When the task is ready to be assigned, its information is passed to the processors for bidding. Each processor has a local scheduler for managing its own activities, which supplies information on its current state and follows whatever decision is given where the fuzzy logic mechanism is used in making decision on the task assignment. A comparative study between the existed fuzzy model and our modified fuzzy model has been done. The comparative results show that our modified fuzzy model outperforms the existed one.

Automatic parallelization has become a mainstream research topic for different reasons. For example, mul-ticore architectures, which are now present even in laptops, have awakened an interest in software tools that can exploit the computing power of parallel processors. distributed and (multi)agent systems also benefit from techniques and tools for deciding in which locations should processes be run to make a better use of the available resources. Any decision on whether to execute some processes in parallel or sequentially must ensure correctness (i.e., the parallel execution obtains the same results as the sequential), but also has to take into account a number of practical overheads, such as those associated with tasks creation, possible migration of tasks to remote processors, the associated communication overheads, etc. Due to these overheads and if the granularity of parallel tasks, i.e., the "work available" underneath them, is too small, it may happen that the costs are larger than the benefits in their parallel execution. Thus, the aim of granularity control is to change parallel execution to sequential execution or vice-versa based on some conditions related to grain size and overheads. In this work, we have applied fuzzy logic to automatic granularity control in parallel/distributed computing and proposed fuzzy conditions for deciding whether to execute some given tasks in parallel or sequentially. We have compared our proposed fuzzy conditions with existing (conservative) sufficient conditions and our experiments showed that the proposed fuzzy conditions result in more efficient executions on average than the conservative conditions.
