Cloud computing has delivered unprecedented compute capacity to NASA missions at affordable rates. Missions like the Mars Exploration Rovers (MER) and Mars Science Lab (MSL) are enjoying the elasticity that enables them to leverage hundreds, if not thousands, or machines for short durations without making any hardware procurements. In this paper, we describe Polyphony, a resilient, scalable, and modular framework that efficiently leverages a large set of computing resources to perform parallel computations. Polyphony can employ resources on the cloud, excess capacity on local machines, as well as spare resources on the supercomputing center, and it enables these resources to work in concert to accomplish a common goal. Polyphony is resilient to node failures, even if they occur in the middle of a transaction. We will conclude with an evaluation of a production-ready application built on top of Polyphony to perform image-processing operations of images from around the solar system, including Mars, Saturn, and Titan. © 2010 IEEE.

Extensive computing power has been used to tackle issues such as climate changes, fusion energy, and other pressing scientific challenges. These computations produce a tremendous amount of data;however, many of the programs used to analyze this data currently only run a single processor. In this work, we explore the possibility of using the emerging cloud computing platform to parallelize such sequential data analysis tasks. As a proof of concept, we wrap a program for analyzing trends of tropical cyclones in a set of virtual machines (VMs). This approach allows the user to keep their familiar data analysis environment in the VMs, while we provide the coordination and data transfer services to ensure the necessary input and output are directed to the desired locations. This work extensively exercises the networking capability of the cloud computing systems and has revealed a number of weaknesses in the current cloud system software. In our tests, we are able to scale the parallel data analysis job to a modest number of VMs and achieve a speedup that is comparable to running the same analysis task using MPI. However, compared to MPI based parallelization, the cloud-based approach has a number of advantages. The cloud-based approach is more flexible because the VMs can capture arbitrary software dependencies without requiring the user to rewrite their programs. The cloud-based approach is also more resilient to failure;as long as a single VM is running, it can make progress while as soon as one MPI node fails the whole analysis job fails. In short, this initial work demonstrates that a cloud computing system is a viable platform for distributed scientific data analyses traditionally conducted on dedicated supercomputing systems.

The traditional system controller in symmetric multi-processors (SMP) controls the memory, so it is suitable for the shared memory programming model. With the emergence of the processors which integrate memory controllers, the system controller seems less important than before. However, since the system controller resides in the center of a computer system, it acts as an artery which directly connects to the processors and the high-speed IO devices. Thus making full use of its position advantage can no doubt gain performance enhancement. By now, the message passing programming model has dominated the high performance computing (HPC) field, however the system controller makes little contribution to it. Thus, a system controller called HPP controller which is dedicated for the message passing programming model is presented in this paper. The HPP controller is connected to several processors simultaneously, and the communication between these processors uses the message passing programming model. The HPP controller has powerful DMA engines embedded which can provide flexible and sufficient message passing capability. Two key techniques: supporting arbitrary byte alignment and virtualizing the DMA engine are introduced in detail. The preliminary result of the FPGA prototype shows that the HPP controller has ultra low hardware latency and relatively high bandwidth. Besides, the NPB result shows that it can provide high efficiency for the message passing programming model. © 2010 IEEE.

A challenging multi-objective sequencing problem with variable launching intervals has been studied. A novel hybrid algorithm based on a multi-objective clonal selection algorithm and a co-evolutionary algorithm has been developed for the system control. The clonal selection algorithm for the multi-objective sequencing models is worked as a driving system, while the co-evolutionary immune algorithm for acquiring launching intervals is subordinated and run in parallel on distributed systems in order to guarantee the real-time requirements. The evolution operators such as coding, decoding and collaboration formation mechanism are defined. The scheme has been proven to M improve the system optimization and achieve better solution sets as compared with other available algorithms.

Recent years have witnessed growing interest in parallelising constraint solving based on tree search (see [1] for a brief overview). One approach is search-space splitting in which different parts of the tree are explored in parallel (e.g. [2]). Another approach is the use of algorithm portfolios. This technique exploits the significant variety in performance observed between different algorithms and combines them in a portfolio [3]. In constraint solving, an algorithm can be a solver or a tuning of a solver. Portfolios have often been run in an interleaving fashion (e.g. [4]). Their use in a parallel context is more recent ([5], [1]). © 2010 Springer-Verlag.

The Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) has been used widely for large scale applications, reaching entire continents. Within the EU funded EnviroGrids project, a detailed application of SWAT on the Black Sea Basin is envisaged using high resolution data. In order to support the computation, the model is run on a computer grid. The use of the SWAT allowed for such computations with little adaptations to the source. A 3-step procedure is needed. In the first step, a program is run in order to split the model into several sub-models. Afterwards, the sub-models are run in parallel. In a last step, the outputs of the sub-basins are collected at a central computer and the routing is performed. High computations are also needed when simulations have to be repeated, such as for sensitivity, calibration and uncertainty analysis. In these cases, the simulations are repeated for different parameter sets. In this paper, we discuss the gridification of the algorithm "LH-OAT" that performs sensitivity analysis and has been linked to the SWAT model. The results show a clear improvement in calculation time. Nevertheless, it is concluded that the parallel computing of a distributed model is mainly beneficial for large scale applications with high resolution, while running the sensitivity analysis algorithm has more general and obvious benefit. In a next step, the gridification will be optimised depending on the application and the overheads that are due to submission and receiving of files, as well as potential waiting times for executions on the grid.

In the system of the PV grid-connected generation, because of the dispersion of the PV panel, difference of the sun radiation condition and the shadow of a part of the PV panel, they will cause the serious loss of energy for the parallel PV panel. In order to overcoming energy loss and raise the efficiency of the PV system, a new maximum power point tracking method called distributed variable step duty ratio perturb method is put forward. The distributed MPPT method overcomes the shortcomings to generate electricity quantity to descend because of the dispersion of the PV panel. The variable step duty ratio perturbing method speed quickly and is more suitable for this kind of distributed generation system. The hardware adopts DC/DC electric circuit to regulate PWM duty ratio. The software adopts TMS320-2812. An example is given to show that this method is able to realize distributed MPPT. In addition, the calculation speed of the approach is quick, accuracy of the approach is better, and the system has a high stability. © 2010 IEEE.

Collaboration and self-organization are hallmarks of many biological systems. We present the design for an intelligent decision support system that employs these characteristics: it works through a collaborative, self-organizing network of intelligent agents. Developed for the realm of Marine Safety and Security, the goal of the system is to assist in the management of a complex array of resources in both a routine and emergency role. Notably, this system must be able to handle a dynamic environment and the existence of uncertainty. This paper shows how hierarchical organisation of data from construction and built infrastructure can help to overcome limitations of nowadays systems that arise from distributed storing and different file formats. This hierarchy, once established, can then be used to ensure fast access to vast amounts of distributed data and enriches the information basis by spatial context, such that information spread over former distinct storage locations are connected to each other and therefore can be treated in a combined and unified fashion. Since in our approach an octree structure is used to hold the spatial assembly of the models, many properties such as intersection detection of objects or voxel representations can be evaluated efficiently, to still have access to the original geometry if necessary - each voxel of the octree stores an additional link to the respective CAD entity.
