Providing recall-guaranteed search is critical for P2P networks. While building semantic overlay improves search performance, existing designs suffer from a tradeoff between search time and search quality (i.e. high recall). Moreover, they require to use high control overhead for overlay maintenance. In this paper, we present rSearch to achieve fast search with guaranteed high recall. The rSearch-enabled overlay topology looks like a ring, augmented with semantic chord links. Given a query, rSearch uses multiple query walkers that traverse on the ring independently to find relevant semantic nodes for answers. The ring structure facilitates fast and low-redundancy query forwarding, while the abundant semantic chord links enable large semantic clusters. Bloom Filter is used to encode and compress node semantic summaries, greatly saving control overhead. rSearch further considers churn resilience and network awareness to enhance system performance. Extensive simulations with real-life file sharing trace and network latency trace show that rSearch greatly outperforms GES. © 2010 IEEE.

In shared data centres, accurate models of workloads are indispensable in the process of autonomic resource scheduling. Facing the problem of parameterizing the vast space of big MAPs in order to fit the real workload traces with time-varying characteristics, in this paper we propose a MAP fitting approach JAMC with joint approximation of the order moment and the lag correlation. Based on the state-of-the-art fitting method KPC, JAMC uses a similar divide and conquer approach to simplify the fitting problem and uses optimization to explore the best solution. Our experiments show that JAMC is simple and sufficient enough to effectively predict the behavior of the queueing systems, and the fitting time cost of a few minutes is acceptable for shared data center. Through the analysis of the sensitivity to the orders fitted, we deduce that it is not the case that the higher orders have better results. In the case of Bellcore Aug89, the appropriate fitted orders for the moments and autocorrelations should be respectively on a set of10-20 and10 4-3*104. © 2010 IEEE.

Current high performance clusters are equipped with high bandwidth/low latency networks, lots of processors and nodes, very fast storage systems, etc. However, due to economical and/or power related constraints, in general it is not feasible to provide an accelerating co-processor -such as a graphics processor (GPU)- per node. To overcome this, in this paper we present a CPU virtualization middleware, which makes remote CUDA-compatible GPUs available to all the cluster nodes. The software is implemented on top of the sockets application programming interface, ensuring portability over commodity networks, but it can also be easily adapted to high performance networks.

In the context of the prosperous development of Proteomics in life science, protein quantification, especially these based on Mass Spectrometry (short for MS) method, becomes an essential part of research. In our previous work, we developed a new software package called QuantWiz for high performance Liquid Chromatography (short for LC)-MS-based label-free protein quantification. We solved those problems of portability, applicability and longtime running existed in other software for protein quantification based on MS method. In this paper, we first compared the LC-MS-based label-free protein quantification accuracy of QuantWiz with the well-known Census software package. Then we designed and implemented a distributed memory version parallel algorithm for QuantWiz. Finally, we performed scalability testing of our new parallel algorithm and showed that our new parallel algorithm can scale up to 512 processes on Dawning 5000A. © 2010 IEEE.

The electro-etching process is the critical process in the production of aluminum foil. The manufacturing process has many parallel machines with three distinct voltage equipments. Therefore, the production scheduling is parallel-machine and its choices of eligibility. In this paper, an agent-based negotiation approach is proposed to develop a distributed parallel-machine scheduling application in this manufacturing environment. The agent-based system comprises three types of agents, job agents, machine agents and management agent, to represent jobs, machines and supervisor respectively. To establish job allocations, job agents and machine agents have to bid interactively. A negotiation protocol is developed for negotiations between job agents and machine agents. And management agent is added, and plays as a centralized controller and a system coordinator. The main function of management agent is to manage negotiations between job agents and machine agents to ensure that the global objectives of system primary are being observed. It is possible to consider one or several different global objectives such as minimizing total jobs' tardiness and flow time, balancing machines' loading, and maximizing total revenue. This paper will provide an integrated agent-based parallel eligible machines scheduling solution with a better global performance.

The article presents a study and its experimental results, over methods of speeding-up authentication of the dynamic handwritten signature, in an on-line authentication system. We describe 3 solutions, which use parallel computing by choosing a 16 processor server, a FPGA development board and a graphics card, designed with nVidia CUDA technology. For each solution, we detail how can we integrate it into an authentication provider system, and we specify its advantages and disadvantages.

P2P systems can benefit from reputation mechanisms to promote cooperation and help peers to identify good service providers. However, in spite of a large number of proposed reputation mechanisms, few have been investigated in real situations. BarterCast is a distributed reputation mechanism used by our Internet-deployed Bittorent-based file-sharing client Tribler. In BarterCast, each peer uses messages received from other peers to build a weighted, directed subjective graph that represents the upload and download activity in the system. A peer calculates the reputations of other peers by applying the maxflow algorithm to its subjective graph. For efficiency reasons, only paths of at most two hops are considered in this calculation. In this paper, we identify and assess three potential modifications to BarterCast for improving its accuracy and coverage (fraction of peers for which a reputation value can be computed). First, a peer executes maxflow from the perspective of the node with the highest betweenness centrality in its subjective graph instead of itself. Second, we assume a gossiping protocol that gives each peer complete information about upload and download activities in the system, and third, we lift the path length restriction in the maxflow algorithm. To assess these modifications, we crawl the Tribler network and collect the upload and download actions of the peers for three months. We apply BarterCast with and without the modifications on the collected data and measure accuracy and coverage. ©2010 IEEE.

NPD (New Product Development) is the most important stage in product life cycle in that NPD determines 80% of product cost. An NPD process is composed of certain parallel and sequential activities, which are fulfilled by a core company and some distributed satellite companies. Companies involved in NPD activities form design chains that usually operate concurrently. Facing a highly market oriented and quickly changing business environment, companies in design chains must frequently adjust themselves to deal with uncertainties. In distributed design chain network, core companies, loosely coupled with satellites, pursue individual maximum benefits subject to satellites' bounded capacities. Conflicts therefore are likely to occur once any uncertainty happens. With no coordination mechanism, such conflicts will delay the product launch and cost companies their competitive positions. This study tries to solve the conflict problem by proposing a coordination mechanism. To build the mechanism, the congestion games model is adopted to formulate the design chain dynamic conflict problem, and then software agents are applied to implement it. This study takes an example to demonstrate the operation of the coordination mechanism, the demonstration finally are analyzed to discuss the performance of the proposed mechanism.

Over the past decade, the trajectory to the petascale has been built on increased complexity and scale of the underlying parallel architectures. Meanwhile, software developers have struggled to provide tools that maintain the productivity of computational science teams using these new systems. In this regard, Global Address Space (GAS) programming models provide a straightforward and easy to use addressing model, which can lead to improved productivity. However, the scalability of GAS depends directly on the design and implementation of the runtime system on the target petascale distributed-memory architecture. In this paper, we describe the design, implementation, and optimization of the Aggregate Remote Memory Copy Interface (ARMCI) runtime library on the Cray XT5 2.3 PetaFLOPs computer at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. We optimized our implementation with the flow intimation technique that we have introduced in this paper. Our optimized ARMCI implementation improves scalability of both the Global Arrays (GA) programming model and a real-world chemistry application - NWChem - from small jobs up through 180,000 cores.
