This paper considers parallel Grobner bases algorithms on distributed memory parallel computers with multi-core compute nodes. We improve the pure distributed algorithm by an hybrid approach where on the compute nodes parallel threads for each available processor can be used. With this algorithm only one communication channel between the master node and the worker nodes is needed. By this we also improve memory footprint by sharing the polynomials in memory between the threads on a node. The communication is slightly more complicated and requires tagged messages to differentiate between request and result messages sent by multiple threads. Java object serialization is improved by using marshalled objects to reduce serialization overhead in the distributed list communication.

Semantic search importance is growing each day as millions of people around the world need to obtain objective and concrete information. Guided-based systems are an alternative to natural language systems regarding the query construction method. However, current guided-based systems perform query validation only at a syntactical level. In this paper we address the semantic validation of queries in order to avoid redundancy and incoherency, therefore preventing the formulation of queries that do not make sense.

Information on the ratings of several features of items can be deployed to improve the quality of recommendations in recommender systems by incorporating them into similarity calculation between any two users or two items. However, the incremental information of these features has important impacts on recommender systems. For example, the complexity of similarity calculation is increased and more resources are consumed during the process for generating recommendations. In this paper, we propose several techniques by using this information to provide relevant recommendations and to reduce the complexity in similarity computation by directly matching between preferences of user and the strength of item features.

This work analyses the performance of Hadoop, an implementation of the MapReduce programming model for distributed parallel computing, executing on a virtualisation environment comprised of 1 + 16 nodes running the VMWare workstation software. A set of experiments using the standard Hadoop benchmarks has been designed in order to determine whether or not significant reductions in the execution time of computations are experienced using Hadoop on this virtualisation platform on a local area network. Our findings indicate that a significant decrease in computing times is observed under these conditions. They also highlight how overheads and virtualisation in a distributed environment hinder the possibility of achieving the maximum (peak) performance.

AdaBoost is an excellent machine-learning algorithm, which produces a strong classifier by selecting the discriminating features and combining them linearly. But the computational complexity of AdaBoost algorithms is very high that restricts its studies and applications. In this paper we utilize parallel processing techniques to implement the parallel algorithm based on AdaBoost. The experiment results show the parallel algorithm can reduce the run time and has a high speedup.

With fast development of CPU hardware and software, using GPUs to accelerate non-graphics CPU applications is becoming inevitable trend. GPUs are good at performing ALU-intensive computation and feature high peak performance;however, how to harness GPUs' powerful computing capacity to accelerate the applications in the field of scientific computing still remains a big challenge. In this paper, we implement the whole application Mgrid taken from Spec2000 benchmarks on an AMD CPU and propose several optimization strategies for stencil computations in the naive CPU code. We first improve thread utilization through using vector types and multiple output streams mechanism provided by the Brook+ programming language. By tuning thread granularity, we try to hit the right balance between locality within each thread and parallelism among threads. Then, we reorganize the stream layout by transforming the;A) data stream into the 21) stream in the block manner. Through stream reorganization, more data locality in the cache is exploited. Further, we propose branch elimination to convert control dependence to data dependence, catering to GPUs' powerful ALU-intensive processing capability. Finally, we redistribute computations between CPU and GPU to make more advisable computing resources usage considering different problem sizes. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed optimization strategies on an AMD Radeon HD4870 CPU using the Brook+ programming language. Using a double-precision floating-point implementation, the experimental results show that the optimized GPU version of Mgrid gains 2.38x speedup compared to the naive CPU code and obtains as high as 15.06x speedup versus the CPU implementation run on an Intel Neon E5405 CPU.

Large scale applications running on new computing platforms with thousands of processors have to face with reliability problems. The failure of a single processor will cause the entire execution to fail. Most existing approaches to guarantee reliable executions are based on fault tolerance mechanisms. Coordinated checkpointing is one of the most popular technique to deal with failures in such platforms. This work presents a new model of coordinated Checkpoint/Restart mechanism for several types of computing platforms. The model is parametrized by the process failure distribution, the cost to save a global consistent state of Processes and the number of computational resources. Through mathematical analysis of reliability, we apply this new model to compute the optimal interval between checkpoint times in order to minimize the average completion time. Model independency from the type of the failure law makes it completely flexible. We show that such a model may be used to reduce the checkpoint rate up to 20% in same cases and up to factor 4 the total overhead in same cases. Finally, we report some experiments based on simulations for random failure distributions corresponding to the two most popular laws, namely, the Poisson's process and Weibull's law.

Engineering and scientific applications usually require to manage large quantities of data with different programs. The I/O demands of these applications get higher as they get larger because processor and memory speed increase. In order to improve performance and make programming much easier these applications can use parallel file systems. The relation between performance and easiness of programming can be additionally improved by using caches in clients. PVFS is a free parallel file system developed by a multi-institution team of parallel I/O, networking and storage experts. This work proposes a cache in the second version of PVFS in order to improve performance of data-intensive applications with several programs and to improve performance in a parallel program without modifying it to take advantage of the several cores in a processor. We analyze the performance of the cache implementation.

Since it is impossible to predict and identify all the vulnerabilities of a network, and penetration into a system by malicious intruders cannot always be prevented, intrusion detection systems (IDSs) are essential entities for ensuring the security of a networked system. To be effective in carrying out their functions, the IDSs need to be accurate, adaptive, and extensible. Given these stringent requirements and the high level of vulnerabilities of the current days' networks, the design of an IDS has become a very challenging task. Although, an extensive research has been done on intrusion detection in a distributed environment, distributed IDSs suffer from a number of drawbacks e.g., high rates of false positives, low detection efficiency etc. In this paper, the design of a distributed IDS is proposed that consists of a group of autonomous and cooperating agents. In addition to its ability to detect attacks, the system is capable of identifying and isolating compromised nodes in the network thereby introducing fault-tolerance in its operations. The experiments conducted on the system have shown that it has high detection efficiency and low false positives compared to some of the currently existing systems.

parallel and distributed systems have intended to exploit local and remote multi-cores and multiprocessors for high performance. However, without popular single-image distributed operating systems, few systems can utilize all resources automatically and effectively. This paper proposed an MPI-like middleware, Pitcher, to distribute multithreaded parallel workloads across networked computers without user involvement. Fine-grained computational units, threads, are regrouped into bundles based on data locality and scheduling requests. Such thread bundles are treated as load distribution units. Unlike MPI, data and synchronization variables in Pitcher will be automatically partitioned and distributed. A preprocessor transforms the source code so that programmers stick to shared virtual address space programming paradigm whereas the runtime support module dispatches thread bundles and data based on locality. The experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of Pitcher.
