distributed storage systems provide reliable storage service by storing data, with a certain amount of redundancy, into a substantial number of storage nodes. In order to compensate the data loss incurred by node failures, the lost data should be regenerated. Tree-structured regeneration, during which storage nodes may relay the network traffic, has shown its potential to improve the efficiency of the regeneration process in the network with symmetric links. In this paper, we consider tree-structured regeneration in the network with asymmetric links, and analyze its expected time spend during the regeneration. Moreover, we further reduce the regeneration time by constructing multiple parallel regeneration trees. We proposed two optimal algorithms with polynomial time complexity, to construct multiple edge-disjoint and multiple edge-sharing parallel regeneration trees, respectively. We evaluate our algorithms by the simulation using real data measured in PlanetLab. The simulation results show that multiple parallel regeneration trees can reduce the regeneration time by 75% and keep the file availability more than 98%.

Search in peer-to-peer networks is a challenging problem due to the absence of any centralized control & the limited information available at each node. When information is available about the overall structure of the network, use of this information can significantly improve the efficiency of decentralized search algorithms. Many peer-to-peer networks have been shown to exhibit power-law degree distribution. We propose two new decentralized search algorithms that can be used for efficient search in networks exhibiting scale-free design. Unlike previous work, our algorithms perform efficient search for a large range of power-law coefficients. Our algorithms are also unique in that they complete decentralized searches efficiently even when the network has disconnected components. As a corollary of this, our algorithms are also more resilient to network failure.

In order to meet the challenges of significant storage and application growth, as well as shortened backup windows and limited IT resources, more and more organizations embrace Hierarchical Storage Management (HSM). Parts of SAN file systems provide the ability to support HSM, but they didn't provide more details in design considerations and how to implement. In this paper, we present design considerations in Blue Whale File System (BWFS) which is a high performance SAN file system and implement the system. Event, migration and attribute constitute the three aspects of data management mechanism in BWFS. As for READ/WRITE/TRUNCATE event, the problem is that a client directly accesses to storage devices containing file data, rather than through a metadata server. We monitor LayoutGet operation instead of real I/O path. BWFS is a multi-volume file system which can support single name space across multiple data volumes. When different storage devices are managed by BWFS, migration is between volumes in BWFS. We also implement migration between BWFS and external repository. We believe the solutions to the problem we encountered are useful to file system developers.

Recent technological advances in Micro Electro Mechanical systems (MEMS) have enabled the design of lowcost, lightweight sensor nodes capable of sensing, processing and communicating different types of data. These tiny sensor nodes leverage the ideas found in Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) and this has lead to a large number of applications in the health sector. For example, telemonitoring is used to track, monitor and manage patient psychophysical data and help in the administration of drugs in hospitals. In this paper, we present a novel framework that exploits these ideas further, where body area WSNs and gaming have been combined to assist in physiotherapy treatments for patients with physical disabilities or ailments. The proposed framework has three main components, the body area WSN, the game, and the data acquisition manager. The body WSN is fixed to the patient's body and data is collected and stored in real-time. This data in parallel is feed directly into the control services allowing gaming objects, i.e. virtual representations of patient's, to control by physically moving his/her body parts. Whilst the patient plays the game, data is regularly collected from body sensor nodes. This allows real-time data from sensor nodes to be used by the game to adjust game levels according to the medical status of the patient. This allows treatments to be automatically adapted to maximise physiotherapy treatments and speed up recovery. In this paper, we present a working prototype that successfully demonstrates the applicability of our approach. © 2010 IEEE.

The research is based on 10-node autonomous, distributed wireless monitoring system placed in various locations throughout Historical Center of Mexico City to take permanent measurements of the noise levels and stream the data back to the main monitoring station every five minutes and the measurements of signals of the noise produced during the takeoff in a location of the international Airport of Mexico City. As first stage, this paper presents a novel computational model that allows aircrafts identification based on generated noise. This model also helps to foresee potential effects to health caused by this kind of noise during the aircraft takeoff, which is when the greatest impact are generated due to the sonorous levels that are reached. The data acquisition is made at 25 KHz at 24 bits. The identification of the aircraft noise is done through two parallel neural networks combined with a weighted addition. In order to generate the inputs to the neural networks, parameters that were obtained from the auto-regressive model and the 1/12 octave analysis are used. This system has 13 categories of aircrafts and it has an identification level of 80% in real environments.

Network size is one of the fundamental information of distributed applications. The approach to estimate network size must feature both high accuracy and robustness in order to adapt to the dynamic environment in different topologies. However, existing approaches fail to guarantee accuracy and robustness simultaneously in dynamic topologies due to the randomness of nodes sampled. In this paper, we propose a churn adaptive approach to network size estimation - CANSE, which collects closest nodes in identification to each node's identification by sampling nodes periodically. Each node collects closest identifications by two schemes. One scheme is sampling random nodes from random walks along the topology. The other one is exchanging the closest identifications with other nodes. Finally, each node calculates the average spacing of the closest identifications collected to estimate network size. Compared with existing approaches, extensive experiments show that CANSE provides accurate estimation values quickly in various dynamic topologies.

Media streaming services have been much more popular nowadays, and these services consume lots of network bandwidth. Peer-to-Peer(P2P) technology has been employed in the streaming systems to save the server bandwidth consumption and enhance the system scalability. In a P2P streaming system, the quality of the data scheduling scheme will largely affect the server stress that being saved. In this paper, we present our optimal data scheduling scheme to achieve both server stress minimization and fairness among users when the playback continuities of the users are guaranteed. The data scheduling scheme we proposed is based on the maximum network flow problem, and it is proved to be polynomial. Simulations also show that the time consumption for the computation of the optimal scheduling is acceptable, and the result of the scheduling also achieves small node degree bound which makes it practical.

The peer-to-peer paradigm shows the potential to provide the same functionality and quality like client/server based systems, but with much lower costs. However, the resources, e.g. storage space, CPU power and online time, provided by the peers are unreliable due to churn. In order to enable churn resistant reliable services using the resources in p2p systems, we propose in this paper a distributed mechanism termed P 3 R 3 ***. The mechanism allows to reserve, monitor and use resources provided by the unreliable p2p system and maintains long-term resource reservations through controlled redundant resource provision. Evaluation shows that using KAD measurements on the prediction of the lifetime of peers allows for 100% successful reservations under churn with very low traffic overhead. This approach marks a first step for the building of a reliable p2p-based SOA and future p2p-based clouds.

Map Reduce is a key-value based programming model and an associated implementation for processing large data sets. It has been adopted in various scenarios and seems promising. However, when spatial computation is expressed straightforward by this key-value based model, difficulties arise due to unfit features and performance degradation. In this paper, we present methods as follows: 1) a splitting method for balancing workload, 2) pending file structure and redundant data partition dealing with relation between spatial objects, 3) a strip-based two-direction plane sweeping algorithm for computation accelerating. Based on these methods, ANN(All nearest neighbors) query and astronomical cross-certification are developed. Performance evaluation shows that the Map Reduce-based spatial applications outperform the traditional one on DBMS.

Problem-based learning has been at the core of significant developments in engineering education in recent years. This term refers to any learning environment in which the problem drives the learning, because it is posed in such a way that students realize they need to acquire new knowledge before the problem can be solved. This paper presents the experience of a structured problem-based learning approach to the teaching of an introductory study module on virtual machine in the third year of an Computer Engineering graduate program. A virtual machine design problem was posed to students at the beginning of the module. Small groups of students worked on a cooperative learning project for eight weeks, while the teacher acted as the coach and the facilitator of knowledge acquisition. Partial, though not extensive, written reports were collected each week and the student assessments of the learning environment were measured. The paper closes with a list of recommendations intended to assist academics interested in adopting a similar approach.
