Many embedded and distributed applications are based on processing nodes that perform parallel processing tasks. Unfortunately, it is difficult to evaluate the overall behaviour of this kind of applications because the overall behaviour consists of 1) the execution-paths of asynchronous processing nodes and of 2) messages that either activate or deactivate processing nodes to perform parallel processing tasks. In order to facilitate behaviour and reliability evaluation of applications doing parallel processing, we developed a method that: 1) is capable of composing an overall representation for parallel behaviours and recognizing both the defined use cases and undetermined behaviours from this representation and 2) supports calculation of use case-specific reliability values for components. In this paper, we describe the method, present a ComponentBee tool that implements the method and supports behaviour and reliability evaluation of multithreaded Java applications, and finally demonstrate the use of the method with a case study.

Community acceptance of the object storage device model as represented by standards and use in existing HPC filesystems has enabled the development of more complex data storage systems. Object replicas may be placed in a variety of ways to obtain various properties, such as scalable lookup times, concurrent access to multiple objects, and efficient reorganization. The construction of a fully functional object-based parallel filesystem is an enormous effort, so evaluation of potential techniques and algorithms is typically performed by analysis or simulation. In this work, we present an extensible simulator designed to evaluate multiple object placement models under fault-induced rebuilds. We use results obtained by the simulator to weigh the benefits of simple object replica placement models.

Applications can be submitted as jobs in grid. Grid jobs usually comprise the scenarios of file stage-in, execution and file stage-out. These scenarios always run in batch mode. It leads to the waiting of the computational resource for data transfer and limits the performance of the grid application, especially when the application is data/communication intensive. Utilizing the file sharing function of distributed file system, the scenarios of grid job can be processed in parallel, while the waiting of computational resource can be eliminated. Thus, the execution performance of the grid job is promoted. After the comparison of different kinds of distributed file systems, this paper proposes CIFS-based mode for the data exchange in grid job, and testifies the promotion of the performance under this mode. In the test of a series of data/communication intensive jobs, the CIFS-based mode performs better performance than GridFTP.

By recognizing the necessity for preventative and proactive management for today's large scale and fault prone distributed systems, a tendency for these mechanisms has been appeared in recent researchers' efforts. From the birth point of this opinion, event prediction has been known as an effective approach to manage errors preventively. In this work, we attempt to make system performance better by using a job futurity predictor as an advisor for system scheduler. We have a clear sighted vision of failure sources and therefore use a comprehensive data set of system, user and job domains. Using predictor results leads to a significant improvement in performance metrics.

Position information of moving objects plays a vital role in many pervasive applications. Therefore, moving objects databases (MODs), which can manage trajectory data of a number objects, are used in many pervasive systems. A crucial problem with MODs is how to efficiently track a remote object's trajectory in real-time, i.e. how to continuously report the sensed trajectory data to the MOD with minimal effort. For this purpose, we present a prototypical implementation of the Generic Remote Trajectory Simplification (GRTS) protocol, which optimizes storage consumption, processing, and communication costs. Our prototypical system includes a fully functional MOD as well as map-based mobile applications for subnotebooks and smartphones to illustrate the functioning of GRTS.

Multi-island single electron transistor (MISET) is a kind of single electron transistor (SET), which has advantages of the room temperature operating. A novel semi-empirical compact model for MISET is proposed. The new approach combines the orthodox theory of single electron tunneling for single Coulomb island and a novel empirical analysis for a chain of Coulomb islands. The model is verified by the Monte-Carlo method in SIMON simulator, and is much faster than the traditional multi-island SET simulator, which has the advantages for the large scale multi-island SET circuit simulation.

This paper is on failure detectors to solve the consensus problem in asynchronous systems made up of anonymous processes prone to crash and connected by asynchronous reliable channels. Anonymity means that any two processes cannot be distinguished one from the other: they have no name and execute the same code. The paper has several contributions. It first introduces two new classes of failures detectors, denoted AP and AΩ, and presents an AP-based algorithm and an AΩ-based algorithm that solve the consensus problem despite the three computational adversaries that are asynchrony, failures and anonymity. Then, the paper shows that, in crash-prone non-anonymous systems, (a) AP and the class of perfect failure detectors (denoted P) are equivalent, and (b) AΩ and the class of eventual leader failure detectors (denoted Ω) are also equivalent. Finally, the paper addresses the question of the weakest failure detector to solve consensus in an asynchronous crash-prone anonymous system. In non-anonymous systems, the class P of perfect failure detectors is strictly stronger than the class Ω of eventual leader failure detectors that has been shown to be the weakest failure detector class for consensus in asynchronous crashprone system. Quite surprisingly, the paper shows that their anonymous counterparts cannot be compared. Hence, while Ω is the weakest failure detector class to solve consensus in non-anonymous systems, it is possible that there are several (hence incomparable) classes of weakest failure detectors for this problem in anonymous systems.

Efficient indexing structure is the key of multi-dimension retrieval issue. Lots of indexing structures are failed in the parallelism. This paper presents multi-branch indexing tree (MB-tree), using the nearest neighbor criterion to realize the multi space division of the data sets. The experimental results indicate that the structure is suitable for parallel computing and can significantly improve the speed of similarity query.

Geocast protocols can be used to send messages to all receivers in a geographic target area. In this paper we present geocast routing algorithms for Wireless Mesh Networks that are tailored to symbolic addressing using symbolic location names like floor or room numbers. Since in particular indoors no geometric information is available, our algorithms use symbolic location models to derive directional information for routing. Moreover, we show how to integrate geometric and symbolic geographic routing algorithms into a hybrid routing approach which is applicable to larger areas consisting of symbolically and geometrically defined locations.
