Soccer match prediction has been a difficult domain for machine learning, currently outperformed by bookmakers' odds and human predictions due to the stochastic nature of soccer. In response, we focus on a Similarity learning approach. Our research involves using Siamese networks and RankNet pair-wise models alongside Transfer learning to predict soccer match rankings. We implemented these models in conjunction with traditional sports tally ranking as well as graph-based PageRank to attain list-wise seasonal rankings for English Premier League spanning seasons 2006 to 2018. Our models used two datasets- EPL seasonal team statistics and an augmentation of these team statistics with external (monetary and transfer) data. Our models have a lower F1 score than a standard neural network, however, perform better in identifying draws and seasonal teams rankings. Transfer learning models performed better on match-wise rankings while for seasonal rankings, augmented data provides the best predictor (0.72 average). Our proposed Tally Rank provides more accurate seasonal rankings than a graph-based PageRank. Since there is no consistently best-performing model, other Similarity learning/Ranking models can be considered in the future.

In this paper Gaussian Processes (GPs) and the Observation Angle Dependent (OAD) covariance function are used to classify hyperspectral imagery. This paper demonstrates the potential of a machine learning method for use in autonomous mining to identify and map geology and mineralogy on a vertical mine face. We discuss the importance of independent training data (i.e. a spectral library) to map any mine face without a priori knowledge (of any particular mine face). We compare an independent spectral library to other libraries, based on image data, and evaluate their relative performances to distinguish ore bearing zones from waste. Results show that the algorithm (GP-OAD) yields high accuracies (similar to 90%) and F-scores (similar to 77%);the best results are achieved when libraries are combined. We also demonstrate the robustness of the machine learning algorithm for mapping geology under different conditions of illumination (e.g. shade).

We introduce a variational Bayesian neural network where the parameters are governed via a probability distribution on random matrices. Specifically, we employ a matrix variate Gaussian (Gupta & Nagar, 1999) parameter posterior distribution where we explicitly model the co- variance among the input and output dimensions of each layer. Furthermore, with approximate covariance matrices we can achieve a more efficient way to represent those correlations that is also cheaper than fully factorized parameter posteriors. We further show that with the "local reprarametrization trick" (Kingma et al., 2015) on this posterior distribution we arrive at a Gaussian Process (Rasmussen, 2006) interpretation of the hidden units in each layer and we, simi-larly with (Gal & Ghahramani, 2015), provide connections with deep Gaussian processes. We continue in taking advantage of this duality and incorporate "pseudo-data" (Snelson & Ghahramani, 2005) in our model, which in turn allows for more efficient posterior sampling while maintaining the properties of the original model. The validity of the proposed approach is verified through extensive experiments. © 2016 by the author(s).

Daylighting considerations influence the whole design process and incorporate as many conceptual and aesthetics topics as technical ones. In spite of research results and technology advances having occurred in last decades, one can notice that there are several barriers turning difficult its integration to the architecture design. One can believe that the main factor for this reason is the lack of adequate comprehension of daylighting phenomenon. This research presents the development of a Virtual learning Environment (VLE) for promoting the student's comprehension about the lighting phenomenon, approaching the light path and its modifications generated by the main architectural design variables.

Blended learning has become a prominent trend in university learning and teaching. This raises various questions for traditional distance as well as face-to-face universities internationally and in particular in Australia. A key area where many issues arise is the development process to create effective digitally-enhanced learning environments within a blended learning milieu. A comparative study of Australian Universities has been conducted in 2006 to identify factors in the development of learning materials and environments that support effective blended learning that is digitally enhanced. The prominent team-approach for the development of learning materials (Bates, 1993;DEC working party, 1989;Garrison, 1989;Holmberg, 1995) has been one of the foci of the study. This paper introduces a novel and generic framework to solve the flagship task of supervised labeled graph prediction by leveraging Optimal Transport tools. We formulate the problem as regression with the Fused Gromov-Wasserstein (FGW) loss and propose a predictive model relying on a FGW barycenter whose weights depend on inputs. First we introduce a non-parametric estimator based on kernel ridge regression for which theoretical results such as consistency and excess risk bound are proved. Next we propose an interpretable parametric model where the barycenter weights are modeled with a neural network and the graphs on which the FGW barycenter is calculated are additionally learned. Numerical experiments show the strength of the method and its ability to interpolate in the labeled graph space on simulated data and on a difficult metabolic identification problem where it can reach very good performance with very little engineering.

How can teachers encourage students to listen in lectures - and indeed to attend them? What about international students and those who have language difficulties? These were the questions which triggered a study of the beliefs of first year students about learning from lectures, and a desire to improve students' ability to learn from lectures through providing MP3 uploads and a classroom set of iPod nanos. Students completed a pre- and post-course evaluation which revealed their beliefs about lecture attendance and supplementing that attendance by listening to lectures on iPods for revision and re-listening.

The paper investigates the possibilities and limitations of the interpretation and interpolation of the traditional architectural principles into the contemporary architecture, in order of achieving a higher level of sustainability and autonomy. It is based on a comparison between a traditional and a twentieth century house. Yurt, traditional nomad tent from the Central Asia responds to many sustainability criteria set for a sustainable house such as natural cooling and ventilation, dematerialization, maximum volume enclosed by the minimum surface, use of innocuous materials, minimum disturbance of the terrain, use of local materials. The Dymaxion House (designed by R. B. Fuller between 1927 and 1946) bares numerous resemblances with yurts, i.e. the form, volumes/surface ratio, ventilation system, etc. On the other hand, it was designed as an entirely industrially produced artefact, implying the use of different kind of materials (mainly of them recyclable metals), etc. The traditional principles can be successfully applied in the new buildings in order to make them more energetically efficient and effective, but some adjustments are needed to be done in order to integrate them in the contemporary building processes and uses.

This paper describes what is regarded as having been one of the earliest bioclimatic office buildings designed for natural lighting and ventilation and draws lessons for present practice. The 12-storey State Mortgage Bank Building (now known as Mahaweli Building) in Colombo, Sri Lanka, designed by the late Asian architect Geoffrey Bawa in 1972, incorporated many environmentally responsive design principles long before the buzz words of bioclimatic and sustainable architecture became commonplace. The paper describes the background and context the project was designed for and its design principles and passive energy efficient strategies. It also discusses whether these principles and strategies are still applicable for designing bioclimatic tall office buildings in our time. The authors have interviewed members of the original design team, have collected material from the Bawa archives, have surveyed the current condition and use patterns of the building, have interviewed building users and have constructed a 3D computer model of the building.

EAD is a project with the main aim of developing a blended learning course about how to integrate ecology in the architectural design, both at the level of a single building and of urban landscape. EAD is a project that integrates Swiss Universities, laboratories and tertiary level technical schools with expertise in architecture, energy, ecology, technology, design and communication;the main target are students in architecture. All the contents are in English, while part of it has been also translated in the mother tongues of partners and users. EAD has been used since last academic year for testing the effectiveness of the implemented tools and for analyzing the applications results in order to optimize the overall structure and contents. Then, in the present a.y., didactical experiences with EAD have been carried out in Accademia di Architectura of Mendrisio, in Université de Genève and in Universidade de Brasìlia (BR). Results of the applications are very positive and encourage partners to complete the project, to improve EAD and to explore new uses not only among all the institutions involved but also involving other external institutions.
