For the prediction of mechanical properties of hot strip from production conditions by metallurgically oriented computer assisted simulation it is necessary to model all the numerous metallurgical processes leading to the microstructure of the finished product. The relevant microstructural parameters, calculated in this way, finally are converted into mechanical properties by application Of Suitable algorithms. At ThyssenKrupp Stahl such a metallurgically oriented simulation system has been developed and established under the name TK-StripCam. It is based on empirical-physical models. It allows on the one hand to predict important mechanical properties with considerable precision from production parameters as rolling schedule, cooling conditions etc. On the other hand by means of the simulation system Course and kinetics of each metallurgical process included may be studied. It is evident that in a steel plant such a powerful tool finds a great variety of applications extending from offline use as a tool for development of steels and processes to inline use in the rolling mill to control the mechanical properties during production. In this work details of the philosophy and structure of the simulation system and examples for its application are presented.

To keep steady casting production for strip casting, not only control of cooling and solidification but also stresses and crack formation should be taken into consideration. In order to compute the thermal mechanical stresses and susceptibility of the material to crack during strip casting process, a coupled finite element simulation on temperature, solidification and inelastic deformation was carried Out based on a unified viscous fluid model including elastic, visco-plastic deformation, thermal expansion and dilatation due to solidification. The distribution of temperature and stresses on strip surface and in nip zone was analyzed under various casting speeds. Crack formation possibility index of casting strip at different positions and process conditions was obtained by a principal stress crack model. The weakest positions and dangerous direction subjected to crack are predicted. Effect of casting speeds oil stress distribution and crack formation was clarified and the optimum casting process was discussed on this basis.

A more refined 3D cellular Automata (CA) algorithm has been developed which has increased the resolution of the space and reduced the computation time and can take care of the complexity of recrystallization process through physically based solutions. This model includes recovery, condition for nucleation and orientation dependent variable nuclei growth as a process of primary static recrystallization. Incorporation of microchemistry effects makes this model suitable for simulating recrystallization behaviour in terms of texture, kinetics and rnicrostructure of different alloys. The model is flexible to couple tip with other simulation programs on a common database.

A model on laser cladding of medium carbon steel, used in railway wheels and rails, is developed and implemented. When the laser beam is scanned over the Surface during the cladding operation, phase transformations occur in the topmost layer of the substrate material due to rapid heating and cooling. The hardened regions may later be annealed, either during subsequent passes of the laser beam or by for example induction heating. The current model is a first step towards judging the resulting microstructure and hardness in the heat affected zone under the clad.

In order to address spot welding numerical simulation of high strength steel, the validation of the model developed by the author in collaboration with PSA inc. using thermal kinetics measured within electrodes and sheets is described. The instrumentation techniques experimented here on either zinc coated or bare sheet assemblies aim at hindering interferences inevitably generated by the installation of intrusive sensors. numerical and experimental results are compared for shape and size of welding spots, thermal kinetics and microstructures. All hypotheses and data sets considered to define interfacial conditions are then discussed.

A computer model was developed to study the stresses that develop within the oxide formed on the Surface of reheated steel slabs. The model considers that the crust grows during reheating following temperature dependent parabolic rates, and, as result of its thickness and growth rate, it will be stressed. Removal of this crust takes place by the impingement of water from high pressure jets installed in descaling units, which are located prior to deformation to avoid oxide imprint on the steel surface. Removal of the oxide layer depends on the velocity and amount of the water, as well as the force of the impact. A criterion based on these parameters can be established to determine the feasibility for oxide removal.

The empirical optimization of technologies for continuous annealing of cold rolled strips is very time, material and cost intensive. The properties of cold rolled strips demanded by the customer are adjustable only in relatively closely limited temperature - time regimes. Therefore, it is a complex task to increase the performance of continuous annealing furnaces without disadvantages for the product quality. This problem can be solved by nume-rical modelling the microstructure evolution in the cold rolled strip during continuous annealing combined with experimental simulation of the annealing process. At the Institut fur Werkstoffwissenschaft, Technische Universitat Dresden, in cooperation with EKO Stahl GmbH, Eisenhuttenstadt, a computer program signed as TFB was developed. It is suited for modelling and simulating the recrystallization kinetics in cold rolled strips during continuous annealing. Furthermore, this program can be used for optimizing the annealing technology. For example, for IF steel the present paper demonstrates to what extent the performance of a continuous annealing furnace can be increased. Further results concern the improvement of the microstructure of the high strength microalloyed steel ZStE 380 Z by optimizing the annealing technology by means of experimental simulation.

At high operating temperatures the oxidation resistant MCrAlY (M=Ni, Co) coatings and the substrate alloys are highly susceptible to phase changes, particularly, after long hours of exposure, With the advent of computational modelling involving metallurgical thermodynamics and diffusion parameters in recent times, it is now possible to follow these phase changes and interdiffusion processes through simulation. In the present work, phase changes in the temperature range between 950 and 1050 degreesC in the MCrAlY coating materials containing additions of Cobalt and Rhenium have been determined through Such an approach. Further, using a diffusion simulation software interdiffusion between a commercial NiCoCrAlY coating and a Nickel-base superalloy substrate material at 1000 degreesC has been simulated. The simulated results have been compared with the experimental findings and they are found to be in reasonable agreement with each other. Some deviations observed are discussed in the light of limited availability of thermodynamic and kinetic data.

This paper shows a process of selection of optimum conditions for laser remelting of nodular cast iron. The optimisation takes into account a specified depth of the hardened layer, for which an appropriate energy input is specified while taking into account the mode of guiding the laser beam. Strain criteria are given for the optimisation of the remelting process, i.e., minimum energy input at a given depth of the hardened layer, minimum distortion of the machine part and a desired variation of residual stresses across the hardened layer. Practical tests of optimisation showed the logic of adhering to the aforementioned criteria, because we can significantly influence the quality of the product at lower costs of manufacturing.

In the present work, thermal cycles measured with thermocouples embedded in specimens are employed to validate a numerical thermometallurgical model of all Electron Beam welding process. The implemented instrumentation techniques aim at reducing the perturbations induced by the sensors in place. A comparison between simulations performed oil finite element code SYSWELD and the experimental measurements carried Out Oil 16MnNiMo5 steel in the case of a partial penetration is achieved. This comparison is based oil thermal cycles and also on microstructural evolutions, shapes of fusion zone (FZ) and heat affected zone (HAZ).
