The purpose of this study was to identify the cause of a defect formed on the side of a rolled special section. The defect was classified as a lap on the basis of micrographs. With respect to the position of the defect and to its irregular occurrence, a hypothesis was framed that the defect was caused by increased wear of first roll pass. In order to verify this hypothesis, computer simulation of rolling of the section was performed. It included alternatives using new and worn rolls. The amount of wear of rolls was intentionally defined as higher than actually possible in order to increase the probability of defect formation in mathematical modelling. 3D simulation software Forge2005 was used for the modelling process. The simulation showed that due to the wear of rolls, the width of the section increased markedly prior to 7th reduction. As the forming process in 7th reduction takes place in completely closed set of roll pass no. 2, i.e. with restricted expansion, it was identified as the possible instant of flash formation. This flash then may form the lap in the following reduction. The assumption was confirmed using mathematical modelling. The mathematical model showed that the probability of formation of the lap in 8th reduction was 70%. The most probable location of the lap formation according to the model matches the locations of actual defects. This study resulted in a recommendation for monitoring the level of wear on the first roll grooves and for observation of its impact on the section shape prior to its entry in the 2nd roll pass in 7th reduction.

Currently Changjiang River valley and many cableway hydrology stations in our country mostly have installed cableway automatic control testing system. How to precisely transport signal and obtain data is a very important problem, it is also a key problem to influence the collection, transport, process and predict and forecast intelligently of water resource information. A cable hydrology data transport system based on flush bonding system is designed, by using dual tone multiple frequency to transport and using cable rope circuit and water body to form transport circuit. Through application in field, the system can transport data reliability, simple and conveniently, and with no other additional equipment, can bring a great convenient to the users.

Nowadays, frozen foods are well-known among Malaysia society. This is due to the modern lifestyles which require short food preparing times without neglecting the food nutritious. In supporting this requirement, the manipulation of vending machine is identified as a tool to promote modern and healthy living style, besides to simplify the cooking process. This paper describes the effort on designing conceptual model for a proposed steaming food vending machine simulator. Conceptual modelling is the most crucial part in developing simulation model;since in this part, the developer need to identify the variables;recognize the desired simulation flows and transform the deliverables into visualized form which can be understood by all parties related to the project. In this study, the process of three main states (user selection state, freezer state and steaming state) has been modelled using process approach, which emphasized on the process flow or control logic to construct the model for steamed buns vending machine application.

This paper describes a process flow of data pre-processing for computational experiment in analyzing protein interaction networks. The aim of this process flow is to fulfill the requirement of our graph-based algorithm's solution and to ensure that the representation of protein interaction network which consist of nodes and edges are accurate. The raw data is obtained from one of protein interaction database called Database of interacting Proteins (here-on known as DIP)). We describe briefly the DIP and since our algorithm requires the distance matrix as an input;a few important steps need to be taken to process the data. We limit this paper to data pre-preprocessing only and the algorithmic process is not discussed. © 2008 IEEE.

This paper presents a basic multi-layer model of human movement process. A behavior model is used to simulate actions of individual pedestrians while a cellular automata model is used to simulate their small scale movements. A modular platform, which implements the proposed model, is also presented. The platform is being used to simulate different sections of the Muslim holy mosque in Makkah. Preliminary results of the simulation of circular pedestrian movements in a section of the mosque along with the algorithm used are reported. © 2008 IEEE.

In high performance parallel computing, energy consumption has become a more and more important problem. Under the support of the voltage scaling-available processors, reducing CPU voltage/frequency in the non-critical path is an efficient energy reduction method. This paper exploited the energy saving opportunities in MPI_Barrier operation. Through testing NPB3.2-MPI programs on 256-process cluster system, we found that the busy time of each process has the big difference each other when the cluster is connected by a 100Mbps network. We proposed two low-power methods: one is shut-down based MPI_Barrier (SDMB) and the other is dynamic voltage/frequency scaling based MPI_Barrier (DVSMB). Experimental results show that average 4.95% energy saving is obtained through SDMB and average 12.28% energy saving is obtained through DVSMB, SDMB avoids the performance loss through pre-activation strategy and the performance loss of DVSMB is less than 1%. © 2008 IEEE.

Non close loop manufacturing process, typically in the hard disk media industries rely from its inspection machine to generate production yield temporal data that can be used for future analysis. In order for an engineer to proactively perform maintenance on its process equipment and avoiding unnecessary unplanned down time, they need to be able to predict the outcome of the yield before products arrives at the inspection machine. The future prediction of the yield outcome can be achieved by visualizing the historical data pattern generated from the inspection machine, transform the data pattern and map it into machine learning algorithm for training in order to automatically generate a prediction model without the visual interpretation needs to be done by human. © 2008 IEEE.

simulation is one of tools that has been used widely in several manufacturing areas and organizations as well as in automotive industries. Using a valid simulation model may give several advantages in creating better manufacturing design in order to improve the system performances. This paper presents result of implementing a computer based simulation model to design Manufacturing process Re-engineering for performances improvement. The basic problem is that the current manufacturing system performances have to be improved to deal with the business environment. Projects objective is to design four improvement alternatives design using valid computer simulation model. Three approaches applied as the foundation in creating improvement alternative of the real system are Line Balancing, Facilities re-layout and process enhancement, and manufacturing process. simulation models were developed using ARENA version 7.1 while Statfit and Microsoft Excel were used for statistical analysis. The case study was taken from the Job Shop Manufacturing line of Body Welding and Metal Finish operations of truck assembly line. The result derived from simulation model of current system and four proposed simulation models that are based on three approaches are analyzed and presented to be considered as new strategy in improving the truck assembly line. © 2008 IEEE.
