This work is carried out with the aim of developing a digital data transfer technique between a PC and PLC to provide for the development and testing of multi-actuator fluid power simulation models. Several methods of encoding/decoding techniques have been developed and tested using simulation modeling. At relatively low cost, substantial improvements in the development and testing of PLC control and monitoring software have been achieved which extend to the simulation of authentic industrial fluid power systems.

Position control of a switched reluctance motor based on exact input-output linearization of its torque production characteristics, in an inner control loop, and a simple sliding mode outer control loop using fuzzy logic was demonstrated. Experimental results confirm the anticipated behavior of this scheme. This highlights the advantages of using fuzzy logic systems within larger control system architectures specifically where nonlinear characteristics are required.

This paper reviews the experiences of Bechtel Water Technology in the application of programmablelogiccontrollers. The paper outlines how experience of industrial disputes followed by the introduction of EC Drinking Water Directives during the 1980's generated a requirement to build a substantial number of unmanned automated plants. This resulted in a substantial increase in the number and sophistication of process control solutions produced. It outlines the challenges encountered during the life cycle of these sophisticated solutions and continues by considering how, in addition to the control requirements other factors such as the investment regime, operational constraints, and manpower skill levels influence the design of PLC control systems and led to different solutions being proposed for the water and wastewater treatment plants. It identifies how by the use of dynamic modelling techniques the company has been able to focus the application of advanced technology only to the areas where it is specifically needed. The paper reviews the adoption of PLC systems with SCADA interfaces, in preference to DCS packages.

Since 1970, Lyonnaise des Eaux has developed a policy of automation at its water treatment plants. Originally based on solid logic modules, the technology used was upgraded and improved in the late seventies by the progressive and extensive use of programmablelogical controllers (PLC). Since 2nd of May 1984, the potable water production of the western suburb of Paris (1 million inhabitants) has been fully automated (with around 100 PLCs), and unmanned after hours. Over the years, PLC has been progressively used for supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA), for chemical treatment closed loop regulation and for more sophisticated hydraulic balance regulation of waterworks. In most process control and SCADA systems, PLCs are mainly used for real time process control and data collection when remote terminal units (RTU) are used for stamp dated data communication protocol and monitoring purposes on distribution networks. SCADA systems are now built as patchworks of various brands and types of equipment (when necessary).

Position control of a switched reluctance motor based on exact input-output linearisation of its torque production characteristics, in an inner control loop, and a simple sliding mode outer control loop using fuzzy logic has been demonstrated. Experimental results confirm the anticipated behaviour of this scheme. The exercise has highlighted some of the advantages of fuzzy systems, notably their flexibility. It has also given some indication of the appropriateness of fuzzy logic in two different situations. It is concluded that learning and representing highly nonlinear functions for which accurate analytic expressions are not available exploits many of the strengths of fuzzy logic. Implementing a simple nonlinear control scheme, for which analytic expressions and established control theory are the starting point exploits fewer. Overall, however, it has been demonstrated that it is appropriate to employ fuzzy systems within larger control system architectures specifically where nonlinear characteristics are required.< >

Motion controllers are an essential component of modern manufacturing machinery. The computer control systems are a key part in designing and building production machines. Due to a lack of solid mechanical parts to automatically link motions, coordination and synchronisation problems among the interactive motions are the one of major barriers which can hamper further advances with the new design philosophy. The tight control and flexible operation of a machine with multi-axes can only be realised if the software controlled drives can be properly coordinated and synchronised. This paper presents the concept and implementation of a scheme that uses a fuzzy logic control approach to realise enhanced drive synchronisation. A new master-slave configuration using fuzzy logic is developed. Imperfect synchronisation can be corrected on-line. The simulation and experimental results show that the fuzzy based 'closed loop synchronisation mechanism' gives enhanced performance when compared to conventional master-slave open loop synchronisation techniques.

Fuelled mainly by developments in Japan, there is currently a resurgence of interest in the application of fuzzy logiccontrollers (FLCs). The rapid advances in digital systems, particularly in microprocessors and VLSI, and the huge increase in potential applications areas, has brought design methods for such systems to the forefront. This paper, by reviewing the basic theory of fuzzy logic, develops a design methodology which is de-coupled from the final implementation. It then goes on to discuss methods of implementing FLCs as dedicated logic circuits.< >
