Synthetic environments (SE) offer the tools by which trade-off studies on future offensive air system (FOAS) lethality, survivability, cost and so on can be carried out in a timely manner alongside the customer. The implications of terrain screening, ground fire threats and the difficult area of precision weapon aiming are typical of the `system of systems' issues. The decision-maker will meet his requirements using the SE must decide whether the combination of technology, engineering and mode of operation represented by the models. The procedures must be all-prevading throughout the development of SEs and a management organization in place where a single authority can assure the customer that the outputs from the SE are meaningful.

Software engineering debacles have fuelled a vigorous response in the form of software tools, fourth generation languages, relational databases and yet more exciting plans; major systemsengineering fiascos have, in fact, been even more spectacular but have as yet received no corresponding attention. The paper presents SEAMS, a metasystem for developing complex systems; SEAMS is a systemsengineering Analysis and Management Support environment. There is a need not only to update, revitalise and re-present systemsengineering to new generations of engineers, but also to provide practising systems engineers with modern tools and methods to increase their productivity. SEAMS is intended to fulfil that need. The paper presents a systemsengineering code of practice and a set of standards as a basis upon which to build a SEAMS environment, shows the development stages which must be gone through, and presents a future vision of a fully implemented SEAMS environment in an organisation for implementing complex systems.< >

In order to build the next generation mobile systems, it is important to distinguish between 'physical' and 'logical' mobility as a design idiom. Software engineering methodologies, formalisms and environments can then support the design and development of systems centered on the notion of logical mobility. Analysing and understanding logical mobility becomes an important process in translating system requirements into a system architecture. Subsequently, physical mobility translates to understanding the technological constraints that limit the building of real-world mobile systems. This is used as the primary argument here for evaluating current mobile agent systems, and used as a means to understand how mobile agents can be considered with reference to other mobile systems that exist today. Our main contribution is that the integration of logical and physical mobility is essential in supporting software tools and techniques for developing mobile systems.

It is likely that any group of related human activities will need some form of management programme to see that they are carried through. If the related activities are considered to be a project, then the art of managing the project embraces many skills and often requires knowledge of many disciplines. The information or instructions to be communicated are often complex and, if care is not taken, their complexity prevents them being assimilated. It is here that tools, in the form of schedules, bar charts, networks, etc., are used to convey information. However, before they are used, the project needs to be modelled as a programme. In its simplest form it can be no more than a schedule of sequenced named activities. The more complex projects require more powerful programming tools.< >

A typical control system design package can be divided into three components, input or data acquisition, algorithmic processing and output. The input structures usually contain facilities for the rapid change of system parameters so that the user can iteratively guide the solution to a point within an acceptable performance envelope by monitoring the output and using his experience and skill in the choice of appropriate compensation procedures. The requirements for data input and output are common to all such packages but each package has its own unique protocols, a situation which is neither efficient in the design process of the package itself or in its ultimate use by engineering personnel. It is clear that a general methodology for the implementation of input and output procedures in a wide range of design packages would be advantageous especially if such an implementation was specifically designed to be user friendly, hardware independent and based on an industrially accepted operating system.< >
