A research project at the University of York has been reviewing the area of CAE tools to help design electronic equipment for Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC). There is little benchmarking information available for these tools, and it was felt that further benchmarking must be done. A plan for the benchmarking of realistically complex printed circuit boards (PCBs) using existing commercially available tools is discussed In addition to this, a more fundamental review of electromagnetic effects occurring on PCBs, and the methods used to account for these, has been carried out. Each method makes some degree of approximation, and this in turn imposes a restriction on the accuracy, application flexibility, and frequency range of the tool. Identifying and understanding these methods allows simplified PCB structures to be used, which aim to isolate a limited number of frequency and geometry dependent electromagnetic effects. These PCBs can then be used to validate various approximations.

Common characteristics of the telecoms switch domain includes the availability of design information, the modularity of the systems and some degree of switch self-testing. In this area, research within BT has included the KRITIC and ESMS projects, which are outlined.< >

With the introduction of relatively cheap and powerful computers and a range of comprehensive software packages, many device manufacturers now make extensive use of computer aided analysis in the design of new devices. Although these techniques are beginning to find application in large area power devices, there is still much work to be done in determining necessary and sufficient conditions for accurate and reliable simulation. Discretised versions of semiconductor device equations must be formulated consistently across the full coupled set of equations, and an initially adequate mesh generation may become invalid with development of space-charge regions during transients.< >

The CEGB has devised a distributed computer installation consisting of a host machine and three target machines. One target controls five real and simulated plant systems via a suitable interface. The five plants have been selected to demonstrate different aspects of control such as three-element, cascade and ratio. The plant was designed as scaled down versions of boiler drums, temperature controllers, pressure systems, etc., and has been constructed as working engineering systems using hardware such as motors, valves, water tanks and pipework. Each physical plant system may be controlled by a target computer running CUTLASS software schemes. In order to give more of the CEGB trainee engineers hands on experience of real-time control using CUTLASS, the development of a low cost version of the power plant simulator was proposed. The low cost simulator is able to simulate any of the original sections of plant, or several sections simultaneously by using a dedicated microprocessor.< >

RDD-100 is a systems engineering tool which has its roots in the manual techniques employed on the USA's ballistic missile defence projects in the period 1975-1985. This methodology was very much focused on predicting and then guaranteeing a system's overall response time in reacting to in-coming threats. RDD-100 adopts the view that systems development is best achieved by incrementally developing a system model that will persist over the lifecycle and be shared and managed by the people involved. RDD-100 provides a unique capability of modelling system behaviour and investigating the dynamic aspects of this behaviour. It enables system architectures to be represented and provides valuable information which can be used as the basis for trade-off analysis. RDD-100 also supports system requirements extraction, traceability from requirements to system specification and design, and the ability to generate major reports directly from the RDD-100 database. Above all, RDD-100 allows a single model to be built that can persist over the lifecycle and be shared and managed by the people involved.< >

The analysis of frequency conversion properties of mixers is a non-trivial problem. Schottky diodes are the most commonly used nonlinear elements in mixers and many analytical methods have been used, mainly using the diode current-voltage characteristics and switching function analysis, to study their performance. In particular, with the increasing applications of broad bandwidth enhanced dynamic range systems, the prediction of intermodulation(IM) distortion has become extremely important since the performance degradation caused by IM products can be reduced if the frequency and power levels of the IM products are known. The simulation of the mixer performance, without any simplifying assumptions, requires a fully numerical approach with the power levels of IM products being obtained by a full nonlinear analysis. Harmonic balance (HB) techniques are recognised as the preferred methods for analysing mixers and a number of application specific analysis packages have been reported. The authors discuss the applicability of the HB method as available in Supercompact Microwave Harmonica and EEsof LIBRA software packages to the analysis of microwave diode mixers.< >

Formal methods allow a system designer to describe precisely how the system will be. In the area of human-computer interaction this means describing the structure and detail of the user interface. Giving the designer tools to think clearly about the decisions made must be helpful. However, the problem of deciding how the user interface is to be designed remains. In particular, to use such tools effectively a designer must have a good understanding of how the users think about the task, what their expectations and priorities are. This kind of information is best obtained by user testing with prototypes. An initial design is put forward and then refined using feedback from typical users doing typical tasks with a prototype. This refinement should happen in parallel with the refinement of a formal model of the user interface by the application of domain independent principles. In the early stages the cost of this procedure can be minimised by using simulations and mock ups rather than full prototypes. This is known as iterative design. This paper describes, through an example, some techniques which can be used to get insights about how a user approaches a task and the difficulties they have with a particular prototype.< >

Jackson System Development (JSD) has been used to develop a wide range of systems, from data processing applications implemented in COBOL, to real-time applications implemented in Ada. JSD has also been used to develop systems of all sizes, from the very small to systems implemented in several million lines of code. However, the rigour of the JSD method can make it difficult to use, unless a suitable CASE tool is employed to support the development process. JSD is not itself a formal method but in common with true formal methods, JSD develops a detailed specification which contains all the information necessary to generate a complete implementation. Having produced a detailed specification the question posed within the title would appear to be answered. If all the information necessary to implement a complete working system is held within a JSD specification then it would appear to be highly illogical and very expensive to do anything other than to automate the implementation stage of the method. Although all stages of JSD can benefit from tool support, the presentation concentrates on the automation of the implementation stage. After giving a brief history and background of the JSD method this presentation addresses three questions: 1. What is a JSD specification? 2. What is involved with implementing a JSD specification and how can this be automated? 3. What are organisations' experiences of the use of the JSD method and the automation of the implementation stage?.< >

The Two Button Press case study demonstrates the formal specification and refinement of a simple safety critical system. The work is experimental in nature, and does not yet represent a 'production quality' development method. We present a summary of the stages of the formal development. We then draw a number of conclusions about the application of formal methods to parts of the development process, and their combination for full coverage. The specification method used in the case study combines Statecharts, Z and the SPARK subset of Ada for the description and analysis of the discrete controller subsystem, and a prototype notation, Extended Real Time Logic, for the analysis of the relationship of some aspects of discrete and continuous systems. The combined approach is fairly novel, but relatively straight-forward, at least for the functional properties of the system. Tool support has allowed the detailed examination of certain parts of the development, including the refinement of the Z specification to SPARK code.

The manner in which the software components are integrated into the knowledge-based modelling environment KEMS is referred to as 'medium coupling'. This is unlike 'loose coupling' which uses simple file transfers between modules, and 'tight coupling' which uses a single language for implementation. KEMS runs on PC 286 and 386 systems under MS DOS. An important reason for targetting onto these machines is the desire to make simulation tools available to a range of users at widely differing sites. The concepts within the prototype software are being evaluated using process models for gas distribution and control supplied by British Gas. The knowledge-acquisition front-end is being used to increase the model repertoire, and is itself being evaluated for use by engineers. Further knowledge-based tools which are to be added include an expert system adviser for simulation (to aid novice users), and model validation aids. The overall aim is to make complex modelling and simulation methodologies accessible to a much wider range of engineers and other users than is currently achievable.< >
