HOOD (Hierarchical object-oriented Design) is object-oriented design method which was originally targeted at Ada program development. object-oriented design approaches are based on identifying the classes of objects in a system. Classes are described in terms of their behaviour and structure, with each object modelling a real-world entity. A class and its operations are defined as a single unit. Each object is a member of a class and the operations are defined for all members of a class. The author provides an overview of HOOD and then looks at some case studies of its application at the European Space Agency and Thorn EMI Electronics. He concludes with a general look at its benefits.< >

The parallelism is introduced in the applications classified as time consuming ones to improve their performance measured generally by the execution time. Many studies and experiences have shown that the introduction of the parallelism in the genetic application improves the quality of the result as well as the execution time. This is a consequence of the optimisation technique used in the GA which is not deterministic one and of the role of the random in these algorithms. In fact, GAs offer a good deal of scope for parallelisation. Many of the typical GA operators (crossover, mutation and fitness evaluation) can be easily implemented in parallel, and would substantially benefit in running time if a parallel hardware platform is available. The parallelisation of an application consists in dividing the application into several tasks cooperating by message exchanging to fulfil the original application. According to the fitness of the decomposition we define the grain of the parallelism as the average size of the actions measured in the number of the executed instructions and the size of used memory. In the GA, the parallelism could be introduced at different levels: coarse-grain parallelism, intermediate granularity parallelism and fine grain parallelism.< >

The authors have developed a new modelling language, based on ideas from object-oriented programming, called Omola. Omola is a universal modelling language. It uses differential and algebraic equations to represent behaviour and object-oriented concepts for structuring. The model is the basic structuring unit which, from an abstract point of view, consists of terminals, parameters and realizations. Terminals and parameters are interface variables directed at the dynamic environment of other variables and to the model user. Models, terminals, parameters and realizations are represented in Omola as class definitions which can be stored in a model base and reused as model components. Inheritance can be used for defining specialized model classes based on more simple or general classes. A realization is a description of the behaviour of the model.< >

Current component-based approaches for distributed control systems enable the reuse of mechatronic components, for example specific grippers or conveyor belts, but do not allow full application reuse as the actual hardware configuration is an implicit part of the software solution. In contrast to the current object-oriented or component-based engineering models for automation engineering, this paper will introduce a new Model-Driven Architecture based application and hardware modeling approach. Through separation of the logical application domain and the specific hardware domain the logical application is completely independent of the concrete physical plant configuration. Therefore development time for automation applications can be vastly reduced and software quality can be improved.

The general aim of the work is to allow a non-expert programmer to develop simulations, in particular for training purposes. For example, simulations of machinery to support fault-finding exercises can be constructed readily with the system described. It is expected that the simulation builder will be primarily interesting in the production of computer-based training material, but would be supported by a domain specialist, familiar with the machine being simulated. Other requirements include the provision of an interactive user interface both for development and debugging, a well a a clean interface to special user interfaces for training purposes. It is, also expected that a partially complete simulation can be tested without problems. With these requirements in mind, an object-oriented programming model was developed, together with supporting tools. This system was evaluated by constructing several simulations; one of these is described briefly. An unusual feature, however, is that the objects have declarative properties, based on a notion of attributes whose values are functions of other attributes. The same language and system was used both for building simulations and for user interface construction, although in this paper only the simulation aspects considered. As part of the evaluation of the modelling system, a simulation of a hydraulically-operated steel press was created.< >

A brief account of experiences in using an implementation of PCTE is given. Particular reference is paid to the PCTE OMS (object management system). A description of the circumstances which led to the use of a PCTE implementation is provided. The author looks at experiences with and opinions of the various aspects of the OMS, including comments on the ease of use, comparisons with corresponding facilities offered by other systems (especially Unix), relevance to user requirements, and the differences, if any, that might be expected in an implementation of PCTE+. A description of the use of the system as a whole, with particular reference to the improvements in the PCTE+ OMS, is also given.< >

This paper deals with a specific approach relative to the development of an user oriented interface dedicated to Image Processing (IP). The main concern is to integrate different classes of IP methods into a programming environment which allows us to handle various IP concepts. An object, based on a frame representation, is designed to describe and manipulate functional properties of algorithms. Our approach is based on a functional decomposition of algorithms. In many cases, an algorithm can be described as a specific combination of various basic 'parameterized' operators. We defined a general-purpose system based on a particular data structure which supports these associations and which matches perfectly the frame based object. The use of this data structure as a unique knowledge representation allows us to design an assistance tool for algorithm specification.

HyperNeWS is a powerful tool for designing user interfaces, developed at the Turing Institute. It runs on Sun3 and Sun4 workstations, using either the X11/NeWS server, or NeWS server. It is somewhat like the Macintosh HyperCard system in its screen organisation, with windows (or stacks) composed of backgrounds and cards. Each background/card/stack can contain a variety of objects, such as buttons, sliders, dials etc. The implementation language is Postscript. objects scripts are written directly in Postscript, and HyperNeWS can be used for interesting applications without involving anything but the server. All communication is message-based, where using an object oriented design, if an object cannot handle a given message, it is passed to its parent. HyperNeWs can communicate with external clients. This interface has been developed in C, is type-secure and allows each stack to communicate with a separate client. Interfaces to other languages, such as Prolog and Lisp, are built on top of the C interface. Some of the features that HyperNeWS provides are: simple to use, reusable and good error handling.< >

Tactile sensing is not simply the ability to detect that a contact has occurred between an object and a manipulator, but encompasses a more comprehensive ability to grasp and identify shape, surface features, material features, force and slippage etc. As technology progresses, sensors able to detect these features have become a reality, and the problem of integrating the information from such sensors must be taken into account. To achieve this objective an appropriate system organisation is required to efficiently and correctly integrate the data into a robust world model. Since the number of sensors that may be applied to any kind of problem is increasing daily, modularity, reusability and expandability are important properties. To achieve this flexibility an object oriented approach has been followed in modelling the system. The authors consider the use of a multi-functional tactile system and its integration with an object oriented expert identifier system (OOEIS) which is able to fuse data coming from a sensorized finger, with the aim of identifying the material properties of an object being touched.< >
