In the last years many standards have been created for the industrial control domain. Some have found wide adoption in the industiy, while others seem to never leave the stage of a promising technology. An example of the first type is ISA 88, that defines an architectural design for control applications for the batch process industiy. The author is of the opinion that IEC 61499 is an example of the latter. In this paper the author analyzes how the design architecture defined in ISA 88 may be implemented using the programming framework defined in IEC 61499. Even though ISA 88 and IEC 61499 both follow an event based and object-oriented approach, the author uncovers a fundamental constraint of the IEC 61499 related to the dynamic invocation of services from distinct object instances. Without tiying to extend the IEC 61499 standard, two approaches are presented to work around this constraint.

Acumen is a collaborative research project whose goal is to define the requirements of an applications platform which will support the integration of software products in process and manufacturing industry thereby enhancing the useability and effectiveness of such products. A prototype applications platform is produced and demonstrated. The object oriented paradigm has been adopted throughout the project, with P. Cood and E. Yourdon's (1991) methodology being used for analysis and design. The applications platform itself is implemented in C/sub ++/ in a Unix environment. The authors described the basic architecture of the applications platform and discuss some of the constraints upon its design.< >

The software package "AVS/Express" provides tools for the visualization of complex scientific data however also allows researchers to create experimental data representations. Field data interpretation applications are constructed using a visual programming environment, and includes graphical user interface tools (GUI). AVS/Express presents a screen giving overall control of the operating paradigm. Called the "network editor", it contains iconic representations of programme modules. Coloured lines connecting the modules represent data and control relationships in the application. Unlike other programming environments, no distinction is made between library components and running versions of these components, and dynamic changes of the running programme is allowed. The modules in the network editor are managed by the system provided object manager. Control, messages, and shared data areas are managed by the object manager. The objects defined in the system, as well as the visual programming system and the object manager, are based on object oriented concepts. How the system behaves with regards to a traditional C++ program development environment is summarised.

In VLSI design there are a large number of possible sources of technology and process dependence. Even within a single technology, there are significant process variations between different fabrication plants. It is, therefore, particularly difficult to produce VLSI designs which can easily be used with different processes, let alone different technologies. There are even problems associated with producing a design system which is process independent, with many fabrication companies producing design systems which can be used only with their process-and general design systems which use a 'least common denominator' of process capabilities. CSL (circuit specification language), is an object-oriented language which has been designed, in part, to overcome these difficulties.< >

There is a critical awareness in industry that logic-based and rule-based expert systems are not going to be adequate for the type of complex tasks that typically arise in a wide variety of engineering applications. The main-problem is a lack of standardization concerning parallel implementation of logic programs and rule-based systems. These findings question whether full-scale industrial implementations of intelligent systems should be in these forms. There is consequently a search for alternative symbolic paradigms. The authors have adopted the paradigm of object-orientation in the design, development and implementation of a hardware diagnostic system to demonstrate the potential application of object-oriented expert systems (OBOESs) to a wide variety of industrial problems. One attractive feature of an OBOES is the idea that parallel implementation via distributed object systems becomes feasible.< >

The Department of Electrical Engineering at the University of Brighton has been directing research at improving manufacturing flexibility within the electronics industry, particularly within surface mount technology (SMT) production. One of the areas in which much potential exists, is the development of sensory systems that are able to intelligently control all elements within the manufacturing environment. Machine vision has been shown to improve the flexibility and quality within manufacturing processes. Although the potential for machine vision exists, applications have been restricted to high volume manufacturing due to prohibitive costs and the inherent inflexibility of present vision systems. The authors have been addressing the problems associated with the design and integration of vision systems by developing an object oriented framework to facilitate machine vision development.< >

object-oriented modelling and design is a new way of thinking about problems, using models organised around real-world concepts. The authors present an object-oriented approach to software development, based on modelling objects from a fire protection environment. The model is then used to build a language-independent design, organized around those objects. The authors also describe some object modelling techniques used in mapping the object-oriented design into an non-object-oriented programming language for constructing the system, and a detailed evaluation and review of Microsoft Fortran is presented for this object-oriented application. The advantages of using the object-oriented methodology in the fire protection environment are reviewed in terms of cost, speed, accuracy and long-term maintenance of the software.< >

Where have GUIs gone astray - and how might we lead them back to the light? Graphical User Interface have been with us a long time. Many people have written guidelines that attempted to make all applications easy to use. But many say that things are getting harder rather than easier. Users are still having to learn far too much before they can get started. This paper discusses some of the reasons why GUIs may have gone astray. In the wasteland left by the GUI wars there are a few paths emerging. New alliances may lead us to the promised land of simple, easy to use computers. This paper describes the authors view of that promised land.

The 'Histology System' (H.A. Heathfield 1990) is a decision support system intended to assist pathologists in the histological diagnosis of breast disease. It is intended as a research vehicle to explore the potential role of computer-assisted diagnosis in pathology. It was implemented in the object-oriented language C++ (B. Stroustrup 1986). The system exhibits components which can be easily replaced or changed, or used in new applications. It would seem that a system constructed around objects rather than around procedures automatically reduces the coupling between components. However, there were problems. For example, inheritance was not of much benefit in the Histology System, due to lack of guidance and experience with it. This meant that code reuse at the object level was not fully exploited. A theory of inheritance would have provided an easier and safer way to exploit the benefits of inheritance than trial and error. The authors maintain that formalised theories offer the programmer the mental structures necessary to think about design, which can usually only be gained by experience. object-oriented technology is often claimed to support a 'natural' approach to software development-the authors' experience is that this is a misleading claim, although the technical benefits are real enough.< >

The software package Dymola, which implements the new, vendor-independent standard modelling language Modelica, exemplifies the emerging generation of object-oriented modelling and simulation tools. This paper shows how, in addition to its simulation capabilities, it may be used as an embodiment design tool, to size automatically a design assembled from a library of generic parametric components. The example used is a miniature model aircraft diesel engine. To this end, the component classes contain extra algebraic equations calculating the overload factor (or its reciprocal, the safety factor) for all the different modes of failure, such as buckling or tensile yield. Thus the simulation results contain the maximum overload or minimum safety factor for each failure mode along with the critical instant and the device state at which it occurs. The Dymola "Initial Conditions Calculation" function, controlled by a simple software script, may then be used to perform automatic component sizing. Each component is minimised in mass, subject to a chosen safety factor against failure, over a given operating cycle. Whilst the example is in the realm of mechanical design, it must be emphasised that the approach is equally applicable to the electrical or mechatronic domains, indeed to any design problem requiring numerical constraint satisfaction.
