Three software packages which can be used in matlab for solving various control problems are described. The control Kit, Model Reduction Kit and the Nonlinear Kit allow a large variety of problems to be tackled by the user after data has been entered in the dialogue boxes provided. The menu features of Windows and the graphical user interface allow the user to change the structure of the system being studied, as well as the analysis approach and range of parameters being used.

The matlab and SIMULINK packages were applied to the design and analysis of a discrete-time lateral autopilot for a general tactical missile. The performance of the final design was assessed by examining the closed loop step response. Open loop margin and phase margin were used as indicators of robustness. The design achieved a settling time of at most 0.3 s with no more than 20% overshoot.

An integrated package has been developed for the simulation and physical testing of discrete control systems running under PC-matlab for DOS. The system is simple and has very modest hardware and software requirements. controllers can be designed and tested using the simulator and then immediately implemented with no editing required to interface them with the physical plant. Only the controller function needs to be written as a new code since all data acquisition and file storage is automatically accomplished.

A nonlinear observer has been designed for an induction motor using a parametric eigenstructure assignment design procedure. With a fixed gain observer, the error dynamics are a function of speed and for some operating points the error can diverge. The nonlinear observer has a gain matrix which is a function of speed which keeps the eigenvalues of the error response dynamics in fixed locations. The design, although simple in concept, would not have been possible without using the matlab Symbolic Math Toolbox. Simulink was used to set up and test the observer within the complete traction model.

The MODCONS Toolbox provides flexible and robust tools for multi-objective control system design within matlab, particularly for the mixed optimization approach. It contains automatic function generators which allow the user to specify the design inequalities in a user-friendly manner, the specifications are then automatically generated into matlab code for use with the numerical search procedures. An interactive graphical interface is used for solving the method of inequalities (MOI), which aids the designer in making informed decisions during the design process. A number of utility routines can be used to calculate traditional control problem objective indices such as rise-time, settling time, phase margin and bandwidth.

This paper describes `Power Plant Analyzer', an analytical toolbox for power plant dynamic and steady-state performance analysis, and for control system design and test, which has been developed by the Queen's University Engineering Design Centre. `Power Plant Analyzer' simulates, in an easy-to-use way, fossil power plant systems, such as drum-type, once-through, gas turbine, and combined cycle plants. It provides power engineers and educators with a tool for a deep understanding of the complex and interrelated thermodynamic processes and operating characteristics with manual and automatic control loops. It can also be used for conceptual training of power plant operators, and as an experimental bed for testing control strategies.

Artificial neural networks (ANNs) is made up of many elements with connections between them which influence each other according to the algorithms that the designer employs. Each element is able to influence its output according to an embedded function whose value is derived from a training phase. Most developments employing ANN rely upon data stored in matrix arrays. It was therefore possible to use matlab that is extremely good at developing matrix data sets to develop ANN structures that could be transformed into formats that could be employed directly on available hardware.

This paper compares the results of four robust multivariable design techniquesapplied to the depth control of a nonlinear Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) subjected to parameter perturbations. Three nonlinear controltechniques, namely, input-output(i/o) linearization control, input-output linearization control with sliding mode control and input-output linearization control with adaptive fuzzy control are studied. The fourth technique is the H∞ loop shaping design procedure using multiobjective optimization for the simultaneous design of robust stability and performance.
