Several important parameters must be considered in the implementation and specification of high performance algorithms for pattern classification. These include the use of appropriate parallel processing computational infrastructure and techniques which allow effective pattern rejection and decision making during the early stages in the processing chain. The applicability of syntactic pattern recognition techniques to optical character recognition and document processing in general is demonstrated. Formal grammars are applicable to all aspects of document processing from chain coding binaryimages through the recognition of single characters up to the syntactic and semantic levels. One of the advantages of the syntactic approach is the possibility to perform all the processing without performing any segmentation of the image. And since segmentation is a prime source of error in document processing systems, it is important to warrant enough adoption of the syntactic recognition systems.

To extend the applicability of ultrasonic NDT to structures containing acoustically lossy materials requires both an improvement in electrical signal to noise ratio and the matching of the acoustic wave spectral content to the acoustic characteristics of the structure. Pulse compression is capable of providing both these improvements and with the power of digital signal processing hardware with real time operations. Digital signal processingtechniques has the flexibility to perform filtering operations which are impossible using analogue methods. Also acoustic losses associated with polymers will limit the size of structures making it possible to interrogate using ultrasonic techniques.

Handwriting and handwritten signatures are biometrics which have a legally accepted role in authorization and authentication for many activities in banking, legal and commercial work. The accurate identification of forged handwriting and disguised writing has many applications in such documents like cheques, credit card transactions and last wills, etc. Research is now being undertaken into introducing imageprocessing and pattern analysis techniques into forensic document examination. First it can enhance the existing work of forensic science laboratories and some automated forensic techniques can be used to enhance existing OCR and signature verification algorithms in applications such as banking and sales outlets.

A common problem in imageprocessing is the detection of edges in noisy and incomplete images. Conventional edge detection techniques rely on local gradients which are not robust in noise. Variable thresholding can be used to detect changing edge strengths in the image, but these thresholds have to be found. The present work examines the use of various neural network topologies to improve the robustness of the edge detection in noisy and incomplete images. Throughout the paper neural network edge detection is illustrated by the left ventricle boundary extraction problem in echocardiographic images.
