co-ordination is an emerging area of design management as well as organisational theory and distributed artificial intelligence. This paper highlights the need for co-ordination within computational environments such as those related to computersupportedco-operativework and workflow management. The key characteristics of co-ordination identified are implemented within an agent-based system aimed at aiding computational design. This system has been applied to an industrial case study involving a computational design process enabling more efficient use of time and resources through coordination.

In trying to provide useful software engineering tools that utilize computersupportedcooperativeworking it is necessary to examine the use of cognitive artefacts. This paper looks at using artefacts to support a prototype Soft Systems Analysis tool based upon the work of Checkland (1981). This methodology is concerned with systems definition and relies heavily on people-people interaction. The need for a cognitive artefact arises both from the co-operativeworking environment and the iterative nature of the technique.

Some experiences and results of a five-year project to investigate possibilities of the integration of computer-mediated communication (CMC) with information management (IM) education are given. The author suggests that IM education provides an appropriate context for studying the application of CMC for organizational computersupportedco-operativeworking (cscw).< >

computer-supportedcooperativework (cscw) systems, constitute a pervasive intervention into organisational life. As a consequence, the cscw system designer has to take extra care to understand that different requirements and different technologies will lead to very different systems. The authors briefly survey some of the possible organisational requirements for cscw systems, concentrating particularly on the orientation at STL to professional communities. They discuss the fundamental distinction between two kinds of interactions which occur within all organisation types, the global versus local management distinction, and outline the technologies available to support them. Finally, they mention some of the problems in the design of a cscw system for professional community support.< >

Liveware supports cscw in socially-organised systems involving personal rather than institutional computers. One of the ironies of modern computing technology is that while many individuals now operate personal computers whose power rivals that of large installations, they are without the infrastructure of support that traditionally accompanies such systems. The benefits of cscw, based on distributed systems technology, are inaccessible to the personal user. It is clear that cscw has many potential applications for personal users, yet cscw so far relies on high bandwidth communications, despite the obvious limitations of humans to generate and use information at such rates. The paper discusses the assumptions underlying an essentially zero-cost scheme, called liveware, that realises many asynchronous cscw advantages.< >

HIcoM is an information and communication service for researchers and practitioners in the field of human computer interaction. The paper reviews the use of HIcoM to support the exchange of ideas and information, and discusses the future of such cooperative electronic communities in terms of the concept of the 'collaboratory'. It also looks at the way the sharing and use of information affects scientists and practitioners in different organizational settings, and assesses the experience of the HIcoM conferencing system in the light of the emerging concept of an electronic 'collaboratory'. Finally it looks at the application of the lessons that have been learned in building future collaboratories, and at the possible future development of the HIcoM system itself.< >

Developments in the public network are bringing the vision of the integration of electronic office services and communications services at the desktop into a practical reality. The paper describes how these developments can be used to support a cscw application and reports work currently in progress to demonstrate and build technical standards for the basic technology. Desktop microcomputers will be able to employ the facilities of the Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN), and eventually the Integrated Broadband Network (IBC), to provide videotelephony based conferencing on the typical office desk. A major issue in the acceptance and uptake of ISDN services in day to day office work, is the manner in which the services are presented to the customer at his or her desk.< >
