In this article we present a generic, flexible and robust approach for an intelligent real-time video-surveillance system. The proposed system is a multi-camera platform that is able to handle different standards of video inputs (composite, IP, ieeE1394). The system implementation is distributed over a scalable computer cluster based on Linux and IP network. Data flows are transmitted between the different modules using multicast technology, video flows are compressed with the MPEG4 standard and the flow control is realized through a TCP-based command network (e.g. for bandwidth occupation control). The design of the architecture is optimized to display, compress, store and playback data and video flows in an efficient way. This platform also integrates advanced video analysis tools, such as motion detection, segmentation, tracking and neural networks modules. The goal of these advanced tools is to provide help to operators by detecting events of interest in visual scenes and store them with appropriate descriptions. This indexation process allows one to rapidly browse through huge amounts of stored surveillance data and play back only interesting sequences. We report here some preliminary results and we show the potential use of such a flexible system in third generation video surveillance system. We illustrate the interest of the system in a real case study, which is the surveillance of a reception desk.

The programming requirements of programmable logic controllers (PLC) have always been many and various. They are used by people from all kinds of different fields. Programming methods are expected to be application-oriented and geared towards controlengineering. Infoteam software demonstrates that the PLCopen portability level specification of instruction list (IL) enables even the portability of graphical languages like Ladder or FBD as well as the code generated from computeraidedsoftwareengineering (CASE) tools. This gives a far higher importance to PLCopen portability level standard that is visible at first. It is the prerequisite for reusing software in control automation.

To compete in today's global economy, an organization responsible for design and manufacturing of complex products must continually reduce concept-to-market time, improve product quality, and reduce overall cost. Dimensional management is both an engineering methodology and a set of computersoftwaretools that, if implemented correctly, is a proven process to help achieve these goals. Specifically, dimensional management provides the ability to dramatically improve the odds of manufacturing and assembling a product correctly "the first time" to meet customer expectations. Early in the design phase of a product, the dimensional management process provides rapid and simultaneous communication of numerous product and process changes to the entire design and build team. The outcome is significant reduction in the impact of assembly and manufacturing variation on the overall product requirements which in turn reduces concept-to-market time, improves quality, and reduces cost.

The computeraided Knowledge engineering (CAKE) project is creating a set of computer-based tools that aid in the construction of real-time expert systems - the primary application domain being the process and manufacturing industries. A principal aim of the project is to alleviate the often-cited 'knowledge-acquisition bottle-neck' by moving the knowledge engineering task away from a specialist knowledge engineer towards the domain expert. The tool introduced in this paper, T-CAKE, aids in the specification and construction of a temporal model of a plant and its associated expert system. The temporal model, expressed in the form of a Quirk model, provides the basis of the temporal verification which is subsequently carried out on the system and used to prove that a system will meet the timing constraints imposed upon it.

Automatic static and dynamic analysis tools were employed to test the software used for the Channel Tunnel which is equipped with a complex set of control and communications computer systems involving a large amount of software. Static and dynamic analysis are powerful softwareengineering techniques, which when implemented as part of a software development and test strategy, provide quantitative measurements of the quality of the code produced and the effectiveness of testing performed. Static analysis looks at the software source code to provide indications of its quality and suitability prior to any testing being performed. Dynamic analysis observes the efficiency of the tests applied and this can be observed at various stages of the lifecycle.

Lucas Aerospace has created a special proprietary language, called LUCOL, which it uses to develop the software for producing safety critical control systems for aerospace applications. Lucas Aerospace employs several tools to support the rigorous test coverage analysis requirements necessary to meet current standards, particularly RTCA DO-178B.
