Summary form only given. The ESPRIT project VIEWS (Visual Inspection and Evaluation of Wide-area Scenes) (project 2152) demonstrates computer vision systems for real-time surveillance of outdoor dynamic scenes in constrained situations. Two domains, viz. ground traffic at airports and road traffic have been selected for demonstration. For applications within these domains, inspection refers to a monitoring activity which provides a description of the scene in spatio-temporal terms, while evaluation refers to the higher-level activity of surveillance which produces conceptual descriptions of the scene of meaning to the end user. Both levels of description are derived primarily from image sequence data but other, nonvisual, data may also be input. The term wide-area refers not only to the spatial extent of the possible interactions but also to their number, for example a large network of roads or a junction in an urban area, or the whole or part of the airside of an airport.< >

A great deal of work when characterising printing materials and finished substrates coated with printing inks and toners utilises microscopic examination. Coates Electrographics is involved in a range of electronic printing related areas and image analysis provides a very useful tool in quality control and development for quantifying microscopic analysis. We have used an off the shelf Optomax V image Analyser with Insight frame grabbing capability combined with software provided by the supplier. This enables a number of very useful measurements and imageprocessing functions to be applied. The video image is captured from the microscope by a CCD camera which provides good resolution, high sensitivity and variable gamma. Some of the areas in which image analysis has been used to quantify properties of inks, toners and finished articles are listed.

computer vision techniques have been used to produce repeatable, quantitative measurements of wood fibres. These measurements have then been fed to a rule base which produces controlling actions to the refiner. The present system keeps the fibre quality in trim by altering the disc gap. The image analysis results from the planned experiment have shown that the same alterations in fibre properties can be made by adjusting the transport screw speed or the blow valve. A self-organising controller is envisaged which takes into account energy consumption, the amount of wear on and cost of replacement of the grinding discs, blow valve, and transport screw. Fibre quality is then kept in trim by altering all three variables in the most cost effective manner.

The National Engineering Laboratory has supported a programme of research and development in computer vision for over a decade. Activities undertaken within that time include the design of component recognition and location systems for robotic guidance and the establishment of an automated visual inspection cell for investigating industrial quality assurance problems. More recently the work has been extended to include projects on the application of transputer based parallel processing techniques within computer vision. Significant work is also carried out in the development of active stereo techniques for the derivation of three dimensional coordinate information. Several projects are reported which demonstrate the range of potential applications for computer vision, such as nuclear fuel subassembly dismantling and 3D facial imaging

The applications of images processing and computer vision in security and forensic science has been limited to image enhancement and image matching in a microscopic and laboratory techniques except for a few military application of imageprocessing in the remote sensing area. Security is the field in which computer vision is likely to play a major role in the prediction, prevention, detection and analysis of incidents. It is in this field in particular that there is a great need for dedicated artificial intelligence within computer vision capable of dealing with more complicated threats to security. This paper reports the application of several different parallel algorithms to detect and track moving objects in indoor and outdoor real-world scenes. The algorithms are coded in the OCCAM language and run in a transputer imageprocessing system(TIPS).

System simulation involves the construction of a computational analogue of a physical system - a process which has traditionally been associated with intemperate demands on processing time. Complex large-scale plant simulators and process mimics are almost commonplace in some high-technology industries. In such settings, simulation may be used in both the design and validation of novel control strategies, as well as forming part of an operator training programme, or in cause-consequence diagnostics.

The widespread use of computers in the future will make people more dependent on them with the growing importance of reliability and safety. The observed trend of processing power to become cheaper will make more feasible the implementation of reliable computers based on hardware redundancy techniques. It is desirable for a computer system required to keep a plant under continuous control to tolerate faults which appear during its operation. In this paper we describe our research in the properties of fully connected networks of 3 and 4 transputers with the aim of achieving enhanced reliability for real-time (RT) applications.
