The manipulation of objects by a robot within its workspace requires knowledge about each object's location and orientation. A 3D representation of the robot's workspace is thus required. This 3D representation would be built up from information obtained from various sensors within the workspace. In the paper the sensors used are robot mountable CCD Cameras. In the transputer based system developed, the process of extracting the information from the cameras is separated from the processes that use this information. This separation of information provider from information user enables the software that controls the cameras (and even the cameras themselves) to be upgraded with no corresponding changes to the information user software. Additional cameras can easily be added to the system while obsolete cameras and those with poor imaging characteristics can simply be removed.< >

Agriculture and the production of food are often seen as relatively low technology areas. In reality they represent some of the most challenging environments for the application of computer systems. This paper reports the development of a system for grading vegetables and fruit. Because the unit value of even high quality vegetables is low, they must be inspected at high speeds to make a machine commercially worthwhile. In this work an imageprocessing system was developed for grading potatoes at up to 2000 specimens per minute. The system is under the control of a Motorola 68000 processor which drives a specially designed data reduction unit operating directly on frames grabbed from the t.v. camera. The reduced data is routed to 4 further 68010 processors all of which are running concurrently. With the exception of the data reduction unit the system was designed around commercial processor cards communicating via a VME bus. This approach represents a practical solution to a real problem and the resulting system is now commercially available.

Continuous optimal defibration can only be achieved with plant automation. The difficulty is that no effective means of automatically measuring wood defibration exists. The paper describes an initial study of the application of a low-cost computer vision (CV) system to the wood defibration problem. The equipment consists of two independent pairs of regenerators, which are operated in counter-flow, continuous heat exchange mode. The cold inlet air for each pair comes from a temperature stabilized course at 20 degrees C and enters the regenerator (to be cooled) at the top. After leaving the regenerator, the now warm air is passed through a steam heat exchanger in series with a (1.6 kW) electrical heater which enables accurate control of the hot air inlet temperature to around 120 degrees C. Upon leaving the heater, the now hot air enters the second regenerator at the bottom, flows up the bed, heating the packing in the process, finally being exhausted into the atmosphere via a cooling jacket and rotameters. The four bed regenerators have been interfaced to an Apricot PCXI to provide a system, based on real time control and on line data processing, via a multi-function interface unit (MFIU) and a rig interface.< >
