Efficient spectrum planning requires models to account for the effects of the atmosphere and terrain on radio systems. One requirement is for statistical models based on as few, readily available, parameters as possible; these tend to be empirical or semi-empirical in nature. A second type of requirement is the modelling of the performance of a specific communication or radar system; real-time forecasts are of particular interest to military users. This requires more accurate propagation models and more detailed environmental information than the statistical approach. RAL have developed several numerical propagation models that account for the effects of the atmosphere and terrain on radio systems at frequencies from VHF to millimetric. Some of these are discussed. As well as being useful simulation and forecasting tools, the models have provided insight into the propagation mechanisms and can be a basis for improved statistical models.< >

Several geometric modelling methods are compared for use within real-time flight simulation systems. Algorithms are presented which give a rapid solution for simplified versions of the models. The algorithms are robust and are suitable for flight simulator applications. The aircraft geometric structure is modelled as connected cylinders and the range of motion and the position of the aircraft is quantised. The programs take account of geometric and obstacle constraints. Although the solutions are suboptimal due to the simplified models used, the calculation time is short. The static model of the aircraft environment is held in computer memory as solid polyhedra. This model may be updated as new objects enter or leave the area of the aircraft. Overlapping spheres are used to model flying objects or moving objects on the ground. In this form the model data can be accessed efficiently by flight planning algorithms. The approach is global and uses a 3D or 6D graph of quantised configuration space. The method can also be applied to the planning of automatic low-level flight path.< >

In the contracting business simulation plays an increasingly important role in tendering and project execution in the evaluation of alternatives and assessing the risks associated with solutions. The benefits and financial savings generated by simulation come from direct labour, capital investment, productivity improvements (and savings in) overheads and materials. Once armed with the knowledge of the benefits that may be achieved, the managers next step should be in quantifying what it will cost to generate a model that will produce adequate results on which to base a decision; this is done together with the systems modeller. A spreadsheet is used to calculate the duration of such a modelling task. Other aspects of managing a simulation model for contracting businesses are also presented.< >

To achieve a flexible AC transmission system (FACTS) requires the insertion of plant to control system voltage magnitude and phase. Most of this plant is electronic and depends upon properly coordinated control action. modelling is used to generate confidence and the type of modelling must reflect the principles to be demonstrated and plant characteristics. Here, the authors describe how modeling may take the form of digital computer models which are convenient to use but which ignore some operating conditions or physical models which, whilst not so convenient to use and which are more expensive to give a more detailed prediction of performance. Within these broad categories there is a range of models available which are identified.< >

The Design Information Research Team (DIRT) have undertaken a project funded by the UK Training Agency to create a multi-media AI and intelligent tutoring based simulation of being in command and control at a large fire incident. Knowledge acquisition for this project is supported by the Fire Brigade and West Midlands Fire Authority in particular. The system, ICCARUS (intelligent command and control-acquisition and review using simulation), is being designed as a multimedia environment in which 'realistic' concrete experience is gained of attending, commanding and controlling a major fire incident. The implementation of AI techniques, supported by a Mac IIx, transputers, various optical technology and the use of a sophisticated WIMPS interface allows the participating officer, as in 'real life', to become an information nexus; able to request and allocate resources within an audio/textual/visual environment, creating a real-time, event-based qualitative simulation, capable of realistically modelling the behaviour of both the fire and the decision making capabilities of the agents under the officer's control.< >

The accurate estimation of HF radio system performance requires knowledge of antenna gain at both transmitter and receiver. The best quality of service is achieved when the optimum antenna is used for the required area of reception location. However, the choice may also be constrained by cost and by the fact that every transmitting antenna is a potential source of interference to other transmissions. In the HF band there is serious congestion arising from both the wanted and unwanted signals; reliable and accurate modelling of antenna gain is thus required. The rapid developments in computer technology in the past 25 years have enabled this task to be addressed with increasing accuracy and efficiency. The CCIR (International Radio Consultative Committee) has taken a leading role in this work.< >

Coloured Petri nets (CPN) is a formalism which extends ordinary Petri nets by adding data types and modularity. This means that is possible to make succinct, readable and structured models. The CPN models may be investigated by means of simulation. However, the models may also be validated by a number of mathematical analysis techniques, such as state graphs and invariants. The modelling, simulation and analysis by means of CPN are supported by a set of commercially available computer tools called Design/CPN. CPN models have been used in a large range of different application areas, some of which are listed. Design/CPN uses the functional programming language Standard ML to specify data types, functions and data manipulations. 12 properties of CPN are presented.< >

Power supply equipment on the Edgware and High Barnet branches of London Underground Ltd.'s (LUL) Northern Line is now obsolete and life expired. It was decided to renew the equipment at some locations prior to the proposed Northern Line Modernisation Plan. It is widely recognised that the most effective way of assessing performance of different proposed options for the design of power systems is by means of computer simulation. The authors describe simulation studies undertaken by a London Underground internal design consultancy team to study different proposed options of AC and DC supply arrangements using a well established in-house simulator. The simulator used for this study is based on the Multi-train simulator and is capable of modelling the 22 kV/11 kV distribution network, substation converters, 630 V AC traction supply configuration and voltage sensitive, speed and load dependent train loads. It also takes account of interaction between all these subsystems.< >

Traditionally, high frequency (HF) communications have been difficult to manage efficiently, mainly due to the variable nature of the propagating conditions. An automatic radio control system (ARCS) consisting of automatic channel selection (ACS), automatic link establishment (ALE), and automatic link maintenance (ALM) will provide an automated system which will alleviate operator workload and improve communications availability at HF. Effective network management is fundamental to such a system. computer modelling and simulation is a powerful method for testing the suitability of parameter values and how they affect the operation of a communications systems. Various networks can be simulated highlighting the shortcomings and also the positive aspects of each configuration. This paper describes the current status and capabilities of a computer based ARCS network simulation designed to be used as an aid to developing the ARCS specification. It also presents some initial results.

The manner in which the software components are integrated into the knowledge-based modelling environment KEMS is referred to as 'medium coupling'. This is unlike 'loose coupling' which uses simple file transfers between modules, and 'tight coupling' which uses a single language for implementation. KEMS runs on PC 286 and 386 systems under MS DOS. An important reason for targetting onto these machines is the desire to make simulation tools available to a range of users at widely differing sites. The concepts within the prototype software are being evaluated using process models for gas distribution and control supplied by British Gas. The knowledge-acquisition front-end is being used to increase the model repertoire, and is itself being evaluated for use by engineers. Further knowledge-based tools which are to be added include an expert system adviser for simulation (to aid novice users), and model validation aids. The overall aim is to make complex modelling and simulation methodologies accessible to a much wider range of engineers and other users than is currently achievable.< >
