A general purpose Data Communication Simulator (DCS) has been built to model the physical behaviour of a complete transmission system for different line codes for copper twisted-pair and radio-mobile channels under the many possible parameters of the hardware modules. It features rapidity of configuration change, ease of use and the ability to concatenate a variety of transmission systems and codes to reflect a heterogeneous transmission network.< >

The application of parallel processing to mixed-mode systems is discussed. A simplified version of an important application area in personal communications is used to demonstrate that simple partitioning of the overall computer task can lead to speed-ups in the simulation run times from those achieved using single processor systems. In addition, it is argued that the parallel processing approach is highly suited to mixed-mode systems due to the straightforward mapping between different elements of the problem being studied and the computing hardware.< >

This paper is concerned with the serial data transmission of 9600 bit/sec over a HF radio link and the performance of a serial modem measured in terms of its error rate. Initially a model of a synchronous serial QAM digital data transmission system, which includes the model of the HF link, is presented suitable for computersimulation. A model of a near maximum likelihood detector, based upon the reduced state Viterbi algorithm, operating together with a predetection filter and an adaptive HF channel estimator, is described. computersimulations have been carried out to show the performance of the complete system (in terms of bit error rate), in the presence of intersymbol interference and additive white Gaussian noise. The modem is a digital signal processor performing computer-like operations on sets of numbers.< >

It is our contention that modern information technology should be applied to the teaching of undergraduate student laboratory classes, and that the application of the technology can learn from computer games. A number of computersimulations of laboratory experiments are being developed to this effect. Each experiment consists of a digitised video of the real experiment being conducted by an experienced technician, a graphical animation showing the internal workings of the apparatus, and an interactive graphical simulation with a mathematical model modelling the behaviour of the real equipment.< >

Summary form only given. Digital Image Processing is a rapidly evolving field with growing applications in science and engineering. The presentation addresses the fundamentals of major topics of digital image processing and computer vision i.e. image processing and computer vision taxonomy, typical problems (including their models and descriptions), application areas, hierarchical levels of image processing, some sample image processing algorithms, control methods of processing (preprocessing, iconic and symbolic processing), basic methods of parallel processing (local neighborhood operations, subimage/segment parallel processing and algorithm/operational functional parallelism), application requirements in real-time systems. The typical problems in image processing and computer vision applications are also described.< >

This paper reports on aspects of ongoing work to establish the potential of alternatives to rule-based traction control schemes. The paper is concerned primarily with the modelling and control of a brake intervention system. Control theory objectives have led to the development of a full nonlinear MATRIXx simulation model as the test bed to evaluate the performance of different control approaches.< >

Discrete event simulation provides a method of studying the behaviour of large systems by conducting experiments on a computer-based model rather than on the physical system itself. It is an important tool in the design of new systems such as industrial plants, road traffic networks or computer architectures, as it provides the designer with a way of modelling and analyzing the behaviour of such systems before their physical construction takes place. Traditionally, discrete event simulation has been performed in a sequential manner but the size and complexity of many of today's simulation models demand a move towards parallel execution.< >

To achieve a flexible AC transmission system (FACTS) requires the insertion of plant to control system voltage magnitude and phase. Most of this plant is electronic and depends upon properly coordinated control action. modelling is used to generate confidence and the type of modelling must reflect the principles to be demonstrated and plant characteristics. Here, the authors describe how modeling may take the form of digital computer models which are convenient to use but which ignore some operating conditions or physical models which, whilst not so convenient to use and which are more expensive to give a more detailed prediction of performance. Within these broad categories there is a range of models available which are identified.< >

Automation of any track transport system also means providing a traffic management system (TMS) that meets the needs of both passengers and the operating company. A TMS usually comprises a distributed interconnected network of computers, controlling and supervising the vehicle operations. Such applications often encompass multiple, co-operative software components that execute across a distributed target system. It is felt that object-orientation (OO) is especially well-suited to this problem domain. The initial thoughts and experiments of the authors on this subject are discussed. A comprehensive traffic management system may perform the following main functions: traffic supervision and regulation; schedule and routing management; and simulationmodelling.< >

The modelling of radarsystems is a complex process that has evolved over many years with the development of computer based technology. During this evolution some modelling techniques have been successful and others have failed. The author looks at what modelling frameworks are, why they are now being considered in the assessment of radarsystems, what benefits they offer, and the pitfalls that can occur if they are not managed or planned correctly. Based on this assessment a strategy is put forward for the implementation of modelling frameworks that should yield both short term modelling goals and long term economy in software development. In particular the author discusses the object oriented approach.< >
