A model to determine the detection performance of an integrated sensor suite was specified by the Defence Research Agency (DRA) Portsdown and produced by Logica Defence & Civil Government Ltd. The model interfaced with data arrays representing each sensor and provided performance measures for phased array radars and other active and passive sensors against specific target parameters, environmental conditions and electronic warfare activity. The model was written using object oriented software techniques in C++ to run on an IBM PC under Microsoft Windows. The results of model runs are displayed dynamically using a dynamic data exchange (DDE) link to an Excel spreadsheet. A map is displayed illustrating how the scenario evolves the time. The main benefits of using Windows are that the user can readily define what ships and aircraft are in the scenario and the equipment fitted. The platform's position, movement and equipment events are also specified as part of a consistent user interface.< >

Three-Dimensional Finite-Difference Time-Domain (3D FDTD) method has been successfully applied to structures such as Microstrip and waveguides to determine characteristics such as input impedance and scattering parameters. The FDTD method has also been applied to other applications such as the study of electromagnetic pulse (EMP) interaction with targets, radar cross section (RCS) calculations and to biological applications. One problem in modelling microstrip antennas is that these structures are highly resonant. The authors in this paper have described techniques to reduce this problem and have also given methods to improve accuracy and to reduce run-times. These methods include sub-gridding around discontinuities and parallel processing. The authors have carried out modelling on three computersystems (an HP400, A 486-based PC and a 386-based PC with a transputer array) and they conclude with their opinion that the 3D FDTD method is an efficient and accurate technique to model microstrip antennas.

The problems related to the design of a suitable radio access (RA) strategy are identified and explained. The formulation of a model, to examine the behaviour of circuit switched multiplexing protocols in conjunction with the chosen TDMA/TDM based RA technology, and its ability to carry a limited set of multi-rate voice, data and video traffic types, found in an urban business environment is described. A brief description is given of the evaluation technique. Process based event driven simulation, and the simulation tool developed.< >

It is nevertheless not convenient when it comes to the analysis of particular system properties. This talk exemplifies some of those properties and provides techniques to adequately specify, model and verify them.< >

Contracting is a complex decision process that involves the sifting and evaluation of masses of information, culminating in a set of contracts, each of which is a concise summary of: healthcare needs and outcomes; and the work-load for a lot of people over a long period of time. The author describes the use of Ep:Script knowledge base for planning evaluating and testing contracts. EpiScript is a clinically oriented computer language that can be used to describe, separately for each disease, the medical and resource related activities that take place during any healthcare treatment programme. EpiScript has well defined semantics and a sound type system. Its structure is such that parsing can ensure syntactic correctness. Most importantly, EpiScript is a process language.< >

Coloured Petri nets (CPN) is a formalism which extends ordinary Petri nets by adding data types and modularity. This means that is possible to make succinct, readable and structured models. The CPN models may be investigated by means of simulation. However, the models may also be validated by a number of mathematical analysis techniques, such as state graphs and invariants. The modelling, simulation and analysis by means of CPN are supported by a set of commercially available computer tools called Design/CPN. CPN models have been used in a large range of different application areas, some of which are listed. Design/CPN uses the functional programming language Standard ML to specify data types, functions and data manipulations. 12 properties of CPN are presented.< >

A major limitation of the transmission-line matrix (TLM) method used to solve Maxwell's equations is the long computation time required. The TLM scattering calculations involved can, however, be viewed as parallel in nature. This paper describes an effort to reduce computational time by using an SIMD, DAP multiprocessor computer employed to solve a two-dimensional TLM electromagnetic field formulation. A parallel algorithm based on the TLM scattering algorithm is designed and implemented using FORTRAN-PLUS Enhanced on an AMT DAP 510 machine. Here the connectivity of the DAP is exploited to simulate the intrinsic scattering behaviour on which the TLM algorithm relies. The results show that parallel processing on an SIMD machine such as the DAP is advantageous, especially for higher-order mesh sizes.

A modelling technique that relates concurrent system behaviour to agent interaction at a high level of abstraction is outlined. This exploits two complementary programming paradigms: agent-oriented and definition-based. The method is illustrated with reference to modelling and simulation of activity at a railway station.< >

The design of a large power distribution system has several problems not least of which is the problem of prototyping a large system cost-effectively. This leads to a greater emphasis on the use of CAD techniques for design proving. This in itself has pitfalls such as the excessive simulation times that would be required for large networks of primitive circuits which necessitates the use of behavioural modelling techniques. The author describes an approach to modelling such a system and presents some results of the simulations of such systems. The SABER simulator was chosen as it was the simulator in everyday use within the Power and Control group, and the libraries supplied as standard included all the models that were required to complete initial simulations of behavioural power supplies. The simulations required were transient and small signal AC analyses.< >

Jackson System Development is a method that has at its basis the assertion that any computer system is in reality a model of some portion of the real world. The Jackson method is a technical method that is limited to the software life cycle. The author discusses the modelling stage of the Jackson method which is concerned with depicting the subject matter of the system. He considers a case study of a radar training simulator.< >
