There are modelling techniques which may be used to assess the availability of either the software or the hardware of distributed computer systems. However, from the practical point of view, it would be more useful to assess the availability when the system is subjected to the combined effect of hardware and software faults either during its normal operating time or repair time. Such an availability modelling technique, for the class of distributed computer systems which are used for process control, is presented in this paper. To demonstrate the use of this technique the time function of the availability of a typical real-life distributed process control system is evaluated.

The colloquium whose papers are presented in this digest is one of a set of ten industrial seminars on the subject of formal methods being held throughout the European Union. Formal methods are mathematically based approaches to software and systems development which support the rigorous specification, design and verification of computer systems. Typical formal methods include VDM, Z, RAISE and LOTOS. They play a strong part in ensuring confidence in the functional correctness of phases of software development. Formal methods are particularly appropriate for use in high integrity and other systems where the cost of malfunction is high. They have recently been used in industrial applications in railway systems, radio oncology, engine control, computer operating systems and elsewhere.

Diagnostic system to determine the in-service life of dry vacuum pumps

A diagnostic system for dry pumps is proposed. It predicts future pump motor current fi om time-series in-situ measurements. The prediction system has been constructed using a data acquisition system with an online system identification software algorithm. A field test on a low pressure chemical vapour deposition (LPCVD) system for the silicon nitride process predicted large values of motor current, some of which correlated well with actual motel currents as the pump became clogged. The combined use of the predicted motor current and the stability criteria shows promise in predicting the actual service life of a dry pump.

The advent of technology for the manipulation of images by digital methods has generated interest in vision systems for the industrial environment to aid in the inspection of products. The role of such systems range from purely highlighting a particular aspect of the scene/object through to automatic assessment and control of selection mechanisms. In designing such industrial vision systems a number of different disciplines are involved, from the development of sensors to the formulation of image processing algorithms. This presentation is concerned with the image processing part of such a system;the hardware and software that is required to extract meaningful information from the image gathered by a sensor. Refs.

Information on a software package developed for use by students in a first course in control systems are presented. The flexibility provided by the package is found satisfactory for many industrial applications. Many users of control engineering software are not using the software continuously and therefore any approaches which make the software easier to use are particularly useful. Additional packages are developed to study such topics as simple aspects of nonlinear control, model reduction and PID controller design.

A system capable of utilizing a large range of sensor inputs for unsupervised control of complex production processes, while maintaining a high level of reliability, is considered. Cluster analysis techniques which have been developed are used to implicitly model the process and analyze the data. The use of clustering techniques for the identification of maintenance requirements on industrial machinery is a novel approach to a problem which normally utilizes very traditional methods. It is expected that the determination of the need for maintenance from automatically collected data rather than visual inspection will improve efficiency and aid reliability through a reduction in unexpected failure.

Recent research activity in the Electrical Engineering Department at the University of Manchester has given rise to the development of two hardware/software packages for the industrial application of advanced control systems. These packages are now available on a commercial basis. applications experience has now been gained on a number of plants in a variety of industries. These applications have ranged from simple data analysis/model building exercises through to the implementation of multiple advanced control systems compensating for time delay, disturbance and interaction.

Awareness of the capabilities of machine vision is increasing. This has brought about a demand for systems of increasing power and flexibility to meet the growing range of applications. systems that rely on software processing only, even using the most powerful microprocessors, such as the 68000, are sometimes unable to meet the task. Recent developments in the machine vision industry have resulted in a number of novel hardware architectures designed to meet this demand. Practical, cost effective implementation of these ideas is made possible because of the density of modern memory and integrated devices. This paper discusses the range of hardware architectures for image processing applications.
