The concept of interchangeable parts made possible the mass production industries of today, bringing the cost of manufactured goods down by orders of magnitude, with consequent effects; we have come to regard as the industrial revolution. So far this paradigm has not been widely applied in the software field. object oriented programming promises the advantages of interchangeable parts. Many of the necessary preconditions for the economically viable development of reusable software have now been met. Much remains to be done, however, to release this potential. The author examines reusability from different viewpoints: domains (analysis, design, prototyping, implementation, verification, maintenance and reuse); levels (systems, sub-systems, lightweight-processes); areas (user interfacing, storage structures, databases, and distributed systems); people; and financial and administrative.< >

The Common object Request Broker Architecture (CORBA) is an important standard for distributed object oriented systems. It is defined by the object Management Group (OMG)-an open consortium of 300 companies and institutions. Its aim is to provide support for the use and management of objects in a distributed system of heterogeneous machines and operating systems. These objects can be the components of a distributed application; or they could be applications themselves which provide a CORBA interface to allow usage by client programs on the same or on different machines in the network. The Orbix system is an implementation of the CORBA standard, with a C++ language binding-allowing programmers to write distributed applications using C++.< >

The paper provides justification for the need of business analysis as a distinct stage during the IS development process. A modelling methodology in order to be capable of modelling the business analysis stage should be able to provide sufficient level of abstraction and business analysis specific concepts that represent the organisation independent of any design or implementation issues. The spiral model in OO software development is preferred to the waterfall model since during the OO software development process the boundary that distinguishes OOA from OOD is not very easily identified and a lot of iterations are required before a certain stage is completed. There also exists a lot of similarity in the modelling concepts used in business analysis in IS development and OOA in OO software development. As a consequence the paper suggests the use of business analysis as a replacement of OOA in OO IS development.< >

Describes the development of a graphical user interface for the ELLA hardware design system. The interface, called ELLAVIEW, was constructed using object-oriented design methods, objective-C and the ICpak201 graphics toolkit. ELLAVIEW was developed by Praxis to add a more up-to-date user interface to ELLA. Direct manipulation techniques, menus, and graphical feedback are used to provide a more productive environment for hardware designers. The interface is object-oriented. The user points at objects on the screen and then selects an operation to perform. The desk top metaphor to enable the hardware designer to get full information about the database contents. The paper describes the results of the development work and draws conclusion on the use of object-oriented techniques for design and implementation.< >

There is a critical awareness in industry that logic-based and rule-based expert systems are not going to be adequate for the type of complex tasks that typically arise in a wide variety of engineering applications. The main-problem is a lack of standardization concerning parallel implementation of logic programs and rule-based systems. These findings question whether full-scale industrial implementations of intelligent systems should be in these forms. There is consequently a search for alternative symbolic paradigms. The authors have adopted the paradigm of object-orientation in the design, development and implementation of a hardware diagnostic system to demonstrate the potential application of object-oriented expert systems (OBOESs) to a wide variety of industrial problems. One attractive feature of an OBOES is the idea that parallel implementation via distributed object systems becomes feasible.< >

The design and implementation of VSM, (virtual stack machine) a programming system for generating and interpreting code for von-Neumann machines, is described. C++ was chosen as implementation language because it permits the use of the built-in operators of a high level language for user defined new data types. Furthermore it supports the object oriented way of programming, e.g. the principles of abstract data types and polymorphism. Examples of programs generating code and simulating a machine are presented in order to show the efficiency of using C++ combined with a well designed class library. The examples are related to the VLSI netlist logic design rule check. Also, some techniques are demonstrated to take advantage of inheritance, virtual functions and operator overloading that go beyond the scope of the current C++ language definition.< >

Describes the design and implementation of a hierarchical control system for flexible assembly cells. The system is innovative for two reasons: it is implemented using object-oriented programming (OOP) techniques and it uses a product-centred control strategy. conventional robot control systems are either equipment oriented, where programs are sequences of commands to robots and grippers, or task based, in which the program represents a sequence of parameterised processes. The focus of attention is the product being assembled. it is argued that this leads to a simpler, more flexible and more intelligent control system. Finally, a prototype system implemented in KEF, an AI toolkit, on a symbolics Lisp machine is described.< >

A brief account of experiences in using an implementation of PCTE is given. Particular reference is paid to the PCTE OMS (object management system). A description of the circumstances which led to the use of a PCTE implementation is provided. The author looks at experiences with and opinions of the various aspects of the OMS, including comments on the ease of use, comparisons with corresponding facilities offered by other systems (especially Unix), relevance to user requirements, and the differences, if any, that might be expected in an implementation of PCTE+. A description of the use of the system as a whole, with particular reference to the improvements in the PCTE+ OMS, is also given.< >

HyperNeWS is a powerful tool for designing user interfaces, developed at the Turing Institute. It runs on Sun3 and Sun4 workstations, using either the X11/NeWS server, or NeWS server. It is somewhat like the Macintosh HyperCard system in its screen organisation, with windows (or stacks) composed of backgrounds and cards. Each background/card/stack can contain a variety of objects, such as buttons, sliders, dials etc. The implementation language is Postscript. objects scripts are written directly in Postscript, and HyperNeWS can be used for interesting applications without involving anything but the server. All communication is message-based, where using an object oriented design, if an object cannot handle a given message, it is passed to its parent. HyperNeWs can communicate with external clients. This interface has been developed in C, is type-secure and allows each stack to communicate with a separate client. Interfaces to other languages, such as Prolog and Lisp, are built on top of the C interface. Some of the features that HyperNeWS provides are: simple to use, reusable and good error handling.< >
