GAMBITS (Graphical Approach to Modelling and Building Interactively a Technical System) has evolved to fill the gaps in other methods by providing support for (1) the progressive realisation and the traceability of functional and non-functional requirements from initial conception, through implementation to maintenance; (2) the human involvement in the system, from the procurer, developer and user perspectives; and (3) support for building embedded, real-time and large distributed systems. The GAMBITS method permits successive refinement of understanding from emerging needs, through progressive transformations of an implementation-independent specification, to partial or full realisation of a local or distributed system. Starting with a business objective, the method allows the representation of concepts at different development stages or lifecycle steps. The method permits substantial verification of an implementation through traceability links that can map each component of requirement to the design and the subsequent implementation in a procedural or object-oriented application.

This paper describes the progress and interim findings of research at the MSI Research Institute at Loughborough University concerned with: consolidating and developing modelling methods and tools, which support the design and implementation of integrated systems; and identifying requirements for modelling 'resources', to support the engineering of manufacturing enterprises. The research is funded jointly by the CDP committee of EPSRC and UK industry and is being advanced in conjunction with a consortium of manufacturing user organisations and their software and system suppliers.

In VLSI design there are a large number of possible sources of technology and process dependence. Even within a single technology, there are significant process variations between different fabrication plants. It is, therefore, particularly difficult to produce VLSI designs which can easily be used with different processes, let alone different technologies. There are even problems associated with producing a design system which is process independent, with many fabrication companies producing design systems which can be used only with their process-and general design systems which use a 'least common denominator' of process capabilities. CSL (circuit specification language), is an object-oriented language which has been designed, in part, to overcome these difficulties.< >

Over the last few years, object oriented programming has emerged as the new programming paradigm for the future, promising rewards in all areas of software development. Its use in commercial environments has been limited somewhat however, by the inertia of industry to adapt to a new way of thinking about software. Its main use has until recently, been in the academic environment for purposes of research. Recently, many object oriented extensions have been added to popular programming languages such as C and Pascal, making them more accessible and more prominent. As the awareness and popularity of object oriented programming increases, the variety of application area does likewise. The authors describe how the techniques of object oriented programming can be used to create reusable, extensible, modular code in the VLSI routing domain to create a generic routing framework. They focus on the design philosophy and the benefits and drawbacks of the object oriented approach.< >

The IDAS project investigates the design and development of an Intelligent Documentation Advisory System (IDAS). The aim is to develop intelligent on-line technical documentation presented via hypertext and natural language generation and constructed dynamically by expert systems technology using object-oriented techniques. The IDAS being designed is targeted at users of an Automatic Test Equipment (ATE) system and aims to replace part of the current paper-based documentation. The IDAS will represent the ATE using a qualitative model at a level close to linguistic realisation and implemented in an object-oriented framework. It will then present material to the user via a hypertext interface. It is hoped to improve on standard hypertext systems, by giving responses which take account of the user's problems, skills and privilege. They are progressing towards a prototype implementation using the expert system shell Egeria.< >

There exists a need for diagnostic monitoring systems to ensure safer operation of process plants. Although acquisition of plant knowledge for such systems would prove expensive and time-consuming using traditional techniques, we feel this could be significantly reduced by extracting the information directly from the data held in the CAD models used in plant design. Any additional knowledge requirement could be obtained using conventional expert/knowledge engineering techniques. Not only could this information be utilised for diagnosis, but, by use of object-oriented techniques, the same knowledge could be used to perform functions including the provision of an intelligent CAI system for operator training. The goal of our project is to investigate the link between the design model and the knowledge base, proving that the technique is feasible, and evaluating its worth. We have constructed a simple demonstration system to illustrate the automated knowledge acquisition technique, and this is able to build the plant-specific portion of a frame-based knowledge base from computer-aided process design (CAPD) files, for use in a diagnostic fault-finding system.

There is some consensus on the set of techniques and mechanisms which should be used to construct distributed systems. However, none of these mechanisms help in the design process of decomposing an overall application into a set of components nor in its subsequent construction. They are rather the 'glue' used to compose components such that they may communicate and interact. What is missing is any motion of structure. The premise of the author's approach is that a separate, explicit structural (configuration) description is essential for all phases in the software development process for distributed systems, from system specification as a configuration of component specifications to evolution as changes to a system configuration. Descriptions of the constituent software components and their interconnection patterns provide a clear and concise level at which to specify and design systems, and can be used directly by construction tools to generate the system itself. The author uses the neutral term 'component' to mean a software entity which encapsulates some resources and provides a well defined interface in terms of the operations it provides to access the resources and the operations it requires to implement its functionality. Further, these components must be 'context independent' in that they use only local names to communicate with their environment, thereby allowing them to be developed independently of the context in which they execute.< >

Simulation has proven to be a highly effective means of testing the operation of systems during development, and prior to in-service modification, but it is not as widely used in industry as might be expected. The prime reason for this is that model development for simulation often requires the combination of deep knowledge of the process and specialised modelling skills. One solution to this problem is the provision of a library of re-useable sub-models, which can facilitate development of hierarchically structured models. This paper illustrates the application of object-oriented methodology to achieving two major goals-the reduction of complexity by hierarchical decomposition, and maximisation of the re-use of developed models. Two applications are discussed-the generation of hierarchical models and the use of function blocks in control system design-with respect to the three dominant OO concepts of encapsulation, inheritance and polymorphism. It outlines requirements for a modelling and control tool and highlights how an OO methodology can help simplify the use of such a tool. OO implementations of modelling and control tools are described. The tools described were implemented using compiled OO languages (Pascal and C++), with the consequence that the user of she tool does not get all the advantages which would occur in an interpretive environment such as Smalltalk.< >

Model-based object-oriented systems Engineering (MOOSE) is a full-lifecycle computer systems engineering method intended for the development of products that make use of application-specific embedded and distributed computer systems. The method is divided into a number of phases that effect a series of transformations leading to an implementation, and it is supported by a product engineer's workbench that supports the capture, translation and execution of the model. Phase 1 is concerned with the production of a product architecture, which consists of a structured set of requirements, a system domain model and a model showing the system's behaviour and structure. In phase 2, the behavioural model is augmented with information that allows the model to be executed. The resulting executable model can be used to validate the system's logical behaviour and to investigate logical timing issues. In phase 3, actual commitments to implementation are made by transforming the executable model according to the constraints imposed by non-functional requirements. Phase 3a is primarily concerned with committing the objects in the executable model to specific implementation technologies and assigning software objects to processors (the result is a 'committed model'). Phase 3b is concerned with adding 'functionally neutral' objects that are necessary in order for a computer system to execute. The activity centres on transformations applied to a 'platform model' that is initially formed by automatic translation of the committed model and which contains all the hardware objects and the software interfaces into the hardware.
