One problem facing the industrial automation industry is the shorter product life cycles than the life expectancy of an automated facility. This means that financially justifying the investment in an automated production line can no longer be performed on a single product. Hence, the system supplied must be capable of fast reconfiguration in order to produce a range of products during their working life. This paper shows that the use of DeviceNet fieldbus technology can greatly improve the speed and flexibility of making changes to an automated control system. Its use also impacts on the ease of maintenance of the system as well as giving the capability for greatly improve diagnostics. Using network management software to contain all of the complexity of the installation also improves the system documentation as it is performed automatically with any changes that are made to the system.

The objective of this work was the development of a replacement control system for a SCARA robot. The key features explored were derived from the scalable distributed architecture in which each joint was served by its own dedicated microcontroller. The software system exploited this with a novel resident kernel enabling dynamic reconfiguration through run time changes to executable code.

A vital element of any biscuit making line is the biscuit roller, which forms the actual biscuit shape in dough prior to the baking process. The design of a biscuit molding roller is a highly skilled task, and requires a number of factors to be considered. Spooner-Vicars has been manufacturing engraved biscuit rollers for many decades, using traditional engineering practices. This paper discusses a case study within the company and relates to the application of the reconfiguration of existing manufacturing systems during the implementation of a manufacturing strategy.

Product life cycles are now far shorter than the life expectancy of an automated facility, so financially justifying investment in an automated production line can no longer be performed on a single product. This may involve making variants of a single product, or increasingly making completely dissimilar products. In order to reconfigure lines in this way there are a number of issues to be addressed. This paper focuses on the issue of rewiring the control system. The use ofthe DeviceNet fieldbus technology can greatly improve the speed and flexibility of making changes to an automated control system. Its use also impacts on the ease of maintenance of the system as well as giving the capability for greatly improved diagnostics. Using network management software to contain all of the complexity of the installation, rather than it being contained in the wiring harness, also improves the system documentation as it is performed automatically with any changes that are made to the system.
