The nature of several algorithms from the active vibration control domain is discussed and the issues of algorithm parallelisation and mapping are introduced. The algorithms have been implemented on the network of C40s and the real-time performance evaluated. In all the cases, a single C40 has shown enough processing power for the real-time implementation of the algorithms. Multiprocessor implementation did not offer very impressive performances as compared to ideal speedup, due to communication overhead, run-time memory management and some other unpredictable features of the architecture. However, the obtained real time performances of the uni-processor and the multi-processor architectures are quite reasonable.< >

The principal constituents of soft computing are the fuzzy logic (FL), artificial neural networks (NN) and probabilistic reasoning (PR). It is generally regarded that FL primarily deals with imprecision, NN with learning, and PR with uncertainty. They have, however, overlapping boundaries and are known to be complementary rather than competitive to each other in many applications. Here, two control algorithms, one implemented by fuzzy logic and the other by a neural network, are used as the basis to highlight salient features of soft computing. A DC motor servo system with the proposed soft computing based algorithms is discussed. The fuzzy logic control employs the principles of fuzzy logic to calculate an optimal output action based on input conditions, and a knowledge base expressed in linguistic forms, thereby performing a parallel operation to control the output with a high degree of robustness against parameter change. In the neural network control, focus is on how neural networks can overcome deadzone-plus-saturation nonlinearity commonly found in the power driver of a DC servo motor. Simulation results have been performed to establish the validity of these control algorithms.< >

This paper describes the development of actuators based on the giant magnetostrictive material Terfenol-D, including a novel mechanically self-biasing actuator. The range of applications open to these actuators such as linear micropositioning and active vibration control are discussed with appropriate case studies. Specialised control strategies and algorithms are described based on digital variable structure control principles to compensate for the material's nonlinear behaviour characteristics, i.e. hysterectic, static and dynamic load dependency. Implementation on the appropriate microcontroller are given with the case studies.

This paper reports on a research project which is developing algorithms and architectures for a control system processor (CSP). The design considerations given suggest how new processor architectures targeted generally for critical linear time invariant systems can be arranged to yield higher performance controllers than those designed in the classical fashion. This is based on the structuring of the complexity of the digital controllers and an assessment of their associated implementational and computational demands. An active suspension controller is used as an example to illustrate some of the issues. The problem of an optimal realization of digital controllers taking into account finite wordlength issues is investigated within the framework of the delta ( delta ) operator formulation, which provides improved numerical capabilities with high sampling rate, fixed point computations and improved I/O requirements.< >

This paper addresses the problem of designing guidance, navigation and control systems for Autonomous Unmanned-Underwater Vehicles (AUVs) to achieve accurate tracking of reference paths defined in a universal reference frame. The theoretical framework adopted is illustrated with a design example in which recent developments in multivariable control theory and classical results in navigation and guidance were applied to the design of a trajectory following system for the AUV MARIUS (Marine Utility Vehicle System). The key ideas in the design methodology are to clearly state performance specifications in the frequency domain and to use design tools that explicitly address these types of specifications. Thus, the natural constraint that the navigation, control and guidance systems have decreasing bandwidths, can be directly incorporated in the initial phase of the project. Analysis of the integrated system is performed using a simulation package that allows the user to assess the impact of the navigation. Guidance, and control algorithms on the dynamic behaviour of the vehicle.< >

A number of techniques are available for improving reliability and avoiding unplanned maintenance in rail vehicle traction and braking systems. In this paper, the most relevant techniques, from classical monitoring to the more recent model-based methods, are reviewed. Although available for some years, many of the classical methods are often not used because of the added instrumentation cost. With increasingly tighter slip and slide control requirements, more sophisticated control strategies, many of which make use of state variable observers, are being used. As a result, the use of modern fault detection algorithms are enabled at little extra cost. Possibilities for observer design for fault tolerant control in the face of sensor failures are also explored.

A beamformer is a processor used in conjunction with an array of sensors to provide a versatile form of spatial filtering. The sensor array collects spatial samples of propagating wave fields, which are processed by the beamformer. The objective is to estimate the signal arriving from a desired direction in the presence of noise and interfering signals. Generally, the beamformer design is severely hampered by noise and surrounding interference environment. Several beamformer algorithms were proposed in the literature in the fields of radar, sonar and communication systems. One of the simple array systems, widely employed for interference suppression, was introduced by Frost (1972). The weight adjustment in the Frost array is computed by the popular adaptive least mean square (LMS) algorithm. The LMS algorithm is a member of the stochastic gradient class of the algorithms, climbing down the mean-square error contour in the direction of the negative gradient. It is well known that the convergence performance of this algorithm is highly related to the eigenvalue spread of the autocorrelation matrix of the array input data. As a result, the Frost array also suffers from the same drawback. In this research, we are concerned with the development of suitable algorithms to improve the performance of the Frost array.< >

Power system control entails maintaining a continuous balance between electrical generation and a varying load demand, while system frequency, voltage levels and network security are preserved. However, the system can be highly complex and nonlinear, and fixed parameter controllers be unable to provide the most effective control. Adaptive control can offer a solution to such problems. It requires supervision strategies, or the addition of jacketing software to improve robustness. The protection scheme is essentially a logical network, composed of a considerable amount of heuristics and rules of thumb. Subsequent testing, evaluation and debugging can be cumbersome. A more elegant approach separates the jacketing software from the identification and control algorithms, leaving an expert system to perform all supervisory functions. This approach is adopted. CLIPS (C Language Integrated Production System) was selected as an example of a real-time expert shell. It is entirely written in the C. This simplifies integration with conventional software, and as the entire source code is provided, programmers can write their own routines to be called by CLIPS, or CLIPS itself can be embedded as a routine in another program.

The development of intelligent systems has created a need for reliable development techniques and algorithms for artificial neural networks (ANN) and fuzzy control techniques. The Neural Network Toolbox (now at v2.00) provides the first steps toward development of solutions that implement this technology. The output from the software is presented in easily understood graphical and numerical formats and the interactive MATLAB environment enables more creative thinking to be applied to problems. The developer is however faced with the problem of transferring work from MATLAB onto suitable hardware where further research and practical implementation may be conducted. This work seeks to use techniques which other aspects of engineering have used successfully to transfer information onto hardware for practical use. Current work at Lancaster involved with development of ANN architectures and control solutions also involves the use of hardware from Neural technologies, in particular the nt6000 system. Network design using standard back propagation designs is also carried out using MATLAB and the NN toolbox. The work discussed in this presentation shows how techniques were developed to allow the direct transfer of code from MATLAB to this hardware.
