The development of intelligent systems has created a need for reliable development techniques and algorithms for artificial neural networks (ANN) and fuzzy control techniques. The Neural Network Toolbox (now at v2.00) provides the first steps toward development of solutions that implement this technology. The output from the software is presented in easily understood graphical and numerical formats and the interactive MATLAB environment enables more creative thinking to be applied to problems. The developer is however faced with the problem of transferring work from MATLAB onto suitable hardware where further research and practical implementation may be conducted. This work seeks to use techniques which other aspects of engineering have used successfully to transfer information onto hardware for practical use. Current work at Lancaster involved with development of ANN architectures and control solutions also involves the use of hardware from Neural technologies, in particular the nt6000 system. Network design using standard back propagation designs is also carried out using MATLAB and the NN toolbox. The work discussed in this presentation shows how techniques were developed to allow the direct transfer of code from MATLAB to this hardware.

geneticalgorithms are of great importance in the development of new generation of IT applications. The potential of which Parallel geneticalgorithms over existing information processing techniques is enormous. geneticalgorithms are ideally suited to the processing, classification and control of very large and varied data. Programming systems used for the implementation of these algorithms are grouped into three classes: application-oriented systems, algorithm oriented systems and general programming systems.

The paper describes the implementation of algorithms which attempt to provide optimization techniques for logic circuits and field programmable gate arrays (FPGAs). These geneticalgorithms are used to select, breed and test potential solutions to these networks and recommend the nearest optimal solution. In practice, recommended solutions causes considerable savings on circuit implementations as experimental results show and demonstrate.

An alternative approach to routing table optimization based on combining a genetic algorithm with Sinclair's analysis method is presented. First, the network model used is described, as well as both the underlying analysis method and the earlier heuristic optimization methods. Then, the basic principles of geneticalgorithms and the details of the particular genetic algorithm used are described. It was indicated that despite the early promise of geneticalgorithms as a highly suitable means for this type of optimization problem, they have yet to fulfill that promise. Sinclairs heuristic optimization algorithm, at least for the example network examined, would appear to be far superior. Nonetheless, there remains some unexplored possibilities.

This paper describes the development of an object-oriented parallel programming environment for geneticalgorithms. This work, carried out as part of the ESPRIT III initiative PAPAGENA, intends to promote, develop and demonstrate the effectiveness of genetic algorithm (GA) and parallel genetic algorithm (PGA) techniques in a variety of real-world application domains. Central to this task is the development of a general-purpose programming environment for both parallel and sequential geneticalgorithms. GAME (genetic Algorithm Manipulation Environment) will offer extensive tools for the design, configuration and monitoring of GA applications. This paper gives an overview of the design philosophy behind GAME, indicating the types of service and facilities the finished product will offer. Intrinsic to the design is the provision of an extensive multi-levelled GA-specific library, offering GA and PGA applications, algorithms and operators. This will allow application developers the facilities to rapidly customise, configure and test novel GA and PGA designs. To sketch the types of application to be housed in GAME, a description of the applications currently under development within this project is also included. These range from finance through economic modelling to protein structure prediction. Key design requirements for GAME are versatility, together with flexibility. For this reason GAME has been designed to run within both Sun OS and PC DOS operating system, with or without parallel support.

The use of model-based approaches is proposed to improve the control performance of an industrial polymerization reactor. This involves the development of a process model using system identification techniques, the simulation of the plant within the Simulink environment to allow for the design and validation of control strategies. From these studies a Smith Predictor was implemented to significantly improve the polymer viscosity control. A hardware platform is developed to facilitate the implementation of sophisticated algorithms such as recursive least squares, that could not be accommodated on the existing DCS.

geneticalgorithms in general, and parallel geneticalgorithms in particular, are of major significance to the development of the new generation of IT applications. The potential which parallel geneticalgorithms offer over existing information processing techniques is enormous. geneticalgorithms are ideally suited to the processing, classification and control of very-large and varied data. There are a growing number of programming systems for implementation of geneticalgorithms. They can be grouped in three major classes: application-oriented, algorithm-oriented and general programming systems. This paper briefly describes these three classes.< >
