Evolutionary algorithms (EAs) are based on the underlying genetic process in biological organisms and on the natural evolution populations. Recently, EAs have found many potential applications in economical operation and control of power systems. However, when applying EAs to large scale system optimization problems, there is still a preeminent problem, the premature convergence problem, which degrade the EAs' performance. This paper presents an overview of the recent important techniques emerging in EAs' community with potential applications in power systems domains. These techniques covers both practical and theoretical considerations in self-adaptation and handling constraints. It is desired that they are helpful to the construction of some more efficient, robust EAs to solve a broader range of problems types in power systems.

An adaptive sliding-mode controller based on real-time geneticalgorithms (GAs) is developed for an induction motor (IM) servo drive. First, an adaptive sliding-mode controller with an integral-operation switching surface is investigated, in which a simple adaptive algorithm is utilised to estimate the bound of uncertainties. Since the adaptation parameters for the above adaptive algorithm are constants, favorable response usually cannot be obtained due to the existence of uncertainties. Therefore, a real-time GA is developed to search the optimal adaptation parameters on-line. The position control for an IM servo drive using the proposed control strategy is illustrated. Simulated and experimental results show that the proposed controller provides high-performance dynamic characteristics and is robust with regard to plant parameter variations and external load disturbance.

In support of the Governments 10 Year Transport Plan the Highways Agency has an ambitious programme to roll-out traffic systems on the English motorway network. The control methodologies within these systems can be further developed which will help meet the Government's targets to reduce congestion and accidents. This paper describes three innovative projects being undertaken by the Highways Agency. The approach to these projects departs from the traditional engineering approach instead we have used mathematical techniques to evolve control functions that learn and operate on the available traffic data.
This survey covers the broad area of evolutionary computation applications to optimization, model identification, and control in power systems. Due to space limitation, all reviewed papers have been selected since 199...

This paper presents a study on the design procedure for a Fuzzy Logic based Power System Stabilizer (FLPSS) and investigates its robustness for a multi machines power system. A four-machine and two-area power system is used as a case study. Computer simulations using this system, which is subjected to a three phase fault, were carried out. The parameters of the membership functions of the fuzzy controller were tuned using a steady state GA breeding technique. Results showed that the GA-tuned FLPSS was more effective than a conventional lead-lag power system stabilizer in term of damping properties.
In this paper, we propose a genetic algorithm based design procedure for a radial-basis function neural network. A hierarchical rank density genetic algorithm (HRDGA) is used to evolve both the neural network's to...

The necessity for flexible electric systems, changing regulatory and economic scenarios, energy savings and environmental impact are providing impetus to the development of Distributed Generation (DG), which is predicted to play an increasing role in the electric power system of the future. With so much new distributed generation being installed, it is critical that the power system impacts be assessed accurately so that DG can be applied in a manner that avoids causing degradation of power quality, reliability and control of the utility system. For these reasons, the paper proposes a new software procedure, based on a genetic Algorithm, capable to establish the optimal distributed generation allocation on an existing MV distribution network, considering all the technical constraints, like feeder capacity limits, feeder voltage profile and three-phase short circuit current in the network nodes.
