Implementing a process model using fuzzy methods has proved successful when considering the steady state determined models based controller algorithm of Davison, and has given a much improved performance when compared to a design based on average process gains only. With the addition of dynamic response and process dead time compensation inherent in the self organising process at the highest level it is then possible to provide a direct and straightforward approach to tuning and adaptation of model based control algorithms.< >

There is considerable commercial interest in the development of self-tuning controllers that are capable of reducing commissioning costs, improving the performance of 'difficult' loops, or adapting to long-term changes in the operating conditions of HVAC systems. Self-tuners that use a linear model to represent the behaviour of the plant have particular difficulty dealing with the highly nonlinear behaviour of most HVAC systems. Actuator non-linearities, changes in the mode of operation of the plant and the constraints imposed by cascaded inner loops, cause particular problems. Self-tuners are capable of adapting to slow, long-term changes in the behaviour of the plant but additional steps must be taken to compensate for severe input non-linearities. The performance of the PID algorithm itself may be unsatisfactory if the control loop involves a large number of cascade lags or where transport delays are significant. In these situations, self-tuning predictive control algorithms that can deal with unknown and time-varying time delays will be needed. The flexibility of the rule-based self-tuning PID controllers should allow them to cope with most of the practical difficulties, though, in practice, it is always difficult to ensure that their rules are complete and consistent.

The genetic algorithm, loosely based on the mechanics of evolution, is used in machine learning and optimisation problems that typically have a large search space and require a high tolerance to noise. Two examples are given of its use in the learning of rules for real-time control problems; one for adaptive rule-based optimisation of combustion in multiple-burner installations in the steel industry and the other for controlling a dynamical system. Current research on genetic algorithms is largely focussing on their use for optimising neural networks, since this is a natural way of combining the paradigms of evolution and learning, and on parallel and distributed implementations, to facilitate the efficient solution of larger problems. A project using a parallel implementation of an incremental genetic algorithm to generate constraint networks from raw data is described.< >

Various approaches to the design of self-tuners for application in HVAC systems have been proposed. Designs fall into two main categories: model-based algorithms in which the parameters of the PID controller are related to the parameters of a transfer-function model of the plant, the parameters of the model being determined in open or closed loop from step tests or estimated using a recursive parameter estimator; and empirical rule-based algorithms in which the parameters of the PID controller are determined by a set of heuristic rules. Examples of each are examined, and it is shown that good design and implementation of the supervisor is essential if self-tuning controllers are to be applied successfully to HVAC systems. The selection of suitable control loops should take account of what prior knowledge is available, and plant must be designed and commissioned properly if the advantages of self-tuning control are to be realised in practice.< >

The adoption of direct digital control (DDC) methods in building energy management systems (BEMS) has become the widely-accepted norm for the control of building services systems. Energy savings have been achieved, but these are often the result of the consequential features offered by a BEMS-data logging, information retrieval/presentation, and simple trend plotting. These have given building operators a deeper insight into the behaviour of the building/plant/climate system than was ever before possible with the analogue control methods, and it is often this which has led to more energy-efficient system performance. There has been little change as regards the control laws utilised, however; the majority of current BEMS simply apply, in digital form, the well-known PID control method which had its origins over fifty years ago. Other fields, such as the aerospace industry and process control, have seen the successful implementation of more advanced techniques: these include optimal, robust, stochastic and predictive control. As yet, such advanced methods have not been used for practical building services control. This paper presents the results of a preliminary investigation into the use of a stochastic predictive strategy for the control of the internal air temperature of a test cell.< >

It has been recongnized some years ago that costs of running the water supply systems can be significantly reduced if, e.g. pump schedules, valve positions, treatment plant operation or controlled flow rates are chosen appropriately to make use of system reservoir storages and time-varying electricity tariff. Suitable information feedback mechanisms from a system to a control computer can be applied in order to overcome incomplete knowledge of system structure its certain parameters and inputs, e.g. water demands. Available computing power enabled implementation of advanced optimizing control algorithms based on solving difficult optimization problems in online mode.< >

Robot techniques appear to have made little impact on applications areas involving part assembly. This is mainly due to a lack of flexibility and consequent problems of cost justification, particularly where there are multiple products and short production runs. Ways of increasing flexibility include the reduction of fixturing by using more than one robot on an assembly task, the provision of enhanced sensing capabilities by using multiple sensors, and the use of the sensory system to provide information for an error correction and detection facility. A complex system with these facilities places particular emphasis on the requirement to integrate a set of subsystems. This integration is difficult to achieve using conventional methods of computer control. To overcome these problems a vertically integrated architecture has been developed in which the integration concepts are carried through from the algorithms to a parallel processing implementation. The approach is based upon the asynchronous coordinated action of many agents and gives rise to the concept of a societal architecture-a society of agents. The structure of the agents and the manner in which information is passed between them is heavily influenced by the need to support a large number of simple agents and by the need to achieve real time operation. This latter can be achieved by an architecture, Vortex, which is based on the concept of dynamic shared data.< >

There are at least a dozen commercial offerings of interactive PC-based software for computer-aided control system design (CACSD). The CACSD scene has been totally transformed by these developments. It is now possible for any control engineering team to be well equipped with up to date algorithms at very modest cost, to be able to tailor them to its own requirements, and to interface them easily to other software. One of the most important effects of this has been the rapid transfer of technology from academic research to usable software. After remarking briefly on these general points, the author concentrates on a particular family of products based on PC-Matlab.< >

Although optimal control techniques provide, in theory, the ability to design suitable control strategies for general control problems, in practice the results are not commonly implemented due to the large computational requirements for solving such problems. A recent development in computer systems has been the use of parallel processing techniques to speed up computations by sharing the work load over several processors that can interact between each other for message passing, sharing variables etc. In particular the advent of the INMOS transputer with its unique serial links have opened the doors to true parallelism in computer systems and much applications research is currently underway that is aimed at using transputer arrays. An area of interest to the authors is automatic flight control, which could also benefit from the introduction of parallel processing. In the paper the authors present two parallel optimal control algorithms for aircraft systems.< >

The work described falls naturally into two separate but related parts. In the first part, three digital control algorithms are examined based on (i) PID (ii) modified deadbeat and (iii) a linguistic rule-based approach and their performance in regulating a medium-sized marine diesel engine is assessed. The other aspect of the work describes a first attempt at providing a graphical interface with the operator for the real-time monitoring of engine parameters. The software is created in the form of a monitoring toolbox and illustrates the concepts which could form the basis of any future on-line diesel engine health monitoring facility.< >
