An approach is proposed to the determination of approximate solutions of path following optimal control problems by exploiting modern global search and optimization techniques. An optimal path following algorithm for control of multibody systems is developed and a test example for minimum-time-energy control of a two-link manipulator is presented. Computer realization of the proposed method is mainly based on MATLAB simulation programs for function approximation, constrained optimization and geneticalgorithms. The results of the method can be implemented to solve path following optimal control problems in the field of Computer Aided controlengineering, Computer Integrated Manufacturing, Mechatronics and Robotics.

Although it is well understood to be a generally undecidable problem, a number of attempts have been made over the years to develop systems to automatically generate test data to achieve a level of coverage (branch coverage for example). These approaches have ranged at early attempts at symbolic execution to more recent dynamic approaches and, despite their variety (and varying degrees of success), all the systems developed have involved a detailed analysis of the program or system under test. In a departure from this approach, this paper describes a system developed to explore the use of geneticalgorithms to generate test data to automatically meet a level of coverage.

There has been much work on self-tuning PID controllers. There are many possible structures for PID controllers. The basic concepts of PID control can be generalised within the same structure but allowing for the control of complicated dynamic systems using advanced control design algorithms. This structure arises naturally from the system description and does not need to be imposed artificially. The concept of PID control can be usefully generalised to make contact with recent methods such as internal-model control and generalised predictive control. One should not start with a PID controller and then decide how to tune it, but rather one should start with a rational design method and system model from which a (generalised) PID structure will then materialise. Recent advances in local model networks using multiple-model self-tuning PID controllers give a neat extension of the basic (generalised) PID structure to handle nonlinear or time-varying systems. The PID concept is alive and well.

A control engineer is required to design a system to meet the specified desired performance with guaranteed reliability and safety. Reliability and safety are particularly important not only in the field of process control but also in other industrial applications such as the nuclear industry where supervision has always been paramount. The goal of a supervisory structure is to establish the well functioning of a system and design an alarm system able to predict faults early enough to prevent undesirable consequences. Such an algorithm is named a fault detection isolation accommodation algorithm. This is the theme of this paper which combines control and supervision using generalised predictive control and bond graphs. The results are encouraging in the sense that the algorithms have proved effective in detecting, diagnosing and eventually compensating for various simulated faults normally encountered in hospital operating theatre as well as for electro-fluid systems.

The recent success of heuristic methods using intelligent design techniques such as fuzzy logic, neural networks and geneticalgorithms could present possible improvements due to their ability to handle nonlinearities, robustness and their capacity to perform in non-ideal situations. These methods are considered here for possible use in the coordination of the motion of Robug III, an eight-legged, pneumatically-powered climbing and walking robot designed by the Mobile Robotics Group (MRG) at the University of Portsmouth in conjunction with Portech Ltd. and European partners. Emphasis is placed on developing suitable strategies for the control of leg trajectories as well as the overall leg coordination.
