This paper describes the development of actuators based on the giant magnetostrictive material Terfenol-D, including a novel mechanically self-biasing actuator. The range of applications open to these actuators such as linear micropositioning and active vibration control are discussed with appropriate case studies. Specialised control strategies and algorithms are described based on digital variable structure controlprinciples to compensate for the material's nonlinear behaviour characteristics, i.e. hysterectic, static and dynamic load dependency. Implementation on the appropriate microcontroller are given with the case studies.

The principal constituents of soft computing are the fuzzy logic (FL), artificial neural networks (NN) and probabilistic reasoning (PR). It is generally regarded that FL primarily deals with imprecision, NN with learning, and PR with uncertainty. They have, however, overlapping boundaries and are known to be complementary rather than competitive to each other in many applications. Here, two control algorithms, one implemented by fuzzy logic and the other by a neural network, are used as the basis to highlight salient features of soft computing. A DC motor servo system with the proposed soft computing based algorithms is discussed. The fuzzy logic control employs the principles of fuzzy logic to calculate an optimal output action based on input conditions, and a knowledge base expressed in linguistic forms, thereby performing a parallel operation to control the output with a high degree of robustness against parameter change. In the neural network control, focus is on how neural networks can overcome deadzone-plus-saturation nonlinearity commonly found in the power driver of a DC servo motor. Simulation results have been performed to establish the validity of these control algorithms.< >

This paper proposes the use of " personal DSP" to enhance the learning productivity of students having mixed experience and ability levels via hands-on homework and self-study. Individual PC-based DSP laboratories are now available to these learners because remarkable advances in IC technology and software techniques such as GUIs are helping to easily present work done, to advance theoretical concepts in DSP, by many researchers more than two decades ago. It is desirable for electronic engineering undergraduates to acquire a working knowledge of finite word length effects and related scaling problems. Software simulation of digital filters and controllers is an important step; this frequently omitted procedure should be carried out to avoid trouble later in a real-time environment. There are a number of educational DSP programs. DSPworld, a PC-based software package is discussed.

The work resulted in a specification and prototype of the rules governing the separation of aircraft in oceanic airspace. The problem of structure determination in the modelling of non-linear systems is usually the most difficult in system identification. Traditional Volterra-Weiner methods are mathematically tractable but an enormously large number of data points are required to determine the parameters and moreover, the models obtained are still local in a sense. Some strategies adapt physical knowledge of the process to deduce the structure (from first principles) or perhaps simply consider linear approximations. Unfortunately, as is the case with many industrial processes, complete physical knowledge is sometimes either not available or too complicated to be of effective use and many such processes may be too highly non-linear to be modelled effectively by approximate linear schemes. However, for many such processes such as fed-batch processes, the feeding (inputs) and product (output) profiles generally have a known pattern, an optimal product trajectory having been established from years of experience. Thus even though the system typically goes through a wide range of operating conditions, any model obtained need only be local in the sense that there is only little deviation from the nominal trajectory. The principal reason for a model in this case is to predict output (or state) deviations for small input deviations, which can otherwise only be determined by costly laboratory analyses, thus enabling the implementation of optimal control schemes. In this paper, a local input-output approach based on the theory of bifurcations and normal forms is presented and then applied to the modelling of an industrial fed-batch process.< >
