An advisory approach has been taken to the development of two prototype knowledge-based systems for the simulation and design of multi-input multi-output control systems. The control System Simulation Adviser (CSS-Adviser) and the control System Design Adviser (CSD Adviser) were developed on the belief that they were not to initiate any operation without the user's approval. However, during most of the simulation or design process, they can guide the user in making the necessary decisions, help him interpret results, and discover errors which may arise.< >

More recently, there has been a demand for theoretical description of purposive assemblies of technical, biological and socio-economic nature consisting of functional objects connected according to a specific topology. As far as technical assemblies are concerned, this demand has been met by the various approaches to control systems analysis which seem to have a number of disadvantages. The objective of this paper is to describe through examples illustrating the generalised description: (1) an alternative approach to the analysis of technical (and natural) situations based on a mathematical description, which can evolve into a description of technical control systems; and (2) an approach based on a linguistic description applicable to the qualitative and quantitative analysis of socio-economic as well as technical assembling.< >

The development of online drug administration strategies in operating theatres represent a highly safety-critical situation. The usefulness of different levels of simulation prior to clinical trials has been shown in previous studies in muscle relaxant anaesthesia. In the present approach the control software was implemented on the actual machine to be used in theatre, while another computer acted as a real-time patient simulator. The paper illustrates the usefulness of the controller/simulator approach via results of scale-factor selection, choice of self-organising fuzzy logic control rule-base, and the effect of the drug sensitivity scheduler.< >

A major aspect of anaesthetists' work is that of maintaining adequate levels of unconsciousness during surgery in operating theatres. Assessment of unconsciousness is a complex matter, and involves the use of multiple clinical signs including objective measurements and subjective indicators. The research reported involves the development of an expert system called RESAC (real-time expert system for advice and control) which advises anaesthetists on patient's depth of anaesthesia during an operation. It also gives suggested control actions required to maintain suitable levels of surgical anaesthesia. The merging of the clinical numeric and symbolic data in real-time is performed by RESAC, which runs on the inexpensive Atari ST range of computers.< >

The motivation for this study is derived from the potential problem of frost damage to citrus trees in the region surrounding Catania on the Island of Sicily Italy. The frost prediction technique developed during the investigation is based on the application of a parallel and distributed processing methodology to solve a time series weather forecasting problem. Past meteorological data observed and recorded in the region around Catania is used to train a neural network so that, given readings for a particular day, a prediction on whether frost formation is imminent can be made.< >

Summary form only given. The paper covers work carried out by BP Engineering at BP Oil Grangemouth Refinery in Scotland. The 'Connoisseur' modelling and control design/simulation package, from Predictive control Ltd. of Manchester, was linked into the plant control system as part of the project. An overriding aim of the work was to assess the level of ability/specialist knowledge required to make use of such packages in a practical situation. Monitoring and analysis of plant data concentrated on the distillation section of a distillate hydrotreater unit (DHT). Plant modelling to produce predictive relationships for key qualities was carried out and subsequently model-based predictive control (MBPC) algorithms developed and implemented. Monitoring of the plant with and without the new algorithms in use enabled engineers to assess the effectiveness of such techniques.< >

Deals with the design of a neural network regulator (NNR) for nonlinear industrial dynamic systems, based on the multilayer perceptron (MLP) and using a hierarchically performed backpropagation (BP) algorithm. A novel network architecture is employed for regulator design: the NNR consists of two subnetworks, one of which is used for I-O (input-output) mapping, while the other acts as an adaptive controller. The BP algorithm is employed to reproduce a nonlinear relation between the inputs and outputs of the plant and to update regulator parameters. The proposed architecture has the flexibility for adding more sensory information and facilitates extension to multi-input, multi-output systems and multivariable controllers. The operation of the NNR does not require a reference model or inverse system model, or any probing signals, and can produce more acceptable control signals than are obtained using the sign of the plant errors during the backpropagation procedure. The regulator has been applied to a complex nonlinear turbogenerator system.< >

The development and evaluation of an expert advisor for system identification (EASI) is described. The principles behind a suitable knowledge representation paradigm for a system which includes both intelligent tutoring and software package front-end concepts are outlined. The system has been constructed using an expert system ‘text-animation’ shell with linkage into Prolog-2 to provide enhancements. These extensions have included an online dictionary and bibliographic material. The identification domain aspects covered include experimental design, model structure determination, estimation algorithms, with applications to SISO and MIMO linear systems, and SISO nonlinear dynamics. Different levels of user-model are provided, and the advisor acts as a front-end to a number of in-house identification packages.

The importance of applications to control access to sensitive computer data is receiving widespread acceptance in our increasingly IT dependent society. Within this paper we develop some of the issues surrounding typical computer security controlapplications, in particular we focus on the dynamics of closed-loop access control where a major component on the system can be unreliable (a human being). We illustrate the problems of attempting to enforce rigid rules on users and discuss how the performance of a security system can be appraised. We highlight the tradeoffs that must be made in computer security control systems design and point to dynamic knowledgebased systems as one approach which may assist in the future.

The problem of considering time in knowledge-based real-time process control is considered. It is suggested that a qualitative reasoning method and a temporal logic should be combined in one system. Many of the problems can be attacked at the level of knowledge structure and knowledge organisation. Therefore, it is proposed that the knowledge bases be extended with a short history structure to incorporate the extra dimension of time. At the same time it is desired to leave the option of employing a qualitative representation scheme or a temporal logic. This strategy has implications on the short history structure. That structure is described.< >
