The VIEWS (visual inspection and evaluation of wide-area scenes) project described seeks to use advanced visual processing for monitoring and surveillance tasks in traffic scenes, including typical road traffic and ground traffic at airports. The major objective of the project is to develop and demonstrate a system capable of interpreting complex traffic scenes in real-time. An important component of VIEWS is the establishment of support tools to assist in the knowledge acquisition stage, and to allow automatic 'compilation' of visual strategies at the time the application is defined.< >

The author looks at the operating principles and automation concept of a combined cycle power plant producing electricity and district heating energy. Process monitoring and control is built using the decentralized design and applying a microprocessor-based automation system and a calculation system equipped with a powerful workstation. The author discusses in detail the control of district heating and power production, calculation of process and economy characteristics, and operation optimisation as a part of the energy production system.< >

The work being undertaken in ESPRIT II project number P2397, PROMISE is described. A brief overview of the structure of the project is given. This is followed by a more detailed discussion of the goals of the project. The author focuses on the work being done within the project in constructing a multi-media presentation system for use in dynamic, real-time, process controlapplications. He takes a computer science perspective and concentrates on the technical problems encountered in attempting to construct such a system. Conclusions are drawn on the work undertaken so far and the future work foreseen.< >

As the volume of data collected by an increasing number of satellites escalates, it has become of paramount importance that methods of coping with and making best use of this information are developed. Current trends are moving towards automatic and knowledge-based analysis systems particularly for monitoring applications where the same kinds of interpretation task must be repeated many times. The MuSIP project, part funded by the European ESPRIT programme for research information, aims to develop a software demonstrator for the automatic fusion and analysis of multisource data. The project recognises this need across all computer vision applications and so will test the demonstrator on two dissimilar applications, one in the field of remote sensing and one in the field of medical image analysis. The target remote sensing application is the monitoring of forestry using a dataset of radar and optical imagery, map and ground data. This paper introduces the modules that comprise the demonstrator that is: a supervisor with its associated knowledge bases, algorithms and the databases. Attention is focussed in particular on the role of knowledge bases and the methods of data fusion.< >

The Intelligent Simulation group within Sheffield University's control Engineering department is involved in the production of mathematical modelling software to simulate physical systems. Specifically the group has developed a suite of PC-based programs called KEMS (knowledge-based environment for modelling and simulation). KEMS encompasses a wide range of different tasks within a single application and different parts of the system are coded in different languages. Because of this, and the complexity of the application itself, the quality of the user-interface is particularly important. It was therefore decided to construct the user-interface using a specialised front-end builder. The package chosen eventually for this task was Expert-EASE Systems' EASE+. EASE stands for engineering applications software environment, and it is essentially a flexible graphics database management system which contains an interface development toolbox. EASE+ can be mounted on either PCs or workstations, and as well as being a development tool, it is capable of producing runtime software modules.< >

This paper describes work in progress on the development of an environment for distributed opportunistic knowledge-basedcontrol of an assembly workcell. It describes a centralised blackboard based upon a modified form of the architecture of B. Hayes-Roth (1985), a relational and geometric modeller, and a message-based communication mechanism.< >

The strength of the intelligent parallel control (IPC) structure is that the controller emphasis can be placed on implementation aspects seen to be of particular relevance by the practitioner. Of primary importance therefore, is the capture and classification of relevant 'expert' knowledge in terms of the plant and likely appropriate control action. It is shown in the paper how the collected knowledge-base, which is a key feature of IPCs, can be of great benefit in the cautious use of more dynamic control schemes, and can therefore allow for the employment of performance enhancing controllers whilst retaining a safety-first approach.< >

Describes a help system built using POP-11 in the POPLOG environment, to assist in the development of knowledge-based models in ACSL (Advanced Continuous Simulation Language). Interactive means of model entry are described. Two sorts of knowledge are generated; general simulation knowledge, and deep knowledge about how ACSL is to perform its functions. The inference engine uses forward and backward chaining. The overall structure of the system is described.< >
