The article describes a multi-level modelling system, MODEL, developed for compartmental modelling of physiological systems. MODEL provides a unified framework for both qualitative and quantitative simulations of behaviour based on an explicit conceptual representation of the system of interest. The main applications are to problems in metabolism, and to drug kinetics and effects. The design of the GTO-based SR drive system rated at 25kW will be discussed with particular emphasis on output performance and control characteristics. A plan is a sequence of actions which when executed will achieve some pre-set goal or goals, and by planning we mean the creation of such plans. It is in order to achieve the automation of the planning process that Artificial Intelligence (AI) planning research was begun. An internal research and development project carried out by Scicon Ltd has studied AI planning techniques and produced a software demonstrator system, Scinapse, for the purpose of investigating the feasibility of this approach to real applications. Scinapse has been applied to a logistics problem involving the planning of land and sea transport movements. The logistics application was chosen as an example for various reasons, not least the ability of non-experts in the fields of AI planning and logistics to readily understand the problem and to see how solutions are reached.

Current expert systems tend to use heuristics to guide search at a 'surface layer', relating observed signals to implied underlying causes and faults. Few applications of Al in control and monitoring thus far have considered the dynamics of the systems they are monitoring - most look for a combination of static signal conditions. In today's less complex applications, these restrictions are often tolerable, but future controllers for very complex systems, capable of reasoning about and controlling new situations, will have to reason at deep levels about cause and effect and dynamic behaviour of the observed system. Two areas of interest then become important - deep knowledge, the use of structured theory and reasoning over it - and simulation as a means of inferring future behaviour and checking the credibility of hypotheses.

DOR is an acronym for Digital Optical Recording since the system uses an optical method for digital data storage and retrieval. Many of the principles underlying DOR and production techniques used for DOR media (e. g. mastering and replication techniques) are already successfully applied in home entertainment systems such as Laservision and Digital Audio. All these systems have in common that a laser beam is used for the reading of information from disks. The home entertainment systems are read-only systems, but in case of DOR digital information can also be written and organized under own control on the medium. The first DOR drives became operational 4 years ago and were relatively large (gas-laser based) with applications foreseen for mass data storage and document/image storage and retrieval. The current O. S. I. Laser Drive 1200 system is a low cost, small peripheral with a wide range of applications. This product is a result of applying recent progress both in optics and in laser technology, in combination with a high level of integrated electronics and advanced design concepts.
