GAMBITS (Graphical Approach to Modelling and Building Interactively a Technical system) has evolved to fill the gaps in other methods by providing support for (1) the progressive realisation and the traceability of functional and non-functional requirements from initial conception, through implementation to maintenance; (2) the human involvement in the system, from the procurer, developer and user perspectives; and (3) support for building embedded, real-time and large distributed systems. The GAMBITS method permits successive refinement of understanding from emerging needs, through progressive transformations of an implementation-independent specification, to partial or full realisation of a local or distributed system. Starting with a business objective, the method allows the representation of concepts at different development stages or lifecycle steps. The method permits substantial verification of an implementation through traceability links that can map each component of requirement to the design and the subsequent implementation in a procedural or object-oriented application.

Most simulation practitioners argue that collection and analysis of input data takes a considerably long time, typically, more than one third of the project time. The analysis of literature and a questionnaire survey conducted at the 1997 Winter Simulation conference identified major reasons which lead to longer data collection time. It appears that most of research undertaken to date has been focused upon statistical data analysis techniques and no or little has been carried out to develop methods to accelerate the collection of input data required in simulation models. This paper presents research work undertaken on input data modelling for the simulation of batch manufacturing systems. It describes the development of a data reference model using IDEFlX data modelling language and a step-by-step approach to identify and collect required data quickly. The purpose of this reference model is to describe the interaction between various data groups relating to items such as parts, resources and some aspects of system logic. This model has been developed and refined using data collected from real industrial situations. The model encapsulates the major entities (data groups) with their attributes and relationships. This model was then translated into a normalised relational database. Having developed the data model, a step-by-step approach was devised to support simulation practitioners. The reference model has been annotated with the sources of real data, so that practitioners could identify the most suitable source of data for their requirements.

The authors report and evaluate the experience of applying object-oriented techniques to the development of a real-time system for monitoring and control of remote sites. The system which is currently installed at several sites in the UK and elsewhere in Europe also includes database management functions and an interactive operator interface. The authors focus on the object-oriented aspects of the system architecture and on the development process model. Together they provide a technical and organisational framework for projects of similar nature. The pros and cons of the solutions adopted are discussed.< >

This presentation is about software process improvement (SPI) and some of the ways in which Jackson methods can contribute to that end. It draws on recent experience from two projects in which the author has been involved, implementing the Level 2 and 3 key practices of the SEI's Capability Maturity Model. Jackson methods have been around for quite some time. They have matured with users experience and they contain many techniques that are fundamental to the understanding and description of any processes, whether those processes be implemented by machines or imperfectly by human beings. The relative importance of the problems to be solved has changed: once, we were concerned with how to solve collating problems and structure clashes. Now we know how, and we have moved on to solve larger and more valuable problems. Of course, there are many other useful techniques, and we should not be shy to incorporate them when convenient and useful. In this way, the methods continue to grow in scope and to address the real problems of solving problems.

The paper presents an investigation into the utilisation of parallel processing techniques in the real-time simulation of a flexible manipulator system. The performance demands of modern control systems require the employment of complex algorithms with demanding operations. This, in turn, leads to shorter sampling times. Therefore, real-time performances with complex algorithms become difficult to achieve. Many demanding complex processes cannot be satisfactorily realised with conventional uni-processor and multi-processor systems. Thus, alternative strategies where multi-processor based systems are employed, making effective use of parallel processing techniques, could provide suitable solutions. A finite dimensional simulation of a single-link flexible manipulator system is developed through discretisation of the governing dynamic equation of the system both in time and space co-ordinates using finite difference approximation methods. The proposed algorithm allows for dynamic modification of the boundary conditions and inclusion of distributed actuator and sensor terms in the system dynamic equation.< >

The Unified Modeling Language (UML) is fast emerging as a de-facto standard for modelling object oriented systems. Like other software engineering methods, UML provides a set of graphical and textual modelling tools that aim to provide a common understandable language for developers and customers. However, UML has gone much further than previous methods in encouraging conformance of use. In particular, it provides a semantics document which aims to precisely describe the structure and meaning of the language. Recently, UML version 1.1 was accepted by the Object Management Group as a standard notation for object oriented analysis and design. Because of its growing popularity and the fact that it supports a number of real time facilities, there is a growing interest in applying UML to real time systems. Developers of safety-critical systems are also interested in UML because it claims to offer greater formality than other OO methods. There is hope that UML can provide a user friendly replacement for traditional formal notations. The article examines some of the issues associated with adopting UML for the development of safety-critical, real time systems. In particular we describe the current version of the language and its semantics (version 1.1) and explore its suitability as a basis for the formal specification of such systems. We then discuss some of the issues regarding formal refinement and deduction of UML models.

Future automobile architectures will be based on networked electronics. Designers of such networked systems envisage a new class of highly sophisticated complexity; therefore a new class of appropriate system design support tools is required. The author describes a full set of such tools, consisting of a network simulator, a network emulator and a network analyzer. The simulator is used for system layout purposes without the need for actual system hardware. The emulator replaces in real time real system components. The analyzer is used for verification of the system layout in the actual real system. As networks are the backbone of future automobile systems networks, development tools are fundamental for efficient automobile system design.< >

The Civil Aviation Authority is introducing a major new development into the London Air Traffic Control Centre. The central control function (CCF) is based on changes to the sectorisation of airspace to improve traffic throughput by introducing the so-called 'tunnels-in-the-sky'. In support of CCF a number of computerised systems are being upgraded and new ones introduced. One of the new systems is the CCF display information system (CDIS). CDIS is a distributed real-time system running on a network of dualled computers communicating over a dual token ring local area network (LAN). The authors describe the use of formal methods in the development of CDIS.< >

Simulation techniques are used extensively in power system operation, the principle application of simulators being control staff training, particularly for dealing with emergencies. Other applications span timescales of operational planning from up to several years ahead through to real-time operation. The authors show that there is a need for simulation in the development of power system closed loop control facilities as might be used for automatic voltage generation and frequency control.< >

Modeling and simulation are important components of present day HF radio communications standards development process. This paper summarizes work at the Institute for Telecommunication Sciences (ITS) under the direction and funding of the National Communications system (NCS) in the development of simulation tools useful in the HF standards development process in the United States. The simulation tools are introduced from the perspective of (1) the phase of the standards development process to which the tools may be applied and (2) the communication system layer to which they may be applicable. Particular emphasis in this paper is placed on the development of a new real-time HF channel simulator, the development of a compact disk-based automatic link establishment (ALE) tone simulator, and the development of a general purpose digital signal processor-based system for simulating HF network protocols.
