Power electronic systems provide a considerable challenge to CAD packages due to their strong nonlinearities and widely varying time constants. This is particularly so if an attempt is made to simulate the entire system including the power circuit, load characteristics, control loops and thermal effects. Due to the lack of available tools and desktop computing power it has been normal practice to study each of these aspects independently. This has limited the effectiveness of CAD for power electronic systems since important interactions are inevitably either overlooked or simplified to the point that they are unrealistic. In addition, considerable ingenuity has been required on the part of the user to partition the problem in such a way that meaningful results are obtained in a reasonable computation time. The situation is however changing and tools are now becoming available which enable us to get closer to a "complete system" simulation. In this paper we concentrate on combined simulations of power electronic circuits (including representations for the load and supply) and their control systems principally for the purpose of control system design and validation prior to prototyping. The need for a combined approach is illustrated with reference to the design of an active filter system. A "wish list" of desirable features for a CAD package is outlined. Some commonly used programs are compared and our experiences in applying them to this problem are discussed.

The Power system Blockset enables the user to build models that simulate power systems rapidly and easily. Since it uses the SIMULINK environment, the electrical system built with the blocks from the blockset can be connected to other systems (mechanical, thermal, control etc.) in order to investigate the interactions between them. The Power system Blockset is compatible with all of the MATLAB application toolboxes and blocksets. This means that, for example, the control system toolbox could be used to design a controller for the electrical system while the Optimization toolbox could be used to optimize the performance of the overall system. By integrating the Power system Blockset with STATEFLOvW, one can model and simulate complex reactive systems. Consistent with the open system philosophy of MATLAB, the Power system Blockset is completely extensible and can be used as a starting point for the creation of additional custom blocks.

The increase in desk top computing has lead to an increase in the sophistication of both design and simulation tools available to the design engineer. One such tool becoming more widespread amongst academia and industry is Mathworks Simulink/Matlab package. This paper describes how Simulink can be used as an integrated development environment for the simulation and real-time control of electric motor systems. The paper starts by describing how motor and drive systems can be dynamically simulated within the Simulink/Matlab environment. This is then illustrated with the control example of a permanent magnet motor. The Simulink environment allows a controller to be modelled with the aid of block diagrams, allowing the user to concentrate on the model, rather than its implementation. This approach can be become even more powerful, if the same Simulink control circuit can then be taken and implemented in real time. The system that is described uses Mathworks Simulink C-Code generator toolbox to achieve an automated high-level real time programming environment for a TMS320C31 DSP based motor control system. The software system described takes the generated C-Code and optimises the code for speed, also interfaces to real-time program libraries and the DSP compiler to generate real-time executable code. The nature of the developed software allows the system to be used with a variety of processors.

A complex signal path model (SPM) of a high-power radar transmitter system has been developed at using Alta's Signal Processing Worksystem (SPW) and has been used as an aid in the design and validation of of a suitable waveform and amplifier linearisation scheme which were needed to ensure an output signal conforming to both spectral and detectability requirements. The SPM has been created to assist in mitigating the risk associated with such a large system. The model simulates the entire signal path from generation and transmission, through propagation to reception, and signal processing to produce a peak detection, and is one of the most comprehensive of its kind. This paper considers the essential components of the transmission subsystem of the SPM, which is a hierarchical block-oriented model, exemplifying its role in developing and validating a sweep feedback control mechanism designed to linearise the output of the high-power transmitter amplifiers. The interaction of modelling with field trials using representative equipment is shown to play an essential role in this process.

A system has been developed for monitoring the anaesthetic state of patients during surgical interventions under general anaesthesia using propofol for unconsciousness and fentanyl for analgesia. This subject has received much attention from the research community especially since the advent of balanced anaesthesia, which has made the detection of awareness much more difficult. Mid-Latency Auditory Evoked Potentials (MLAEPs) obtained during general anaesthesia are being used within the design of a neuro-fuzzy system for the determination of the level of unconsciousness after feature extraction using multiresolution wavelet analysis. A second measure for depth of anaesthesia is based on the cardiovascular system status, e.g. blood pressure and heart rate. The 2 measures are fused and a final depth of anaesthesia is assessed. Based on the classified Depth of Anaesthesia (DOA), a target concentration is decided by a rule-based fuzzy logic controller which feeds the set-point to a Target controller Infusion algorithm (TCI) for maintaining automatic drug infusion. The patient is simulated using a 3 compartment mathematical model of the drug infusion and effect. The system provides a closed-loop architecture that can automatically provide the drug profile necessary to maintain the patient at a safe level of anaesthesia. Subsequently, the system can be used as an on-line advisory system (training simulator) designed for guidance on the target of propofol concentration to be used. This open-loop system includes the anaesthetist within the loop controlling the final target concentration for TCI system, thereby maintaining overall control over the system. Here, a patient simulator is described for use with DOA measurements and a control system. The simulator runs on a separate PC in order to provide a realistic simulation environment. As part of a CEC MAST 3 project entitled PROSIM, (propagation channel simulator), the Ocean systems Laboratory at Heriot-Watt University was given the task of planning and performing acoustic data gathering experiments off the west coast of Scotland, in the Clyde due west of Ayr, in the summer of 1997. The PROSIM project has as its aim the development of a software channel model simulator that will be able to predict or simulate the effect of a broadband audio frequency source (400 Hz to 15 kHz), in shallow water acoustic channels, at realistic long ranges. Sea surface, sea bottom and propagation effects are included in this simulator design. The University of Wales Marine Science Laboratories had the task of collecting oceanographic data during these trials. Acoustic and oceanographic data collected during these (and other) trials are used to assist in the validation of the PROSIM channel simulator. Selected data are also supplied to the UK Oceanographic Data Centre where it is available for use by EC acoustics researchers. Much of the receive equipment, both acoustic and data recording had been developed during a previous CEC MAST 2 project which had used omni-directional acoustic projectors in the 20 kHz to 80 kHz band. Under this project entitled EEVMAC (European experimental validated model for acoustic channels) a high level control strategy based on a LABVIEW environment had been developed which allowed full PC control over both the transmit and receive ships experimental equipment.

This paper discusses the development of robust versions of multivariable non-minimal state space design procedures, for the proportional-integral-plus (PIP) control systems previously introduced by Young et al. (1994). Robust control design aims to ensure good closed loop performance under difficult conditions, such as model uncertainty and "worst case" disturbance inputs. In this regard, the practical utility of the PIP controllers are evaluated on two systems, namely a multivariable coupled drive rig and the IFAC93 benchmark. The first of these examples is a laboratory scale plant representing a materials handling system, where control of speed and tension is required; while the latter is a stochastic simulation, whose parameters vary randomly within specified ranges.

The hybrid Flow Net (HFN) was used to model the continuous and discrete aspects of a system. This modeling tool is based on Petri nets and continuous flow nets, which can be seen as a continuous nonlinear extension of Petri nets. Hybrid behavior was represented by the interaction of this two kind of nets, with a cross validation of the transition of one net by places of the other and vice versa. HFN can be used for simulation and control law design.

The paper describes a framework for the modelling and simulation of hybrid systems and the implementation of the strategy in the real-time Expert system tool, G2. The strategy is predicated on three key notions: hybrid model base, interactions between dissimilar model elements, and hybrid simulation. The combination of a hybrid model structure, incorporating Grafcets, equations, rules and objects, with the real-time features of G2 is shown to be an efficient vehicle for the integration of process functions such as supervisory control, sequential control, scheduling, fault monitoring and optimisation.

ANDECS is a the new generation of open CAF system for computational experimenting in controlled dynamics systems simulation, analysis, and multi-objective optimization. It strict databased function modularization with neutral object-oriented data- and model interfaces allows a flexible configuration of computational chains and loops. Also, its function modules can be used for basic mathematical methods, control methods, simulation, parameter- and trajectory optimization, and interactive visualization for result- and algorithm animation. ANDECS supports interoperability by exchanging both commands and data via interprocess communication with: MATLAB and Xmath for system dynamics analysis and synthesis;KHOROS and Data explorer For versatile results visualization;KISMET as robot animation package;and the like.
