The selected filter interacting multiple model algorithm (SFIMM) is a modification of the IMM algorithm which needs a smaller number of models than the IMM algorithm. The algorithm uses a subset of the models of the standard IMM and employs adaptive techniques to select models close to the system model. In this paper the SFIMM algorithm has been employed to estimate the state and forcing function of a system. The performance of the SFIMM algorithm is compared with the IMM algorithm using simulation.

This paper has brought together analysis of main suspension disturbance sources, modelling of active and passive quarter car systems, and control (at a single wheel station) of both an active model and a full-scale hydraulic test rig. model validation results have been presented which show a high degree of correlation between the dynamic model and rig fitted with a passive strut. Results indicate the inclusion of strut stiction and tyre damping models may enhance the degree of match still further. Closed loop experimental rig results qualitatively match those of the simulation. However, the prototype strut suffers from a high level of static friction, and work has not progressed to the ideal point where a controller design based on the dynamic model can directly transcribed and implemented on the rig.

A problem common to many chemical processes is the presence of a significant pure time delay, due either to transport lag or high order dynamics. model based control techniques, such as internal model control, (Garcia and Morari, 1982) and Smith predictors, (Smith, 1958) have been proposed for the control of such plants. For most practical applications, such as chemical, power plants, etc. Process modelling can represent a substantial task requiring much development time, (Nicholson, 1980). An alternative is to develop a suitable parametric model that fits in some manner input, output and noise data from the plant, (Ljung and Soderstrom, 1983). In particular linear parametric models form the basis of many of the popular adaptive control techniques, such as pole-placement and minimum-variance self-tuning control, (Wellstead and Zarrop, 1991) and model predictive control techniques, (Clarke et al., 1987). In this work it is proposed to utilise such model based approaches to improve the control performance of an industrial polymerisation reactor. This involves the development of a process model using system identification techniques, the simulation of the plant within the Simulink environment to allow for the design and validation of control strategies. From these studies a Smith predictor was implemented to significantly improve the polymer viscosity control. Finally a hardware platform is developed to facilitate the implementation of sophisticated algorithms such as recursive least squares, that could not be accommodated on the present DCS.

For a water distribution system simulation the three main causes of uncertainty are: an inaccurate network model; inaccurate predictions of consumptions; and errors associated with measurements (random and systematic). A smaller contribution to simulation uncertainty comes from the inaccuracy of the mathematical solution techniques and from the precision limits of the computers used. The input uncertainty, from all these sources, is transferred, through the state estimation process, and results in estimates of the operating states that are also uncertain. The precise way in which the input uncertainty affects the accuracies of calculated states is rather complicated, many interrelated factors are involved. The distribution of meters throughout the network, the network's topology and the operating state of the network all play an important role. Confidence limit analysis-the process of quantifying this uncertainty on state estimates-has implications in many areas of water system operations from distribution system design, through telemetry system design and implementation to real-time control and decision support. This paper reports our experiences with the ellipsoid algorithm that has been adapted to provide confidence limits on state estimates in the nonlinear water system state estimation proces.< >

Tactile sensing is not simply the ability to detect that a contact has occurred between an object and a manipulator, but encompasses a more comprehensive ability to grasp and identify shape, surface features, material features, force and slippage etc. As technology progresses, sensors able to detect these features have become a reality, and the problem of integrating the information from such sensors must be taken into account. To achieve this objective an appropriate system organisation is required to efficiently and correctly integrate the data into a robust world model. Since the number of sensors that may be applied to any kind of problem is increasing daily, modularity, reusability and expandability are important properties. To achieve this flexibility an object oriented approach has been followed in modelling the system. The authors consider the use of a multi-functional tactile system and its integration with an object oriented expert identifier system (OOEIS) which is able to fuse data coming from a sensorized finger, with the aim of identifying the material properties of an object being touched.< >

The operational demands of modern underwater vehicles pose problems which test the ingenuity of the control engineer. Classical design methods can be adequate for such a vehicle but may be found lacking when a modular vehicle configuration changes from mission to mission, or when hydrodynamics are inherently nonlinear, as in the case of many remotely operated vehicles (ROVs). Modern methods of control have the potential to overcome such limitations but their effectiveness requires proper assessment. An ideal testbed is a prototype vehicle or a scaled model. In water trials are, however, time consuming and expensive to undertake and preliminary tuning and assessment of a controller using a simulation would help to focus the experiments. The paper describes the use of a six-degree of freedom computer simulation of the hydrodynamics of underwater vehicles prior to design of attitude control schemes. Work to validate the simulation and to tune it to the underwater vehicles is discussed and the direction of the authors' future work in this area is presented.< >

A typical drive system comprises a motor, an inverter and a controller. To limit costs it is necessary to reach a compromise between the performance of each component. By modelling the entire drive system on a computer, the 'best' compromise can be established. To do this requires an easy and meaningful measure of drive performance. One useful approach is to consider the drive as a torque actuator in a control system, and to establish the frequency response of the drive. The computer model described adopts this method. The authors briefly describe the performance analysis method and the simulation program. The results of simulation of a 1.5 kW 4 pole induction motor are discussed.< >

control of production processes is increasingly becoming more important to make products of higher quality, to reduce waste of energy and materials, and to increase production flexibility. To improve the overall process performance, process operators require more insight in the behaviour of the process. Particularly, when changeovers frequently occur, or when the process often experiences disturbances, operators need to be able to understand and control the dynamic behaviour of the process. Developments in MIMO process modelling and model based control system design as well as developments in hardware have opened new perspectives for supervisory control. model based controllers and fast real-time simulators can be implemented at the DCS level providing fast and accurate MIMO supervisory control or process simulation. The models underlying the control design can also be applied for training operators in the use of these supervisory controllers and for providing insight in the behaviour of the process.< >

This paper describes the development of a full envelope, multivariable Lynx helicopter flight control system. The control law development has been completed and fully evaluated in off-line simulation and initial simulation trials have been performed on the RAE Bedford flight simulator. Full scale piloted simulation trials are scheduled to take place in April 1992. An important factor in choosing the loop-shaping design method was the robustness which this design method offers against modelling errors or variation in the plant dynamics: previous controller implementations have required several iterations in order to re-tune the controller to take account of differences between the model and the real helicopter. The main operational benefits, however, arise from the decoupled performance which a multivariable controller can provide: by employing a controller of this type the pilot workload is not only significantly reduced, but even more importantly in a combat situation, higher performance can be achieved.< >
