The paper formulates the multiagent fault-tolerant supervisory control of serial production systems under partial observation based on unobservable fault identification utilising the difference information of the controlled results. This allows the productivity of the serial production systems to be improved and the facilities to be protected in a certain abnormal situation. A case study of the fault-propagation control of polypropylene prepolymerisation and polymerisation reactors is provided to illustrate the proposed control scheme.

UML design procedure enables constructing abstract continuous and discreteevent models of the components and the synchronization logic. Owing to competitive changes in the electric power industry, it is essential to protect the large financial and human resources investment a utility makes when acquiring a SCADA/EMS. Past experience has indicated that, with proper planning, an obsolete SCADA/EMS can be incrementally augmented. The migration approach provides immediate access to new technology while capital costs are spread over a number of years. To evaluate the different migration options of an area dispatch and control system, a discreteeventsimulation method is used to study the performance of different migration designs. A thorough analysis of a functionally distributed architecture under realistic conditions is conducted, and the results are reported.

The hybrid Flow Net (HFN) was used to model the continuous and discrete aspects of a system. This modeling tool is based on Petri nets and continuous flow nets, which can be seen as a continuous nonlinear extension of Petri nets. Hybrid behavior was represented by the interaction of this two kind of nets, with a cross validation of the transition of one net by places of the other and vice versa. HFN can be used for simulation and control law design.

Summary form only given. Hybrid systems are systems which combine both continuous variable and discreteevent dynamics. Their complexity has risen to the extent that traditional approaches which dealt separately with the continuous and discrete aspects of such systems have become obsolete. Instead of proposing a novel formal notation for the specification of controllers for hybrid systems we have developed extended real time Logic (ERTL) as a formal notation for the modelling and analysis of relative and absolute timing properties of hybrid systems. ERTL embeds the discrete system model of the real time logic (RTL) of Jahanian and Mok (1986, 1988) into continuous time, and adds the ability to reason about piecewise continuous functions using predicates over real valued variables. While RTL is able to formally describe the behaviour of computational entities in the time domain, ERTL also permits the formal description of the behaviour of physical entities in both value and time domains.

A simulation can be developed graphically or in a general purpose language or by a simulation package which is a set of common routines or by a generic model or by a data driven method.
