In the ASCOT project, Case Based Reasoning (CBR) increased the toolset's potential usability by separating user's requirements from the engineering requirements of the telecommunication service providers. This was achieved naturally and cleanly. No lengthy on-line user interrogation was needed. Additionally, the user's involvement in the process was not compromised because he always has the final choice over which service to select, or could choose to further refine his requirements.

In this paper a novel objectoriented motion estimation algorithm is presented. The algorithm provides the means for highly efficient moving image encoding by fully exploiting the temporal redundancy among the objects of successive frames. Two-dimensional segmentation is performed on a composite image synthesized from two consecutive frames. The object correspondence problem is removed implicitly by virtue of the fact that the generated composite segments correspond to successive versions of the same objects. Thus the scheme not only solves the problem of the correspondence between successive versions of the same object, but it also guarantees well matched segments in the presence of noise and varying illumination. Moreover, it preserves motion or deformation information. Progressive motion estimation is achieved within the segmentation process which adapts to the assumed translational or affine model. Motion compensated extrapolation is performed on uncovered background and overlapping regions of the predicted frame. simulation results prove the efficiency of the predictive scheme even in the case that only motion and deformation parameters need to be transmitted.

The paper discusses SWOOPVR which is a combination of the SWOOP mixed-mode industrial simulation language and VROOM virtual reality package, both developed at the University of Sheffield. SWOOP is a simulation toolbox that runs under Turbo Pascal and allows the simulation of both discrete and continuous systems. On its own it allows simulation output as numerical data, statistical summaries, time-based graphs or high quality two-dimensional animation. The paper discusses some manufacturing applications of the package.

The software package "AVS/Express" provides tools for the visualization of complex scientific data however also allows researchers to create experimental data representations. Field data interpretation applications are constructed using a visual programming environment, and includes graphical user interface tools (GUI). AVS/Express presents a screen giving overall control of the operating paradigm. Called the "network editor", it contains iconic representations of programme modules. Coloured lines connecting the modules represent data and control relationships in the application. Unlike other programming environments, no distinction is made between library components and running versions of these components, and dynamic changes of the running programme is allowed. The modules in the network editor are managed by the system provided object manager. control, messages, and shared data areas are managed by the object manager. The objects defined in the system, as well as the visual programming system and the object manager, are based on objectoriented concepts. How the system behaves with regards to a traditional C++ program development environment is summarised.

Experiences on the development of an advanced control system using the object-oriented programming (OOP) language Smalltalk-80 revealed that the language has many powerful features for rapid prototyping and simulating advanced control systems, especially those involving intelligent features. In the development of an intelligent system identification supervisor (ISIS), Smalltalk-80 proved very suitable for incorporation into control-orientedsimulation languages. Smalltalk 80's advantage lies in its portability, productivity, user interface and language. An overview of the development of ISIS is presented and the disadvantages of the language are described.

This paper reports and evaluates the experience of applying object-oriented techniques to the development of a real-time system for monitoring and control of remote sites. The system, which is currently installed at several sites in the UK and elsewhere in Europe, also includes database management functions and an interactive operator interface. It was originally designed in 1987 and has evolved in an incremental fashion to the present day. The paper focuses on the object-oriented aspects of the system architecture and on the development process model. Together they provide a technical and organisational framework for projects of similar nature. The pros and cons of the solutions adopted are discussed.
