A software tool is described that allows a wide variety of digital radio links to be modelled at varying levels of detail. It comprises a library of some 300 C/sup ++/ classes residing within another tool that provides features applicable to a wide range of modelling problems such as parameter handling, graphics facilities and simulationcontrol, as well as a basic graphical user interface. The structure of the class library and the construction of models are described. Examples of particular modelling problems show the benefits of the objectoriented approach.< >

A large-scale, collaborative, industrial research project has recently implemented a state-of-the-art distributed platform to support the integration of supervisory control systems for the process and manufacturing industries. This platform is distinct in that its internals are entirely object based and provide a complete abstract specification for the system configuration which can be manipulated dynamically through a range of programming interfaces. This paper discusses the approach taken and outlines some features of one recent research prototype.< >

The modelling of radar systems is a complex process that has evolved over many years with the development of computer based technology. During this evolution some modelling techniques have been successful and others have failed. The author looks at what modelling frameworks are, why they are now being considered in the assessment of radar systems, what benefits they offer, and the pitfalls that can occur if they are not managed or planned correctly. Based on this assessment a strategy is put forward for the implementation of modelling frameworks that should yield both short term modelling goals and long term economy in software development. In particular the author discusses the objectoriented approach.< >

Acumen is a collaborative research project whose goal is to define the requirements of an applications platform which will support the integration of software products in process and manufacturing industry thereby enhancing the useability and effectiveness of such products. A prototype applications platform is produced and demonstrated. The objectoriented paradigm has been adopted throughout the project, with P. Cood and E. Yourdon's (1991) methodology being used for analysis and design. The applications platform itself is implemented in C/sub ++/ in a Unix environment. The authors described the basic architecture of the applications platform and discuss some of the constraints upon its design.< >

A model to determine the detection performance of an integrated sensor suite was specified by the Defence Research Agency (DRA) Portsdown and produced by Logica Defence & Civil Government Ltd. The model interfaced with data arrays representing each sensor and provided performance measures for phased array radars and other active and passive sensors against specific target parameters, environmental conditions and electronic warfare activity. The model was written using objectoriented software techniques in C++ to run on an IBM PC under Microsoft Windows. The results of model runs are displayed dynamically using a dynamic data exchange (DDE) link to an Excel spreadsheet. A map is displayed illustrating how the scenario evolves the time. The main benefits of using Windows are that the user can readily define what ships and aircraft are in the scenario and the equipment fitted. The platform's position, movement and equipment events are also specified as part of a consistent user interface.< >

LabStation is a general purpose instrument integration and laboratory automation CASE tool. It provides a total operating and development environment on top of the PC's operating system. LabStation is unique as an instrument interfacing tool as it provides a total solution to the problem of acquiring data from instruments and transferring it to a LIMS. Unlike most PC based systems that can only acquire data from a single instrument, LabStation can control and acquire data from a number of instruments concurrently. It can also perform background communication with a LIMS running on a remote host. LabStation is multitasking and event driven. In order to accomplish these programming objectives, LabStation uses the object orientated programming paradigm. The author introduces the LabStation environment, provides details on the usage of the standard system, and gives details of the various data acquisition methods that are possible.< >

The National Grid Company has developed two expert systems for telemetry processing. In each case the object is to reduce the flow of information to the engineer. Firstly, the alarm handling and fault analysis expert system (AHFA) is designed as an online tool for an area control centre, where it can diagnose multiple simultaneous faults in real time from switching indications alone. Diagnosis is reported incrementally, as each telemetry message arrives-there is no fixed 'time window' to wait for all messages to arrive, and there is no need for a simulation process, which would otherwise further delay the response. Secondly, the automatic fault record analysis expert system (AFRA) is designed to assist the offline analysis of substation fault records, primarily by filtering out cases where there is a normal fault and the protection has operated correctly. AFRA first analyzes analogue waveforms for evidence and timing of any fault and then classifies it, after which the millisecond-resolution sequence and timing are checked for the event signals, from protection through relays to circuit breaker switchings.< >

The authors discuss an implementation of an objectoriented (OO) fault simulator and its use within an adaptive fault diagnostic system. The simulator models the flow of faults around a power network, reporting switchgear indications and protection messages that would be expected in a real fault scenario. The simulator has been used to train an adaptive fault diagnostic system; results and implications are discussed.< >

A modelling technique that relates concurrent system behaviour to agent interaction at a high level of abstraction is outlined. This exploits two complementary programming paradigms: agent-oriented and definition-based. The method is illustrated with reference to modelling and simulation of activity at a railway station.< >

The software process is the total set of software engineering activities employed in the production, assessment and certification of an operational software. High integrity systems (HIS), such as air traffic control systems, are usually associated with a complex software development process. This is both due to the complex requirements of such systems and due to the demand for sophisticated techniques to increase the reliability (safety) of the final product. The progress that has been made in the area of software process modelling and the provision of automated support for process enactment through process-centered software engineering environments (PSEE) offer a prospective solution for an effective monitoring and control of HIS processes. The authors point out the features of HIS processes that need to be reflected in software process models and their support mechanisms, as well as the benefits that HIS can get from PSEEs and present these features. An object-oriented PSEE that has been developed in the research is briefly described and the advantages of PSEEs for HIS processes are discussed, illuminated by the results of the research.< >
